Concert band - Grade 4 SKU: MH.1-59913-071-8 Composed by Timothy Broege. Suitable for high school, community, and college bands. Conductor Full Score. Duration 10:00. Published by Manhattan Beach Music (MH.1-59913-071-8). ISBN 9781599130712. Program Notes: Stylistically diverse -- tranquil, spirited pastoral, sensitive, energetic -- exhibiting a remarkable palette, the five movements of SINFONIA IX form a unique symphonic statement. Movement I, Prelude, is about contrasts: A lazy, smooth, motive in brasses alternates with, and then joins, an active and detached motive in woodwinds. The spirited Movement II, Morley's Ghost, is an intricate canonic collage and homage to that venerable theoretician & composer, Thomas Morley. By contrast, movement III, Dialog, speaks in a relaxed, lyrical, and pastoral language as it develops its gently rising and falling motives. Movement IV, Waltz, innocently celebrates the joys of childhood with a lilting melody and rondo form. For the rousing Finale, Movement V begins with a martial call of repeated-notes, heralding a headstrong journey of power and excitement. Like a number of the composer's other works, SINFONIA IX is based on earlier material: A brass sextet, written in 1966 when the composer was nineteen years old, forms the raw material for the first, third and fifth movements, while a later work, Martin's Waltz (a children's piece for flutes and clarinets composed in 1975) is the basis of the fourth movement. The second movement, however, is a fanciful contrapuntal commentary on Thomas Morley's 16th-century canzonet, Fire and Lightning. SINFONIA IX is dedicated to John Raforth, a distinguished band director and music educator at West High School in Madison, Wisconsin. The work was commissioned by his friends and former students, and was completed in 1977. Its first publication some twenty years later is a result of the increasing attention paid by university band directors to the earlier Sinfonias, particularly Sinfonia III (Hymns and Dances); Sinfonia V (Sinfonia Sacra et Profana); and now, Sinfonia IX. Whereas the first two works are wind ensemble compositions that have been championed equally by the concert band, Sinfonia IX is the composer's first college-level Sinfonia written especially for concert band. Ensemble instrumentation: 1 Piccolo, 8 Flute 1-2, 2 Oboe, 1 Eb Clarinet, 4 Bb Clarinet 1, 4 Bb Clarinet 2, 4 Bb Clarinet 3, 3 Bb Bass Clarinet, 2 Bassoon, 4 Eb Alto Saxophone, 2 Bb Tenor Saxophone, 1 Eb Baritone Saxophone, 3 Bb Trumpet 1, 3 Bb Trumpet 2, 3 Bb Trumpet 3, 2 F Horn 1-2, 2 F Horn 3-4, 3 Trombone 1, 3 Trombone 2, 3 Baritone B.C., 2 Baritone T.C., 4 Tuba, 3 String Bass, 2 Timpani, 5 Percussion. $25.00 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 4 to 6 weeks

Choral SATB choir, piano SKU: PR.312418710 A Brief Meditation On The Devil's Verse. Composed by Richard Wernick. -. Secular choral. Performance Score. With Standard notation. Composed 2011. 8 pages. Duration 4 minutes. Theodore Presser Company #312-41871. Published by Theodore Presser Company (PR.312418710). ISBN 9781598066265. UPC: 680160618743. Octavo inches. The Devil's Verse. To celebrate 25 years of excellence and promotion of new concert works, the New York Virtuoso Singers commissioned 25 contemporary composers for 25 new choral works, all of which now appear on their recording, 25 X 25: Twenty-Five Premieres for Twenty-Five Years. Among the 25 is Richard Wernick's The Devil's Game. Here, Wernick uses The Devil's Verse, a Latin palindrome that still puzzles us today as to its meaning, and appropriately embraces repetitive use of the verse in a musical palindrome of his own. The text is a palindrome (in girum imus nocte et consumimur igni), a rather mysterious one called The Devil’s Verse. Its origin is vague (probably Roman, but possibly Medieval) and it does not surrender its meaning easily; many scholars have fussed over it. It is a riddle as well as a palindrome, in other words a puzzle within a puzzle. My preferred translation, without going into the niceties of Latin grammar, is “We enter the circle at night and are consumed by fire.â€This music is also a palindrome, the outer parts of which are homophonic, while the turning around point in the center (where the basses enter for the first time) is a brief double canon. $2.50 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 1 to 2 weeks

