Homeward is a lyrical ballad in ABA form. The composition presents few rhythmic challenges, allowing the ensemble to concentrate on beauty of sound, balance, dynamic nuance, phrasing, and expressive performance. The woodwind voices present the melody at the opening accompanied by a flute countermelody. Care should be taken to balance the two parts. The four-measure phrases call for tapered dynamics and freedom of the metric pulse at cadence points. A change of tempo and key, with a lean toward the minor mode, mark the contrasting B section (m. 9). Heed the dynamic markings that swell to a climax (m. 16) and then subside within this section. Take liberty to hold back the tempo at the percussion link to the forte restatement of A (m. 27) and the arrival of the fortissimo climax (m. 33). The coda (m. 35) should be presented slowly and serenely as the composition comes to a quiet close.

A Klezmer Wedding is a set of four dances, newly-composed but based on traditional models. The Doina is an expressive chant for three successive soloists; it twists and turns with the wailing lament of a shepherd's pipe. Next follows the Hora, a slow Rumanian dance in three with a mood that reflects the wedding's solemn vows. A Chusidl, with a moderate speed and bouncy rhythms, gets the party to the dance floor. The concluding Freylach (happy, but still in a minor key!) takes the bride, groom, and guests to the edge of frenzy.Titles: Doina * Hora * Chusidl * Freylach.

Prokofiev composed his first piano concerto while at the Conservatory, in 1911 and 1912, and premiered it himself on August 7, 1912. The concerto is a single movement divided into clearly marked sections. Prokofiev could in this way keep the typical fast-slow-fast structure of the usual three-movement concerto, yet use some of the same thematic elements throughout all of his sections. Throughout the work, Prokofiev demonstrates his penchant for bright, percussive textures. The glockenspiel takes on a uniquely soloistic role, often teaming up with the piano to sparkle above the orchestral fray. With its bravura solos and daring harmonies, Prokofiev's first 'mature' composition announces him as a musical force to be reckoned with.

My first piano sonata was started when I was in college, but was recently revised. The main key is B-flat Major, with the first theme of the first movement being a fanfare. The second theme is more lyrical in nature, in D-flat Major. After an exposition repeat, the development deals mostly with the fanfare material. The recapitulation is by-the-book, with a sudden, surprising coda. The slow movement, placed second, has the character of a chaconne, using two different major scales in the treble and bass clefs. The tempo quickens to a dance, and an explosive climax. From out of the ashes comes the beginning of the piece, modified from it's original state. The scherzo played rather fast, mostly in octaves. There is a short trio which was influenced by Prokofiev's Fifth symphony. After the dacapo, the movement disappears into thin air. The last movement is a Rondo. The material for the A section is taken from the opening measures of the piece. The B and C sections are developments of the other themes of the first movement. The sonata ends with much finality.

From a standstill, this piece takes off and never lets up. Well . . .maybe just for a brief moment in the pit stop (slow section). But then it's a wild ride to the end. Lots of fun for everyone!

The Fifth Hungarian Rhapsody, published in 1853, emerged from several earlier versions. The double character indicated in the sobriquet âHéroïde élégiaqueâ is based on the two contrary themes: a âheroicâ theme in minor and an âelegiacâ theme in major, seasoned with characteristics of Liszt's âstyle hongroisâ such as augmented seconds and sharp dotted rhythms. Thanks to the slow tempo, No. 5 is one of Liszt's less difficult rhapsodies and thus offers a wonderful introduction to these musical reminiscences of his Hungarian homeland. Involved in this Henle Urtext edition, which also takes the autograph into account for the first time, were two eminent Liszt specialists: Mária Eckhardt provided the preface, Vincenzo Maltempo the fingerings.

Once the solos are over, the full ensemble comes roaring in to take the chart to a strong, sensational ending. Your audiences will love this tune! 5-5-5-3.

Christmas and Chanukah faiths collide in this hilarious yet musically satisfying option for your winter program! Four popular Christmas melodies are set in four distinct and characteristic klezmer styles. Opening with Jingle Bells over a slow and dramatic Doina, the music moves into a lively version of We Wish You a Merry Christmas as a Bulgar. A Khosidl is the setting for a slower, restrained version of Hark! The Herald Angels Sing (complete with shout chorus!). Then the music takes off with Deck the Halls presented as a Sher. Of course, the Dreidel Song makes a cameo appearance at the end. Tons of fun and wildly entertaining!

Commissioned by the New York University Jazz Ensemble, this medium uptempo foray with abstract overtones features solos by tenor and piano. The opening unison brass soli, joined by saxophone counterpoint, leads to an energetic exchange between the sections, followed by the tenor sax solo over contemporary harmonies. After exciting exchanges between soloist and ensemble, the band takes over with an intense interlude leading to a piano solo over more traditional changes. The final shout chorus brings the band to its peak, leading to a final vamp that slowly builds to a powerful finish. Rhythm section parts are partially notated with chords cued. Duration 9:15.

Heather Sorenson is a student of the traditional spiritual, and her skill shines brightly in this exciting new anthem. Starting with a slow, soulful solo accompanied by the choir, this dazzling selection quickly moves into an up-tempo groove that will keep feet tapping until the very end. Deftly featuring a wide variety of vocal textures, this contemporary spiritual will take some work, but the results will be worth it!

Lahara - which literally means 'wave' - is a term used in Indian music to describe a repeating melodic phrase that accompanies table and pakhawaj solo. In such a traditional context the lahara would be played by a melodic instrument such as the sarangi, functioning as a background against which the flourishing virtuosity of the soloist could evolve. In my piece this function is also present in the form of a long line stated three times fully in the Thai gongs, however there is no virtuosic soloist. Instead, the musical evolution (if it is that) takes the form of a resonant ceremony enacted on bell plates and steel pans, situated not only on-stage but in four locations around the audience. If you want to look for it, the idea of waves can also be seen in other aspects of the piece: the slow wave of the gradual progression of players from the back of the hall to the front, which defines the form of the piece; the waves of tam-tam crescendi at the end of each statement of the lahara; maybe even in the way that the foreground melodic figurations progressively increase in density over the course of the piece until they completely dominate our perception, before suddenly disappearing… And on a more concrete note every sound is, after all, a wave. A slower and more poignant movement, Respectfully Yours takes the form of a letter from those who have long been disenfranchised and excluded - they could be one of a number of groups! - and who, though now welcomed into the fold, cannot take acceptance for granted. The memory of rejection is raw and recent. With polite reserve underwritten by passion, they respectfully reaffirm their claim to be 'of the same flame'.
