With a duration of about 10 minutes, Schubert's Magnificat D 486 in C major is one of the more concise settings of the well-known Marian canticles, originally for the service of Vespers. It was composed in late summer 1815, and is therefore probably one of a series of church music works Schubert wrote in his youth for Lichtenthal Parish Church. The work requires a large-scale orchestra with strings, woodwind, and brass. The four-part choir contrasts with four soloists; this quartet sings the peaceful middle section of the three-section work. For the Carus edition Schubert's own autograph manuscript of his Magnificat was consulted again for the first time since 1888. Until 1989 this had been thought to be lost. Preceding Johann Sebastian Bach, Charpentier is the most important master who turned to setting the Hymn to the Virgin Mary, the Magnificat. No less than ten works, in differing vocal and instrumental scoring and form comprise this genre. In the present Magnificat H 78 for five voices (in which alto and bass also have solo roles), two flutes, strings and basso continuo, each of the individual movements contains its own expressive profile in sound. The cantata O heilige Zeit [O Holy Time] of the former St. Thomas cantor Johann Kuhnau is the ideal baroque festive music for small scorings. Even though this is the larger of two cantatas with this text underlay, it can be performed by four soloists (SATB), single or double strings, and continuo organ. The participation of a choir in non-soloistic passages is optional, for historically unproven. The cantata was composed in the years 1704/05 and can therefore be placed in Kuhnau's term as St. Thomas cantor in Leipzig. A contemporary text by Erdmann Neumeister is fitted with a modern musical garb here while keeping unconditional adherence to it. Using a structural artifice as simple as it is effective, he provides a ritornello-like musical equivalent to the repeatedly recurring line of text O heilige Zeit!. This edition continues the series of works by Kuhnau started in the Pfefferkorn Musikverlag. Another festive music by Kuhnau with larger scoring is found in the Magnificat in C major, deemed a direct predecessor of Bach's Magnificat.