Chamber Music Vibraphone, soprano Saxophone SKU: PR.11441378S Duo for Saxophones and Percussion. Composed by Shulamit Ran. Spiral. Contemporary. Full score. With Standard notation. Composed 2007. 12 pages. Theodore Presser Company #114-41378S. Published by Theodore Presser Company (PR.11441378S). UPC: 680160585939. 11 x 14 inches. Commissioned by Network for New Music, who premiered the work in April 2008, with support from Philadelphia Music Project, an Artistic Initiative of The Pew Charitable Trusts, administered by the University of the Arts. “Song and Dance†began its life as a nascent melody in the late eighties, employing a similar motivic cell as did three of my works written over a period of several years — East Wind, String Quartet No. 2 (Vistas), and Mirage. At the ore of these three works is the simplest of melodic kernels — a note encircled by its two neighboring tones (and more specifically, a half step above and whole step below). At the time, I envisioned writing a work for voice, oboe, and marimba, and had just begun it, only to drop it in favor of more pressing compositional assignments. Almost twenty years later, the vocal fragment finally evolved into the “song†of this work, played here by the soprano saxophone. But it seems that the song, all these years, had been waiting for its counterpart, a dance. Singing and dancing are two of humankind’s most basic and essential impulses, transcending time and place, reaching back to the earliest civilizations. The resulting composition, “Song and Danceâ€, moves back and forth between the two, delineating its various parts further with the use of both soprano and alto saxophones, partnered by mallet percussion instruments — mostly vibraphone and marimba, with bells added at the very end of the work. The song portions return to the same melody, varied and evolved over time, as new materials are introduced in the dance sections, affecting the presentation of the recurring song music. My thanks to the Network for New Music for commissioning this work and allowing me the freedom to choose its format and instrumentation.—Shulamit Ran. $23.99 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks

Chamber Music Tuba, Piano SKU: CF.W2693 The World's Oldest Tuba Solo(+)
Chamber Music Tuba, Piano SKU: CF.W2693 The World's Oldest Tuba Solo. Composed by William Pettee. Edited by Curtis Peacock. Sws. Set of Score and Parts. 8+2 pages. Carl Fischer Music #W2693. Published by Carl Fischer Music (CF.W2693). ISBN 9781491158586. UPC: 680160917198. 9 x 12 inches. While unknown today, composer William Pettee (1839a1891) was clearly a remarkable musician and composer evidenced by the fact that he wrote funeral music for Abraham Lincoln and General Ulysses S. Grant. This funeral music survives to this day in a piano reduction format and is the basis of some of my most current arranging projects. This new edition of Olosabut was the culmination of years of research into the era commonly called The Golden Age of Bands, a period spanning 1880a1920. This project initially began when I played the solo part for Olosabut with a reading band when I was a guest artist at the Northwest Brass Festival in Seattle in 2010. For this new edition, I created a score with modern transpositions. Prior to this, there has been no score for this music. There is often no score for American band music from this era. I also adjusted the dynamics and articulations to allow the soloist to be heard and composed a handful of new musical lines to correct the problems stemming from inconsistent number of measures in the original edition. Finally, I created a reduction for tuba and piano as well as a new edition for solo tuba and orchestra. Olosabut (atuba soloa spelled backwards) from 1885 is possibly the oldest American tuba solo to survive to the twenty-first century. I have done extensive research in this area, and while there may be some earlier pieces with small obbligato solos for tuba, and perhaps even earlier full-fledged tuba solos, I believe this is the earliest music with a serious solo tuba part throughout that survives to this day. In the Tuba Source Book, several early solos are listed from the 1880s. In my research, I have attempted to obtain all of the music listed in the Tuba Source Book from the 1880s or earlier though the Library of Congress and various historic libraries in America. Most of this music for solo tuba and band is incomplete or entirely unavailable today though. The earliest of these is Southwellas Quickstep (Fun for Basses) from 1881. This is described as a novelty march for tuba section, however. A notable omission from the Tuba Source Book, though, is William Petteeas Olosabut, which is clearly marked 1885 