Frederick Grinke (the dedicatee) and the pianist Michael Mullinar premiered this sonata in 1954. The opening Fantasia contrasts a rhythmic piano figure with a slow flowing theme on the violin, while the second movement is a march-like Scherzo.

Originally intended as the first piece in a cycle of four impressions entitled In the New Forest, Burley Heath was written in 1902 but never finished. The manuscript represents a 168-bar fragment, which James Francis Brown, the editor of this edition, has completed by inserting a recapitulation of the initial material.

Purcell's Trio Sonatas of 1683 are a blend or hybrid of French and Italian Baroque 17th Century musical styles. The six Sonatas of Volume 2 alternate between major and minor keys. Each work consists of several short movements, ranging between melancholy and joyous. Volume 2 is a continuation of the six sonatas from volume one, with more surprises and enjoyment for performers and listeners alike.Especially delightful are the dissonances that the composer intersperses throughout each work. Each Sonata is about 6-7 minutes in length and they are an absolute delight to perform. For advanced performers.

Sibelius wrote the five-minute Romance in 1903 for string orchestra, originally titling it Andante. However he was persuaded to change the name about five years later by a critic's review. In 1903, Sibelius was still composing in a Romantic style, not the austere sounds heard later-on after he composed the 4th Symphony. Romance is made up of three sections; a slow Andante, a faster middle section and a slow third section. Mr. Sauer has distilled the music down to a lovely solo for Tuba or Bass Trombone and Piano. This crowd-pleaser will work well for advanced performers.
