Haydn's Missa Sancti Joannis Nepomuceni, dated 21 May 1772, is dedicated to the Bohemian martyr and patron Saint of bridges, Johannes Nepomuk (ca. 1340-1393, canonized in 1729). Despite the addition of woodwinds and brass to the three-part string section, the Mass is in a comparatively simple, compact form as was expressly required by Count Hieronymus Colloredo, Haydn's second employer in Salzburg. Even in the final sections of the Gloria and Credo Haydn forgoes not only vocal virtuosity, but also the polyphonic artifices which traditionally characterize these passages in the Mass. Like the Missa Sancti Amandi (1776), the Nepomuk Mass does not employ vocal soloists. Score available separately - see item CA.5031400.

Giles evokes a serene musical aura as he casts the opening statement of Ubi Caritas as an alto and tenor duet in an organum-like setting. The text, taken from the Mandatum, the rite of the washing of the feet traditionally observed on Maundy Thursday, is sensitively expressed by the rhythm of the music. Also, Giles' employment of extended vocal ranges and dynamics helps to express the vastness of the love described in this text. Though particularly appropriate for Maundy Thursday, it will also serve well as a general anthem for Holy Communion.

This simple,four-part setting of the introit 'Rorate Caeli' captures both the hope and the intimacy traditionally associated with Advent. With its haunting, cascading phrases, it is a valuable addition to the Advent repertoire. The text is the introit for the fourth Sunday of Advent and can be sung liturgically. This short composition would also make a beautiful contribution to an Advent or a Christmas concert, its warm harmonies leading the listener from the darkness of Advent to the spirit of Christmas.

This mass setting was commissioned by the Friends of Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford and first performed on Ascension Sunday, 1994. Suitable for both church and concert use, the music is both lyrical and dramatic. The ââ¬ÅSanctusââ¬Â begins quietly, with divided sopranos trading off on a major second in a mysterious and meditative way. Parts add and build until the basses enter with a cantus firmus of sorts. The major second continues to figure prominently in the ensuing material. The movement ends with a simple melody repeated in unison (ââ¬ÅHosanna in excelsisââ¬Â) fading away into the distance. Duration 3:55.

This fine piece couples the stately tune SINE NOMINE with a new text. This text, commissioned for the sesquicentennial year of the Archdiocese of Chicago, speaks eloquently of the nature of the church and its mission. The setting was first used for the Archdiocese's Liturgy by the Lake celebrated in Chicago's Grant Park in August of 1994. This setting is suitable for festive celebrations: Chrism Masses, ordinations or commisionings, parish anniversaries, church or altar dedications, diocesan celebrations, etc. Since the tune is traditionally coupled with William Walsham How's For All the Saints, six verses of that hymn have been provided throughout the score as an alternate text.

Practical performing Urtext edition based on the latest state of Bach research. Every era hears and interprets Bach anew, and every era also evaluates the sources afresh and with new eyes. 40 years after the publication of the St. Matthew Passion in the New Bach Edition, Klaus Hofmann, Director of the Johann Sebastian Bach Institute Gottingen for many years and a contributing editor to the New Bach Edition, presents a new edition. Hofmann has placed the study of the sources at the service of musical practice and the detailed investigation of Bach's intentions. Bach scholars are well aware that Bach's original score and performance parts, running to almost 500 pages of music, are full of ambiguities and contradictions, particularly regarding articulation, which constantly challenge performers to new interpretations. Hofmann discusses these and other problems in a concise critical report, frequently arriving at new conclusions in the process. Extensive notes about parallel passages offer valuable help for interpretation. Special attention was devoted to the performance material with regard to practical needs. Thus, for example the text incipits are also printed in the instrumental parts (including tacet passages). In short - an Urtext edition for practical performance based on the latest findings in Bach research. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.3124400.
