Charles Aznavour, the son of Armenian immigrants, was born in 1924, in Paris. He finally launched his singing career in France with great effort; despite his lack of star looks and less than remarkable voice. However, he had two things going for him:powerful on-stage charisma and great willpower. It took him about twenty years to reach the top but when he did, his determination certainly paid off. He became a star singer/songwriter in France and his chansons were embraced throughout the rest ofthe world as well. The typical French atmosphere that pervades his music can be clearly experienced in this medley for concert band.

Er feierte sowohl als Liedautor, Interpret als auch als Filmschauspieler große Erfolge. Die typischfranzösische Atmosphäre, die Charles Aznavour in seine Musik packte, ist auch in dieser Bearbeitung für Blasorchester deutlich spürbar. Il s’est enfin lancé avec beaucoup d’effort dans sa carrière de chanteur en France, malgré son manque de physique de star et sa voix peu remarquable. Pourtant, il avait deux atouts importants : un charisme puissant sur scène et une forte détermination. Cela lui prit environ vingt ans pour atteindre le sommet, mais sa persévérance en valait la peine. Il devint un célèbre auteur-compositeur-interprète en France et ses chansons furent appréciées avec enthousiasme dans le monde entier. L’atmosphère typiquement française qui se répand dans sa musique peut aussi être ressentie dans ce medley pour orchestre d’harmonie.

I have never had much to do with the accordion in my career up until now, although this instrument is at home in many different forms across the world. It is a great phenomenon how air can be turned into sounds as diverse as beeping, murmuring, chirping or wheezing - all very human forms of articulation. The rib cage fills itself with sounds and expels the air with more sounds. From this thought, my title emerged: Der ewige Atem [Eternal Breath]. Breathing in and out is a synonym for our human existence from birth up until our last moments the eternal cycle of living and dying provided the ultimate inspiration for the addition of this extended epilogue to my Ode an die Nacht [Ode to the Night]. The operetta The Gipsy Baron is, together with Die Fledermaus (The Bat), the most famous theatre work by Johann Strauss Jr. A libretto full of romance, original musical ideas, compelling Viennese dances, fiery rhythmic Hungarian music and beautiful arias, were just some of the ingredients that lead to its huge success. The Gipsy Baron can also be thought of as a comic opera. The main motif of this overture won first prize in a contest that was to provide a new Hungarian anthem, however because Strauss did not have Hungarian nationality, another melody was chosen. A great transcription to bring a Hungarian twist to any programme.

Die Operette Der Zigeunerbaron ist eines der berühmtesten Bühnenwerke von Johann Strauss (Sohn). Ein Libretto voll von Romantik, originellen musikalischen Ideen, bezaubernden Wiener Tänzen, feuriger ungarischer Musik und wunderschönen Arien waren die Zutaten, die zum Erfolg führten. Die Ouvertüre ist keine abwechslungsreiche Sammlung der schönsten Motive aus der Operette. Sie ist ganz klar ein (erfolgreicher) Versuch, dem Publikum die Atmosphäre des Handlungsortes Ungarn nahe zu bringen. Dies gelingt auch Ihrem Blasorchester mit Wil van der Beeks Transkription.
