The music releases pieces of vivid sound one after another into the performance space. It is a baby's march - right foot, left foot, step by step. Innocent, audaciously powerful and immature, the toddler walks planting each step firmly on the ground. Based on a constant beat, the music is deformed with digital and pop expressions. Cute and pop contents and textures are produced and consumed on a massive scale every day. I find beauty in such artificial textures around us. Into this piece of music I put my love and prayers for children and future generations to come. Akiko Yamane.

Armed with a prodigious gift for forging musical identities, “Lord Carter Nicholas Pann†presents an offering inspired by the Elizabethan Era and an appreciation for the works of Percy Grainger. Pann’s suite tells a story of palace intrigue, outlined by the movement titles:1. Overture - Young Tom Abel, Heir to Cecil Abel’s Fortune2. Sarabande - Father Daniel Bennett from the Abbey at Lockwood Cross3. Pastorale - Joseph Dimplesweet, His Lordship’s Oldest Farmhand4. Gallop - Lord William H. Pettybone, Duke of Bremingham. At Her Ladyship’s Request (2016) was an idea born out of admiration for the wind works of Percy Grainger – most notably his Lincolnshire Posey. The names and places here are all fictitious. Four countrymen have come forward at Her Ladyship’s request as we commoners (and for as long as I can remember) have been led to believe Her Highness has grown complacent in her aged betrothal to His Lordship.I. It has long been established in this hill country that young, svelte Tom Abel has caught her fancy eye. He knocks about with the swagger of a visiting dignitary, confident and cocksure. And then there is his father’s fortune. Cecil Abel may be the richest man in the land save for His Lordship. Tom, his only son, will run his face straight into that pile the moment his old man kicks.II. It is rare to spy Father Daniel Bennett, High Priest from the Abbey at Lockwood Cross, loitering in our very own town square…but not as of late.III. Is Her Ladyship so desperate as to call upon Old Man Dimplesweet? Were you to confirm this, I would have straightened my back and spit the ground before you. Then I saw what could not possibly be misconstrued. And where is His Lordship anyway?IV. Pettybone! Conniving… insidious. I don’t believe there has been a greater rivalry among men for generations. The Duke’s ego alone could run our nation. The grudges he grows are notorious. His mount is legendary. The day has come to collect his toll.

Barcarolles for a Sinking City was inspired by the city of Venice, a place that has long held the fascination of artists, writers and composers, and which I have been lucky enough to visit on several occasions. Sadly it seems that future generations may not be so lucky: in addition to the city's slow sinking and recently discovered tilting, studies predict that if global warming and the resultant rise of ocean levels is unabated, the entire city (as well as many other coastal cities around the globe) will be under water by 2100. I. Funeral Gondola The late, cryptic piano works of Franz Liszt made a profound impression on me as a young composer, among them two works he entitled La Lugubre Gondola (usually translated as The Funeral Gondola ) which were said to be a premonition of Wagner's death in Venice, his coffin transported through the canals in a black gondola. These late pieces of Liszt acquired even greater significance to me after I spent two summers in Bayreuth under the patronage of Friedelind Wagner, the granddaughter of Wagner and great-granddaughter of Liszt. This movement is a meditation on Wagner, Liszt, Venice and its own evanescence. II. Barcarolle/Quodlibet The Quodlibet (Latin for what pleases) is a musical form dating back to the 15th century where many disparate melodies are juxtaposed. Popular in the Renaissance, sacred and secular melodies were combined, often to comical effect due to the resultant incongruity of the words. The form was considered the ultimate test of a composer's mastery of counterpoint. The most famous Quodlibet is without doubt the final Variation of Bach's Goldberg Variations. As a form the Quodlibet is less common in more recent music, although examples can be found in the works of Kurt Weill and David Del Tredici. My own Barcarolle/Quodlibet was inspired by the (perhaps apocryphal) story of the funeral where musicians were asked to play a Bach Choral, but due to miscommunication played instead the Bacarolle from The Tales of Hoffmann. Here, the Bach Choral Allen Menschen mussen sterben (All Men Must Die) is heard in the strings pizzicato, with a tempo indication In slow motion. The alto line of the Bach suggests a phrase from Beethoven's Ninth Symphony (Alle Menchen werden Bruder) heard in the muted trombone. Before long, the famous tune from Offenbach's opera is heard, followed by quotations from iconic Barcarolles by Chopin, Mendelssohn and Faure, as well as two Venetian popular songs and more Beethoven. III. Barcarola/Ostinato/Carillon An ostinato is a repeated musical figure, and carillon is Italian for music box. This movement references the obsolete genre of salon pieces that imitated music boxes: such works by composers like Liadov and Gretchaninov used to be a mainstay of pianists' encore repertoire. This movement is however much darker in conception than those pleasant trifles. Utilizing the full battery of percussion, the carefully notated temporal slowing of the ostinato becomes overwhelmed by a poignant chorale melody before this box is snapped shut. IV. Barcarolle Oubliee (Forgotten Barcarolle) Marked limpido (still) the final movement begins with the sound of rain produced by a percussion instrument called (appropriately) a rain stick. Halting phrases in the harp coalesce into the accompaniment for a plangent melody heard in the clarinet. The central Adagio of this movement leads to a shattering climax, before the opening phrases return and dissipate into nothingness.