on the original published sheet music. This piece is not listed in the Tuba Source Book. However, a different piece by Pettee called Osceola is listed from 1889. Compiled and edited by Amy Porter, Treasures for Flute and Piano is acollection of Philippe Gaubert’s shorter works for flute and piano. Gaubertwas a multi-talented musician, a marvelous flutist as well as a composer, teacher, and master conductor. Over his lifetime, he became one of the mostimportant musical figures in France between the World Wars in the first halfof the 20th century. Trained in theory and harmony at the Paris Conservatory,Gaubert was also deeply influenced by other composers at the time, includingDebussy, Fauré, and Dukas. Editor Amy Porter is a distinguished Professorat The University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance, and hasbeen praised by critics for her exceptional musical talent and her passion forscholarship. This edition represents eleven of the sixteen works from AmyPorter and Dr. Penelope Fischer’s video study guide, “The Gaubert Cycle: TheComplete Works for Flute and Piano by Philippe Gaubertâ€. Philippe Gaubert (1879–1941) was a very important teacher and flutist in our classical flute playing lineage. In this edition we have gathered his beautiful, shorter compositions for flute and piano all in one place, to be cherished as “Gaubert’s Treasures.â€Philippe Gaubert personified the modern French school of flute playing as introduced by his teacher Paul Taffanel (1844–1908) at the Paris Conservatory. Gaubert was a multitalented musician, a marvelous flutist as well as a gifted composer, teacher and master conductor. Over his lifetime he became one of the most important musical figures in France between the World Wars in the first half of the twentieth century. Gaubert’s musical andpedagogical gifts to us are passed along through generations of students and continue to touch the hearts of many who listen to his fine, and refined, music.Philippe Gaubert studied composition at the Paris Conservatory with Raoul Pugno, Xavier Leroux, and then for a brief time with Charles Lenepvu. It was after this study that he won the famous Prix de Rome second prize in composition. Even with his schooling of theory and harmony in Paris, he was deeply influenced by other composers of the time, namely Debussy, Fauré and Dukas. Between the years of 1905–1914 Gaubert’s early workswere arrangements and short pieces written for the year-end final exam pieces at the Conservatory.Between 1914–1918 Gaubert served in the French Army during World War I, most notably in the battle of Verdun in 1916. This was considered one of the largest battles against the Germans in WWI. He was wounded but his creativity level was not dampened. He was rewarded for his service and awarded medals for his bravery. It was during this time that he found the energy to compose his Deux Esquisses or 2 Scenes, and sketched out his first flute sonata.Gaubert composed his remaining five flute and piano works after 1922 in Paris, and clearly his poetic soul was transformed from the earlier years. He took in new forms and styles of compositions such as a Suite, a Ballade and a Sonatine. He also completed his Second and Third Sonatas for Flute and Piano, all of them dramatic works in terms of compositional techniques and grandeur of tone.Gaubert composed music easily throughout his lifetime, especially during summer breaks when the orchestra and Paris Opera seasons were on hiatus and he was not conducting. He loved literature and poetry which inspired over thirty vocal works from 1903 through 1938.He also wrote twenty-six instrumental chamber works for other instruments: oboe, cornet, clarinet, trombone, violin, viola, cello, harp and combinations of these instruments with piano. Some of these were commissioned jury pieces, but many were for his musician friends.Six full-length stage works, both ballets and operas for the stage, several tone poems and symphonies were written throughout his lifetime. This edition represents eleven out of the sixteen works from our video study guide “The Gaubert Cycle: The Complete Works for Flute and Piano by Philippe Gaubert†with guest pianist Tim Carey. Omitted in this edition are Sonatas Nos. 1–3, Ballade, and Sonatine. $29.99 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 1 to 2 weeks
| Foundations of Conducting Technique GIA Publications

