As a young professional player in the 1960s, my work as a double bassist with chamber ensembles and small orchestras took me all over the world. This presented an unparalleledopportunity to scour libraries and archives wherever I went. Long before the advent of the photocopier and e-mail, research was far more challenging than it is today. Eastern Europe was particularly difficult to access, withmanycollections kept under lock and key for all but a few hours a week. One quickly found colleagues who were keen to share information gleaned in passing, even though they had no specific interest in one's own particularspecialism (it is so often the peripheral topics that fascinate as much as the main subject under investigation, and one can quickly be side-tracked into political and social issues that have only slender bearing on the job inhand!).

In the early 1970s James Brown, the then sub-principal oboist of the English Chamber Orchestra with whom I was working at the time, stumbled across a small collection of double bass manuscripts at the RoyalDanish State Library in Copenhagen. They were by Franz Anton Leopold Keÿper (b. c.1756, d. Copenhagen 7 June 1815), a double bassist of Dutch origin who worked as principal of the Royal Chapel Orchestra in Copenhagen.Keÿper's son was the bassoonist Franz Jacob August Keÿper (1792-1859). The collection included a number of concertos, some chamber music, and various naïve fragments. Although hardly the work of a Mozart or Haydn,the style is characteristic of the period. For an instrument such as the double bass, whose 18th century solo repertoire is largely written for tunings that are no longer in everyday use, Keÿper's music is easily approachablein its.

Während die eindrucksvolle Harbour Bridge von Sidney vor ihm auftaucht, ist er in Gedanken bei den heißen Stränden im Stillen Ozean. Auf einmal kommt ihm das Thema in den Sinn, das er einst über die Gewässer Japans komponiert hatte. Liegt es an den asiatischen Einflüssen, die im kosmopolitischen Sydney so vielfältig vertretensind? Oder sind es die Wasser rund um Sydney, über die er nach Tahiti segeln könnte? Er ist sich unsicher. Könnte er genau dieses Thema für eine neue Komposition über die Metropole Sydney verwenden? Wie sollte er seine Träume vom Pazifik, seine Pacific Dreams, in diese Mixtur einbringen? Vielleicht könnte er den Wortschatz von Inseln wie Hawaii und Tahiti für seine Komposition verwenden. Und einen gemischten Chor die schönen Vokalverbindungen ad libitum singen lassen. Mit diesen Ideen im Kopf steigt er in die Metro am Circular Quay. Auf ins Hotel und frisch ans Werk! Jetzt muss er einfach komponieren....

Pacific Dreams descrive l’esperienza di Miguel, un compositore spagnolo che, stanco della vita nella terra natia, parte per un viaggio a Sydney dove scopre una stampa raffigurante i cavalloni del Pacifico. Improvvisamente Miguel ricorda un tema composto in precedenza sui laghi giapponesi. E’ l’influenza asiatica presente nella cosmopolita Sydney che porta questo tema alla mente? Oppure è l’acqua attorno a Sydney sulla quale si può navigare verso Tahiti? Non si sa, ma Miguel avverte l’immediato bisogno di rientrare in albergo e comporre….

Snow Gum by Fran Griffin for Two Flutes and Guitar. Alto and Bass Flutes are required for the performance of this piece. From the composer: In the wilderness of the Australian Alps, there is only one tree, the Snow Gum (eucalyptus pauciflora) that lives above 1600 metres. Snow Gums are experiencing severe dieback, caused by attack by a native beetle. Strangely, the beetle and the Snow Gums have coexisted for thousands of years, but now the Snow Gums are no longer able to withstand the hunger of the beetles. As yet the reasons for this are unknown. Huge areas of these once magnificent and colourful trees now stand grey and dead. In this piece I am depicting the gnarled and twisted trunks of the still living trees with their wonderfully coloured bark, in contrast to the ruggedness and desolation of the terrain. One can hear the alpine wind rushing through the leaves and branches, shaking snow to the ground..

A tribute to the inspirational Brazilian guitarist Yamandu Costa, Shanghai is Australian slang for a slingshot. This is a term I remember from my childhood in north Queensland where a shanghai made from sticks and rubber was a prized possession for a young boy up to mischief. When pulled back the rubber stretches, and as it snaps back into shape, a stone or other form of ammunition is projected into the distance. This action reminds me of the dynamic and joyful qualities of Yamandu Costa’s performances. Shanghai aims to capture some of the energy, playfulness and musical expression Yamandu brings to everything he plays.

Hommage au guitariste brésilien Yamandu Costa, « Shanghai » est un argot australien désignant une fronde. C'est un terme dont je me souviens de mon enfance dans le nord du Queensland, où un « Shanghai » fabriqué à partir de bâtons et de caoutchouc était un bien précieux pour un jeune garçon prêt à faire des bêtises. Lorsqu'il est retiré, le caoutchouc s'étire et, lorsqu'il reprend sa forme, une pierre ou une autre forme de munition est projetée au loin. Cette action me rappelle les qualités dynamiques et joyeuses des performances de Yamandu Costa. Shanghai vise à capturer une partie de l'énergie, du caractère ludique et de l'expression musicale que Yamandu apporte à tout ce qu'il joue.
