Marchissimo will make a fantastic opening piece for any concert. It does however come with a twist! It can be played simply as written, but is really designed to be ‘staged’ with players coming on the concert platform one by one as they begin to play. The piece actually consists of three marches in one, each of which highlights a section of the band. The piece culminates in a final climax where all three march themes are played simultaneously.

Marchissimo is een fantastisch openingsstuk voor elk concert, maar er zit wel een bijzondere wending aan! Het kan gewoon worden gespeeld zoals genoteerd, maar het is eigenlijk zo gecomponeerd dat muzikanten een voor een het podiumop kunnen komen voor ze beginnen te spelen. Het gaat hier in feite om drie marsen in één, waarbij steeds een deel van het orkest aan bod komt. Het stuk leidt naar een climax waarin alledrie de thema’s tegelijkertijd worden gespeld.

Marchissimo wurde als Eröffnung eines Konzerts geschrieben, da es einem Spieler nach dem Anderen Gelegenheit gibt, auf die Bühne zu treten. Im ersten Satz treten erst die Schlaginstrumente, zusammen mit Pikkoloflöte, Bassklarinette, Euphonium und Tuba auf. Im zweiten Satz kommen Posaune, Flöte, Klarinette und schließlich Saxophon hinzu. Im dritten Satz komplettieren die Hörner das Blasorchester, welches im fulminanten Schluss die Themen aller drei Sätze noch einmal aufnimmt. Mit Marchissimo ist ein wirkungsvoller Auftritt garantiert!

Marchissimo est un condensé de trois marches qui offre deux possibilités d’interprétation. Elle peut être jouée telle qu’elle est écrite, ou se développer selon un jeu scénique bien structuré où les musiciens entrent en scène au moment de leur première intervention dans la pièce. Chaque groupe expose alors un des trois thèmes principaux. Lorsque la formation est au complet, un court passage constitué de fragments des trois lignes mélodiques surgit travers l’ensemble de la formation avant d’aborder le tutti final, ultime retour des trois thèmes exposés simultanément.

My Eighth and Ninth String Quartets, begun in late 2017, are sonic cousins. Akin to real cousins, each piece exhibits differing natures. They were requested by two ensembles that have become asecond familiesa to me: The Jupiter Quartet of Urbana, Illinois and the Amernet Quartet based in Miami, Florida. Their collective dedication to, and care for, our art remains a personal and constant are-fuelinga for me. The quartets were commissioned by, and dedicated to, Margaret and Philip Verleger of Denver, Colorado. Additional financial support was provided by the School of Music at Stetson University, Timothy Peter, Dean. Quartet No.8 is laid out in a classical four-movement design. The work does break somewhat from conventional tradition by often placing quartet members into soloistic roles as the movement titles note. individual The opening piece presents at the outset a three-note motto which is turned over, tumbled, and energetically discussed, primarily by a violin duet. It is a duel. The two players part company only infrequently during the movement's progress, pausing briefly for other commentary by their alower cohortsa, the Viola and Cello do not argue, but abet their friends' aeffortsa. The piece's overall character is fairly bright and dancelike, closing in an unresolvedastandoffa. not Two principal asound-objectsa stitch the second movement scherzo together: sliding hands (glissandos) and a plucked ashufflea (pizzicato) - both instigated by the (solo) cellist. The others are influenced - or are not - by their aleadera, and follow - or interrupt - the cello throughout their four-voiced conversation. The third movement (longest of the set) is an elegy dedicated to the memory of a close personal friend, the American composer David Maslanka (1943 - 2017). Its' genesis is a simple 5-note melody derived from my own name (SaC/DaC/EaC/H). This line commences in the (solo) viola and is obsessively uttered without relief during the movement's lamentations. The closing movement revisits much of that opening three-note material, but now dressed up for the full quartet to view. It is a slowly accelerating romp which - twice - cannot avoid a nod to the Amernet and Jupiter performers by offering a humble bow to the 4th movement of Gustav Holst's PLANETS - Jupiter: The Bringer of Jollity. My quartet serves as an honouring salute of thanks for the talent, respect, and friendship of these two young quartets. STRING QUARTET No. 8 is roughly 22 minutes in duration. It was written as an homage to Franz Joseph Haydn, my adesert-island-composera, and completed in Holly Hill, Florida in early April of 2019. S.H.

This series of easy piano music for teaching purposes presents pupils in the lower and lower middle grades with a carefully chosen selection of well-known and lesser-known compositions by important masters. The volumes are deliberately kept small in extant, since it is more stimulating for children to change the teaching material frequently. Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683-1764) is the second great keyboard master of the Baroque Age next to Couperin. His works are as unknown to pianists, with few exceptions, as they are famous among harpsichord players. The virtuosity and imaginativeness of his works lend themselves especially well to the sound of harpsichord, which is why the piano interpretation of works by Couperin, Rameau, Scarlatti and other composers of that time has been categorically rejected. But, after all, the works of Bach and Handel were written for the harpsichord and clavichord, and no one would dare question their interpretation on the pianoforte. In order to introduce these Impressionists of the Baroque Era to piano instructions, the editor has added to this series a folio of both Couperin's (EB 8029) and Rameau's music. The selection of the pieces is based on two criteria: 1. relatively modest demands made on technique, 2. various musical forms of expression. Baroque dance forms and graceful character pieces (LaJoyeuse, L'Indifferente) are typical ofRameau's work. Simplifications to a small extent of the harpsichord setting and also of the omamentation in the original version were required, based on the teaching experience of the editor. The indications for phrasing and articulation are those of the editor. The Minuet on page 6 has been precisely elaborated on in this respect to serve as a model, whereas the remaining pieces contain only suggestions. As in other folios of this series: what is here to be stressed, is the importance of working out independently the phrasing and the dynamics. Directions for this are given by the espective footnotes; these directions, however, are not obligatory. Indications pertaining to dynamics and tempo have been omitted completely; the clearly recognizable character of the individual pieces should be direction enough. The tonal possibilities of the piano should in any case by used subtly. This piece is dedicated to all the citizens who live, have lived, and will live in the US town of Algona, who commissioned the work to celebrate it’s 150th anniversary. With dark-tinted tones (low drums, heavy brass), this overture begins with a primitive sacred feel, it seems as if centuries-old Indian singing is heard once more. Gradually the sound becomes clearer and brighter as the same theme travels throughout the band in various guises and variants. Imposing tutti passages then give the band the chance to lavishly shine. This bright and catchy overture radiates spontaneous energy and as it features every section of the band all the players as well as the listenersare continually surprised and captivated.

Met donkere tonen begint deze ouverture sacraal en bezwerend: het lijkt of eeuwenoude indianengezangen weer tot klinken komen. Geleidelijk wordt het klankbeeld helderder: hetzelfde thema maakt in diverse varianten als het ware eenronde door het orkest. Met een paar imposante tuttipassages kan het orkest goed uitpakken. Nadien komt een energiek allegro met een krachtige thematiek naar voren, gevolgd door een lyrisch gegeven. Deze ingrediënten wisselen elkaaraf op weg naar een opwindende finale. Het klankidioom is zeer toegankelijk en alle geledingen van het orkest komen aan bod!