This lively, dance-like 16th century tune has inspired both secular and sacred arrangements by generations of writers. Now, Michael Bryson has ingeniously paired it with two historic texts, one for Advent/Christmas (“Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesusâ€) and one for General/Eastertide (“I Will Sing of My Redeemerâ€). Optional Flute and Percussion add to this anthem, which features regular two against three rhythm passages and imaginative choral writing.

Sally Ann Morris and Adam Tice began working together in 2008, when Sally was asked to compose a few tunes for Adam’s first collection, Woven into Harmony. This initial collaboration was the beginning of what has become a dynamic partnership. In this symbiotic pairing new inspiration emerged, generating contemporary but timeless music where text and tune seamlessly unite.     The a cappella choral writing on “Will You Hold Me in the Light†and “This Is My Body†is so lush and intricate that accompaniment is not necessary, while the poetry of “God Give Me Faith like a Child†and “Breath of God, Breath of Peace†illustrates the innocence and fearlessness essential in our love and trust of God. Stylistically ranging from a cappella choral to Latin jazz, each piece offers a musical and textual sophistication that powerfully conveys themes of journey and longing for God’s guidance.

The text is a vast collage of Sami poetry - the Sami people being the only indigenous people in the Europe. The strong mutual bond between the generations and the Sami culture's cyclical perception of time are present also in the structure of the work: the music unfolds in layers and cycles, to be born again and again. The work was commissioned by three northernmost professional orchestras in Europe: Lapland Chamber Orchestra (FIN), Norrbotten Chamber Orchestra (SWE) and Arctic Philharmonic (NOR). Dedicated to John Storgards and Ulla-Maija Kanerva. First performance: Lapland Chamber Orchestra 1.9.2016, cond. John Storgards, Virpi Raisanen, mezzosoprano. Disney films remain ever-popular, chiefly because of their soundtracks. Many songs continue to enjoy fame and popularity decades after the film premieres. The songs in this volume - Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious from Mary Poppins dating from1964, Under the Sea from The Little Mermaid dating from 1989 and I See the Light from Tangled dating from 2010 - received many awards including Oscars and Grammys. Because the tunes are so catchy, they are timeless, appeal to many generations, and have a life of their own beyond the film. High spirited songs like sympathetic nanny Mary Poppins' nonsense song can be sung anywhere! Rainer Butz has expertly arranged the songs for equal-voice youth choir with piano accompaniment. The new series chorissimo! MOVIE contains up-to-date choral arrangements of well-known film music suitable for school and youth choirs.
