This text is taken from the Dies Irae Sequence from the Requiem Mass. It is a contemplation of the arrival of judgment day. The A-sections, mm. 1-29 & mm. 43-end, are a manic depiction of the fierce wrath of judgment day. They should be sung with fire, crisp consonants while always enunciating the accents in order to realize the full effect of this powerful text. The entire demeanor of the tone and facial expressions should change for the B-section, mm. 30-42 as it is a plea for mercy. The audience should realize the change in this contrasting section. Translation Dies irae, dies illa: Day of wrath, that day Solvet saeclum in favilla: shall dissolve the world into embers Teste David cum Sibylla: As David prophesied with the Sibyl. Voca me cum benedictis :Call me to be with the blessed. Salva me fons pietatis : Save me, fount of pity. The Sibyl is a reference from a Greek word, which means Prophetess. In this context, the word appears in plural, referring to many prophetesses. David, or King David, has long been considered prophetic among biblical scholars. About the Arranger D. After a year with limited music making, there could be nothing better. Imagine throwing open the shutters to sing with your neighbors as this beautiful piece unfolds. It's consistently lyrical and legato, with peaks and valleys built into the dynamics to heighten emotions and capture joy. We love this expressive piano part, especially the delicate music box-inspired introduction. Don't miss the dramatic modulation before the pinnacle refrain crescendos to a big finish.

This thrilling concert/contest work boasts an array of musical moods and artful contrasts. A striking minor theme opens the piece, enhanced by percussive handclaps and punctuated by emphatic cadences from the piano. In the middle, a lyrical major-key melody surfaces along with beautifully sustained legato choral phrases. A joyful recapitulation ends this tour de force even stronger than it began.

Upper voices introduce a jubilant refrain, then the entire choir sings it in harmony. A contrasting section offers a gorgeous new motive, followed by a rich harmonization of the new material. The return to the original chorus is heightened by a soaring descant, which builds momentum into an exciting finish.

Elegant. Expressive. Evocative. The poetry elicits icy images of winter; the music sends shivers up the spine. Listen closely for the voice of winter, sung by a soloist or small group, to appear halfway through the piece. Your audience will sit silently in awe before applauding.