SKU: GI.G-9915 Composed by Frank Eychaner. Music Education. GIA Publications #9915. Published by GIA Publications (GI.G-9915). ISBN 9781622774371. In the world of music conducting there exist fundamental practices shared by all conductors regardless of the type of ensemble they conduct. Foundations of Conducting Technique is a comprehensive beginning conducting textââ¬âcomplete with pictures, online videos, and supplemental conducting etudesââ¬âto facilitate the development of a clear and expressive conducting technique. In this volume, author Frank Eychaner addresses three major areas for beginning conductors: gestural technique, score study, and leadership. For gestural technique, the text details a number of technical skills, including the appropriate use of the body, the roles of the right and left hand, basic conducting patterns and their derivatives, an application of Laban movement analysis, the importance of the conducting planes, and conducting with varied articulations (staccato, legato, and marcato), among others.àUsing direct language, Eychaner details clear cause and effect relationships between gesture and sound. In addressing score study, Eychaner states that all conducting gestures must beàguidedàby an accurate and artistic aural image of a musical work. Rather than advocating for one particular approach, this volume presents a number of possible score study methods for the student to explore. The author also includes a convenient and complete score study checklist. Finally, the text addresses how to be an effective and ethical leader from the podium. Eychaner presents the transformational leadership modelââ¬âa holistic and dynamic approach to leadershipââ¬âas a positive pathway for improving the conductorââ¬â¢s effectivenessàon and off the podium. Supplementing the text are music etudes to help students develop the technical skills of the conductor. The exercises are intentionally simple, consisting mostly of rhythmic materials and folk-like melodies, so that conductors can focus onàmastery of gestural skills. Foundations of Conducting Technique is a major contribution to conducting pedagogyàand an extraordinary resource that distills the essence of effective conducting gesture. An ideal text for undergraduate conducting courses, it is also a practical reference for anyone employed in the field, including music educators, church musicians, leaders of community ensembles, and professional conductors of all ensembles. Frank Eychaner, an international leader in conducting pedagogy, has been an educator and conductor for twenty-five years, working in public schools as well as with professional, collegiate, community, and church ensembles. He is currently Director of Choral and Vocal Studies at The University of Texas of the Permian Basin, where he teaches conducting, choral methods, and choral pedagogy, and conducts the Chamber Choir, Concert Choir, and Menââ¬â¢s and Womenââ¬â¢s Choirs. Incorporating complex rhythms, harmony and melodies, Mass of Pentecost is no exception to the composer's popular, distinctive style. Composed in 1949-1950, the Organ Mass is thought to be based on twenty years of improvising at Saint Trinity Church in Paris where Messiaen was organist. Mass of Pentecost is in five movements; 1) Entrance, 2) Offertory, 3) Consecration, 4) Communion, and 5) Recessional. Influences of birdsong are depicted within the piece, reflecting the composer's interest in ornithology. The first movement also contains the use of Greek rhythms. Mass of Pentecost is essential to all advanced organists seeking to expand and vary their repertoire.â€. $41.30 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 24 hours - In Stock

Piano (Piano Solo) SKU: HL.51481594 For Piano Solo Op. 2, No. 1. Composed by Alexander Scriabin. Edited by Valentina Rubcova. Henle Music Folios. Classical. Softcover. 4 pages. G. Henle #HN1594. Published by G. Henle (HL.51481594). UPC: 196288215837. 9.0x12.0x0.046 inches. One of Scriabin's best-known piano pieces is also one of his very first compositions. He wrote it when he was only fifteen years old; when it appeared in print in 1893, the twenty-one-year-old was still so unknown that he did not receive any remuneration from the publisher. The rapturous etude was soon to enjoy unprecedented success. Marked “Andante”, it is not a virtuoso piece – but nevertheless it is a challenge to master the full-handed chords in legato and to clearly work out the upper and middle parts at the same time. In the Henle Urtext edition, Boris Giltburg's fingerings support this task in an exemplary manner. As an etude of medium difficulty, this earworm offers a wonderful introduction to the piano world of Scriabin!
