Anton Bruckner composed his first mass, the Mass in D minor, in 1864 in just four months. It was not ready in time for the Kaiser Franz Joseph I's birthday, as planned, but was first performed on 20 November at the Feast of St Cecilia in Linz Cathedral - with great success. The mass is one of the first works by Bruckner to be written in his characteristic symphonic style. It was revised several times and first published in 1892. This edition is based on a critical evaluation of all the relevant sources, and offers an improved musical text. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.2709200.

According to the composer, this carol was noted by Miss Lucy Brodwood near Sussex from the singing of Christmas Mummers called Tipteers or Tipteerers during their play of Saint George, the Turk, and the Seven Champions of Christendom. Grainger's setting of the caroll is here arranged for band by master orchestrator, Carl Simpson.

The cantata Sei Lob und Ehr dem hochsten Gut (All glory to the Lord of Lords) BWV 117 is one of a small group of Bach's chorale cantatas which use exclusively the text of the chorale, including in the three recitatives and three arias. Only the autograph score of the cantata survives; although this enables an approximate dating to be made (c. 1730), it does not give the occasion for which the cantata was written. The choice of chorale may indicate it was composed for a wedding. Recently it has been suggested that the occasion for its composition was the birthday of the Duke of Weissenfels in 1731; but there is no firm evidence to support either theory. The cantata opens with an extended movement for chorus in which Bach contrasts the concertante orchestra with festive, almost homophonic choral writing. This chorus movement is repeated at the end. A simple chorale movement which comes fourth indicates that the nine-movement cantata was performed in two sections. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.3111700.

The composition of this parody was begun in 1718 and completed with the final version in 1731. The original work (the basis of the parody) was Der Himmel lacht auf Anhalts Ruhm und Gluck, which was a cantata for the birthday of Count Leopold von Anhalt-Kothen (1718, BWV 66a), with a text by Christian Friedrich Hunold, alias Menantes. In 1856, the year in which Mozart's one-hundredth birthday was elaborately celebrated, Franz Lachner composed the Requiem in F minor op. 146. It became his most well-known and most important work. Lachner's intensive study of Mozart's music on the occasion of the commemorative year lends credence to that fact that it was not inspired by a personal loss, such as a death in the family or among his friends. Although closer examination proves that his music differed essentially from Mozart's, Lachner's work shows a clear expression of his admiration for him. The parallels between the two Requiems range from the characteristics of the organization of the text and the formal structure, to the similar treatment of individual sections, themes and motives. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.2730100.

Richard Strauss was aware (especially following the success of his Don Juan) of his reputation and above all of his value as a composer, which led him to rewrite several of his successful works by hand and leave them to his descendants as valuable Christmas gifts. In the case of the Eulenspiegel score, however, it was a genuine revision, which he marked with the instruction: [...] with the second fair copy October 1944 | once again revised and | to be regarded as a new print (especially in the complete edition of my works). | Dr. Richard Strauss. Hundreds of more precisely defined indications for articulation, dynamics and tempo, but especially an altered scoring at the end of the work (waiver of additional horns and trumpets) present the Till Eulenspiegel in this Urtext edition for the first time in the version bequeathed by Strauss as the final version. The dedicatee of the work changed as well. Whereas the first edition was dedicated to the dear friend Dr. Arthur Seidl, Strauss dedicated his revision to the good Till on his 50th birthday.

Scored for horn and chamber orchestra, Campana in Aria was composed in 1998 to mark the 40th birthday of Esa-Pekka Salonen. Salonen conducted the first performance; his musical career began as a horn player, and Lindberg's piece is derived from an early work by Salonen for that instrument. The solo part is complemented by two horns from the orchestra, positioned antiphonally.
