Improvised Music - Essays And Interviews by Jakob Thorkild Overgaard.
From the preface:
This book is the child of my extensive personal experienceas performerof musical improvisation. I havea large number of concerts, recordings and bands inmy baggage, and throughout my career as performerI have reflected much on the music as such, its origins, and its effects onperformer and listener alike. In addition to this, my M.A. in Music from CopenhagenUniversity provided me with a theoretical foundationwhich has sharpened my reflections on musicand fostered an interestinthe spoken word.As its point of departure, this book will attempt a discussionof improvised music after 1968, as a conceptand as an actual performing art. I shall use the terms‘freeimprovisation’ or ’ freely improvised music’ – as Ithink that they are the best, although I am of coursefully aware that there may be several other adequateterms for this music...
...There are sections solely based on my views and analyses as well as sections taking their starting point in the views of other writers and artists.
Besides, the book containsinterviews and communications with prominent performers of improvised music and theorists such as, inter alia, Danish Peter Ole Jørgensen, Swedish Raymond Strid, Danish Vagn E. Olsson and Torben Sangild, Postdoc at theDepartment of Arts and Cultural Studies, Copenhagen University.

This composition is a Chilean 'Cueca,' which is a dance found in many South American countries that is de rived from the Spanish 'Jota' and contains several elements from the 'Fandango.' There are many different styles of 'Cuecas', depending on the nature of the texts or the region from which they come. However the rhythm is mostly written in 6/8, alternating sometimes with 3/4, and in minor keys, and it is danced in single and independent couples. Because of its melancholic character, this 'Cueca' is thought to have derived from the Peruvian 'Yaraví' and it comes from the province of Sucre and was composed in the times of the Chaco war (that occured between Bolivia and Paraguay in 1932-1935). Most of the authors who composed texts and popular tunes in this period are anonymous. The instruments that accompany the 'Cueca' are generally guitar, bombo and charango.

Adam Granger self-published the first edition of Grangerâ??s Fiddle Tunes for Guitar in 1979. A second edition was published in 1994. Now Mel Bay Publications presents the third edition of the book.
This 236-page book is the most extensive and best-documented collection of fiddle tunes for the flatpicking guitar player in existence, and includes reels, hoedowns, hornpipes, rags, breakdowns, jigs and slip-jigs, presented in Southern, Northern, Irish, Canadian, Texas and Old-time styles.
There are 508 fiddle tunes referenced under 2500 titles and alternate titles. The titles are fully indexed, making the book doubly valuable as a reference book and a source book.
In this new edition, all tunes are typeset, instead of being handwritten as they were in the previous editions, making the tabs easier to read.
The tunes in Grangerâ??s Fiddle Tunes for Guitar are presented in Easytab, a streamlined tablature notation system designed by Adam specifically for fiddle tunes.
The book comes with a link which gives access to mp3 recordings by Adam of all 508 tunes, each played once at a moderate tempo, with rhythm on one channel and lead on the other.
Also included in Grangerâ??s Fiddle Tunes for Guitar are instructions for reading Easytab, descriptions of tune types presented in the book, and primers on traditional flatpicking and rhythm guitar. Additionally, there are sections on timing, ornamentation, technique, and fingering, as well as information on tune sources and a history of the collection.
Mel Bay also offers The Granger Collection, by Bill Nicholson, the same 508 tunes in standard music notation.

This clarinet quartet has been done in three completely different movements. That is to say, they are three different ideas. Hence its name Trideas. I think that it suits medium-level students. Jose M. Encinoso.

The Belgian composer Nicholas Lens presents extremely varied etudes, exercises and simple phrases with wonderfully telling titles from poetry and everyday world for children and adults. For the most part the studies are tonal and simple and have no constructed line. They are not based on any educational concept but leave the musical dramatization to the pupils and teachers: 'Notes and rhythms are just notes and rhythms, they do not have that many rules, they do not have any pretension, they are just tools for you to use to express what you want to share'.
