Jean Baptiste Arban was amongst the first of the great soloists of the then newly invented cornet and his post as first soloist in the Paris Opera Orchestra gave great respectability to the instrument. The Amazing Mr Arbancelebrates his melodic gift by grouping together and integrating several of the best known studies. The piano arrangement is by Nicholas Hare.

Guillaume Balay (1871-1943) served in the French military as a prolific Cornet player having won first place in the 1894 Cornet Award competition at the National Academy of Music in Paris. His compositions were popular in the Cornet and brass repertoire at the time including his Pièce De Concours for Cornet with Piano accompaniment. This Balay work remains within the brass repertoire to this day and is suitable for advanced level players as an audition or competition piece as indicated by the title as well as a performance work. Pièce De Concours contains use ofcadenza passages variation in time signature semiquaver flourishes articulations complex rhythms and chromaticism amongst other aspects. This quirky piece by Balay provides the advanced Cornet player with a fun alternative work which will show off their technical ability.

The Cornet Concerto was commissioned by the Black Dyke Band especially for their principal cornet Richard Marshall with funding generously provided by Arts Council England. The first performance was given on 30 April 2016 in Le Nouveau Siècle Concert Hall Lille France by Richard Marshall with Black Dyke Band conducted by Nicholas Childs. The first UK performance was given by the same performers on 10 July 2016 at The Royal Hall Harrogate as part of the 2016 Harrogate International Festival. Duration: 17 minutes.

French composer Eugène Cools published his Solo De Concours for Cornet and Piano in 1958. The work remains an important audition work particularly at the Paris Conservatoire. Cools' Solo De Concours addresses advanced features of the Cornet including semiquaver flourishes chromaticism and variations in performance directions amongst other aspects. For all aspiring Cornet performers Cools' Solo De Concours is an essential addition to the repertoire.

First published in 1915 this is a work that has stood the test of time by one of the Brass world's most important pedagogues Characteristic Studies for the Cornet should be part of any Trumpet student's library. This work will prove helpful and beneficial to the developing student.Herbert Lincoln Clarke was a well-known American Cornet player feature soloist bandmaster andcomposer. Clarke’s legacy includes composing a portion of the standard repertoire for the instrument many recordings as well as a seminal school of playing which emphasized not only technical aptitude but also increased warmth and lyricism of tone. He also produced several method books that are still used by Brass students to this day.

Morceau De Concours (1903) is a work for Cornet and Piano by Augustin Savard. Composed for the Paris Conservatoire contest this piece lasts approximately seven minutes and can be played by upper-intermediate and above level players . Starting solemnly the first half of the piece is quite slow while the second half is more energetic and more cheerful. This piece would also be great to use in recitals. Augustin Savard (1861-1942) is a French composer who won the Prix de Rome who composed some oratories and some orchestral works.
