'Hammerklavier' is a full-length cyclical work. The composer tries casting off the straight-jacket of hide-bound musical traditions, sending the listener on a voyage of discovery and liberation. The 'Hammer' of the title refers not to the action of the pianoforte nor to Beethoven's 'Hammerklaviersonate' but to the mental approach required of the performer who needs to be a true 'performance artist'. The toccata genre has undergone great change since Bach’s time. Originally denoting works of recitative or improvisatory character, since the 19th century the emphasis has been on a continuous pulsating rhythm. In Prokofiev’s masterpiece, composed in 1912, this rhythm grows into a hammering motoric drive that dispenses with developed themes or motifs. That which seems fascinating and enthralling to us today came as a shock to the critics of that time. But there were also proponents such as Prokofiev's friend Nikolai Myaskovsky, who wrote of the Toccata: “It is a fiendishly clever thing, edgy, energetic and full of personality”. Besides the printed editions that appeared during Prokofiev's lifetime we also had the autograph at our disposal for this Urtext edition. Yulianna Avdeeva, a master of virtuoso piano music, has been responsible for the fingerings.

Kalevi Aho's Piano Sonata No. 2 Hommage a Beethoven (2016) is a tribute to that great giant of the piano sonata, Beethoven. The very opening bars already allude to the older master's most mammoth sonata, the Hammerklavier, op. 106. In many places, Aho has spread the texture over three staves in his search for a mighty sound. The third movement is in the nature of a scherzo, drawing on musical material from the second movement of the Hammerklavier. There are no allusions to Beethoven in the fourth movement, but its texture, with bells, is somehow evocative of Mussorgsky's Great Gate of Kiev. The last movement gathers the sonata's motifs together again until, little by little, they disperse and chirruping birdsong leads the sonata to an enigmatic conclusion. The sonata is dedicated to Sonja Fraki, who premiered the work at Mantta Music Festival in August 2018.
