Composé entre 1830 et 1831, ce Nocturne en mi bémol majeur de Frédéric Chopin est le morceau favori de tous les jeunes pianistes. Son charme mélodique, sa simplicité strophique, sa brièveté et sa relative facilité d’exécution l’ont rendu célèbre à travers le monde. Chopin y adopte le ton de la confidence et développe le thème principal de manière fort expressive, sans renier ses influences directement issues de l’art du bel canto. Ce thème subira trois variations ornementales, entrecoupées de ritournelles de transition. La coda, très prenante, apporte le climax émotionnel de l’œuvre avant de glisser lentement vers un pianissimo à la fois doux et serein.

The Polonaises, Op. 40 belong to that later group. They comprise two works: a Polonaise in A major and a Polonaise in C minor. These two works comprise the second opus of piano polonaises to be published by Chopin, and they form a powrful contrastwith one another, representing two varietes of the heroic polonaise: the triumphant and the tragic. They also mark a further stage in the evolution of the polonaise: on the hand, in the direction of monumentalisation; on the other, towards a gradualweakening of its dance features, so that the dance in transformed into a kind of dance fantasy.

The Mazurka in A flat major was written between the Mazurkas, Opp. 17 and 24 (1833) and the Mazurkas, Op. 30 (1835). It differs from those sets, which in their dimensions, texture, harmony (including chromatism), elaborate ornamentation (e.g. in Op.17 No. 4), folk bourdons (Op. 17 No. 1), transferral of the melody to the left-hand part (Op. 24 No. 2) and differentation of compositional technique. The Mazurka in A flat major is not, however, a bridge between these opuses, but an occasionalwork - a gift for a lady written into her album. It has a simple design and uncomplicated texture.
