Between 1717 and 1723 Johann Sebastian Bach composed Six Suites for Violoncello (BWV 1007 - BWV 1012). Of these, the first three have been transcribed for Guitar in this coursebook, which in itself is a considerable amount of work. For guitarists these compositions are a real challenge - a challenge, however, that brings with it a lot of benefits.

The cantata Ich ruf zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ begins with an expansive chorale arrangement, for which Bach reverted to a proven model: The four voices of the solo ensemble take over the chorale, in which the melody lies in the soprano. For stanzas 2-4 Bach chooses the aria form with a highly differentiated scoring from movement to movement, ranging from a continuo Aria (1st movement), up to an aria accompanied by the violin, with obbligato bassoon and continuo. The first performance of this cantata, which belongs to Bach's third annual cycle of cantatas, took place on the 2nd day of Christmas in 1725. With the exception of the closing chorale, with a text from 1711 by Georg Christian Lehms, the text of the cantata refers to St. Stephan, the first martyr of the New Testament and patron saint whose name day occurs on 26 December. In a dialog between the Soul (Soprano) and Jesus (bass) the struggle with sin is recounted respectively in two expressive arias arias. If you look at the first bars of Ansgar Krauses arrangement (and transposition to E-minor) of the E-flat minor Prelude from Bachs Well-Tempered Clavier I and forget the famous original for a moment, you might think that the piece was originally written for guitar. Equally idiomatic are the arrangements of the other preludes in this collection, which Ansgar Krause has hand-tailored to his instrument. They stem chiefly either from the Well-Tempered Clavier or the Six Little Preludes BWV 933-938.
