Ancient Desert Drone was composed for orchestra in 1940 at the request of Percy Grainger, who encouraged the idea of using a single pitch “drone” throughout the work (similar to Grainger's own The Immovable Do) and to whom the piece is dedicated. While the work suggests an Eastern charm with its distinctive mode and primitive rhythms, Cowell himself stated there was no particular programmatic intent. Henderson is a city in Clark County, Nevada, just southeast of Las Vegas and surrounded by desert: this was the inspiration for the title. Desert Dances opens with a lively introduction, mostly in 3/4, which pervades the faster sections of the piece. This subsides to introduce a slower dance which expands to a full-band climax. The introduction soon returns and leads to the main theme of the piece, a waltz-like melody played by the full ensemble. A short bridge passage follows, which leads to a legato central theme. This is played twice and heralds the return of the main theme and a short coda which closes the work. An imaginative work for concert or contest with nice features throughout all groups of the band.

A Man’s Destiny has the Frisian line ‘Yn Ieren en Sinen’ (‘with much conviction’) as its subtitle. The work was commissioned by CMV Harmonie Sneek (based in Friesland, The Netherlands) to acknowledge their 95th anniversary. The composer based this work on the life of a former member of the band, who played flugelhorn in the ensemble until the age of 86. Their favourite piece of music, ‘Canon’ by Thomas Tallis, provided a great deal of musical inspiration for this characteristic and versatile work.A Man’s Destiny heeft als ondertitel de Friese regel ‘Yn Ieren en Sinen’ (vanuit volle overtuiging) meegekregen. Het werk is geschreven in opdracht van de CMV Harmonie Sneek ter gelegenheid van haar 95-jarig jubileum. De componist baseerde de compositie op het leven van een oud-lid van de vereniging een man die tot zijn 86e jaar de bugel bespeelde. As The Last Light Fades is a programmatic work, capturing the gradual shift when the sunset gives way to a brief moment of twilight, and the stars begin to take their place in the heavens waiting for darkness to blanket the sky. As the sun starts to descend beyond the horizon, a light rainfall plays percussively on the leaves hanging above. The music conveys the feeling of peace and tranquility that one can only really experience in nature, an ethereal and almost transcendent connection, undisturbed by the disruptions of the modern world.

The melody of Bundeslied originates from Mozart’s' Frimaurerkantate (KV62) from 1791. However research has shown evidence that it was probably composed by Johann Holzer, a freemason brother of his, but there is no definite evidence for this. Following the Second World War this melody was used as the basis for the new Austrian national anthem. Micheal Bilkes has adapted this beautiful, stately hymn for concert band. The result is a captivating work for both performers and audience.Die Melodie des Bundesliedes stammt aus der Erstausgabe von Wolfgang Amadeus Mozarts Freimaurerkantate, ihre genaue Urheberschaft ist jedoch umstritten. Nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg wurde die Melodie mit einem Text von Paula von Preradovic zur neuen Nationalhymne Österreichs erkoren. Diese wurde nach ihrer Einführung im Jahr 1947 schnell sehr gut vom österreichischen Volk angenommen. Michael Bilkes bearbeitete diese wunderschöne majestätische Hymne für Blasorchester. Das Resultat ist ein Werk, das sowohl die Spieler als auch ihre Zuhörer fesseln wird.En décembre 1791, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart compose sa dernière oeuvre complète, la Cantate maçonnique (KV 623), dans laquelle apparaît plusieurs reprises la mélodie du chant Bundeslied (Brüder reicht die Hand zum Bunde). De nombreuses recherches musicologiques donnent penser que cette mélodie est en réalité l’oeuvre de Johann Holzer, un « frère » franc-maçon. Toutefois, on ne dispose d’aucune preuve patente ce sujet.
