About Oxford New Horizons
New Horizons showcases the wealth of exciting, innovative, and occasionally challenging choral music being written today. It encompasses the whole gamut of small-scale choral genres, both secular and sacred, and includes pieces for upper-voice and mixed choirs. With titles by some of the most accomplished choral composers active in Great Britain and abroad, the series introduces new repertoire and fresh talent to a broad spectrum of choirs. New Horizons features composers with growing reputations for quality composition reflecting a strong individual voice. The series is continually expanding and should be the first place to look for attractive and performable contemporary choral music.

Johann Hermann Schein's Israelsbrunnlein, published in Leipzig in 1623, is a supreme achievement not only among the works of this composer, who had been Thomaskantor in Leipzig since 1616, but also for the entire body of German music written during the first half of the 17th century. Among the 26 motets written in the Italian madrigal manner 23 are settings of Old Testament texts, a fact to which the collection owes its title. The source for the text of this collection is the inexhaustible fountain of the Psalms, the books of Moses, the Prophets, the Songs of Solomon, and other books of the Old Testament.

The Five Lesser Joys of Mary begins with a conventional Nativity scene - the ox and the ass for warmth, the star, the Wise Men - to verses attributed by Warlock to one Daniel Lawrence Kelleher, editor of Christmas Carols (No. 18 in the second series of Augustan Books of English Poetry) where the anonymous verses were published.
The fourth stanza recounts Jesus 'Confounding the doctors, the poor little Child,' while the fifth carries us to Calvary and a singularly lame conclusion as Mary 'Saw Jesus droop over and lie very still, She thought of the good times they had long ago When He'd droop in her arms and she'd singhusheenlo.'
Strophically composed, with small variations, Warlock's tenderness seems generic.
