Adiós Nonino is an enchanting and passionate tango written by the Argentine composer and accordion player Astor Piazzolla. Although the piece was originally written for accordion Klaas van der Woude has created a great arrangement for concert band.

Le tango fait désormais son entrée dans le domaine de la musique de concert. Un soir de 1959, Piazzolla apprend le décès de son père. Il compose un tango pour bandonéon aux caractéristiques inhabituelles : Ad os Nonino. Une œuvre intimiste, aux harmonies éthérées, qui rompt avec les rythmes traditionnels du tango.

This work was composed as a commission by the Keika Gakuen Symphonic Band, to commemorate their 40th annual concert. The composition is a march-style work that begins with a chorale based on a theme from the school song—a distinctive motif that reappears in the middle section. Tetsuya Kashino, a graduate of the high school, is a band coach and has a deep friendship with the composer. Kashino named the work Scent of Spring, which reflects two distinct meanings—firstly, in Japanese, a part of the band’s own name, and also “a premiere in Spring”. Scent of Spring is a bright and optimistic piece of music, suitable to perform on various occasions.

Dit werk is geschreven in opdracht van de Keika Gakuen Symphonic Band, een schoolorkest uit Tokio, ter gelegenheid van hun veertigste jaarconcert. Deze in marsstijl geschreven compositie begint met een op een thema uit het schoollied gebaseerd koraal: een motief dat nog eens opduikt in het middengedeelte. Tetsuya Kashino, een orkestleider die zelf ook op de betreffende school heeft gezeten, is nauw bevriend met de componist: hij heeft het werk Scent of Spring gedoopt, met in zijn achterhoofd twee betekenissen: ten eerste komt deze titel in het Japans deels overeen met de orkestnaam, ook verwijst de titel naar ‘een première in de lente’. Scent of Spring iseen opgewekt, optimistisch werk dat geschikt is voor diverse gelegenheden.

Dieses Werk wurde von der Keika Gakuen Symphonic Band anlässlich des 40-jährigen Konzertjubiläums in Auftrag gegeben. Das Werk wurde im Marschstil komponiert und beginnt mit einem Choral, der auf einem Thema des Schulliedes basiert ein charakteristisches Motiv, das im Mittelteil wieder aufgenommen wird. Tetsuya Kashino, ein Absolvent der Highschool, ist Orchesterleiter und eng mit dem Komponisten befreundet. Kashino gab dem Werk den Titel Scent of Spring“, was zwei verschiedene Bedeutungen zum Ausdruck bringt: einerseits ist es ein Teil des Orchesternamens auf Japanisch, andererseits bedeutet es eine Premiere im Frühling“. Scent of Spring ist ein fröhliches undoptimistisches Musikstück, das sich für alle möglichen Gelegenheiten eignet.

Il a donné le titre de Scent of Spring (« parfum de printemps ») l’œuvre, ce qui a deux sens différents : d’abord, une partie du nom de la formation en japonais, mais aussi une allusion sa première qui eut lieu au printemps. Scent of Spring est une pièce de musique vive etoptimiste qui convient chaque occasion.

La composizione ha lo stile di una marcia che comincia con una corale basata su un tema della canzone della scuola - un tema distintivo che riappare anche nella sezione di mezzo. Tetsuya Kashino, insegnante della Banda e legato da profonda amicizia col compositore, ha voluto intitolare la composizione Scent of Spring, nome che riflette due significati distinti - in primo luogo, in giapponese, una parte del nome proprio della banda, ma anche col significato di una prima in primavera. The Samba is a Latin American dance, which is mostly associated with parties, as a result of the fast tempo in which it is usually played.
‘Sumba Samba’ forms an exception to this rule. In order to get this samba to swing it is important to stick to the tempo prescribed.
‘Sumba Samba’ starts with a motif which will play an important role throughout the piece. This motif can be heard in the first notes of the ‘refrain’ and, as said before, has been used in the introduction, as well as in the transition after the middle part (letter G). Furthermore, it plays an important role in the middle part itself (letter E), in which the samba has momentarily disappeared and acompletely different atmosphere has been created. At letter H we pick up where we left off with the samba and swing to the end of this composition.

De Samba is een Latijns-Amerikaanse dans. De dans wordt meestal geassocieerd met feest, door het vaak snelle tempo waarin het gespeeld wordt.
‘Sumba Samba’ vormt hier een uitzondering op. Om deze samba te laten swingen is hetbelangrijk het voorgeschreven tempo te handhaven.
‘Sumba Samba’ begint met een motief dat in de hele compositie een belangrijke rol speelt. Het zijn de eerste noten van het thema van het ‘refrein’ en wordt zoals gezegd gebruikttijdens de inleiding en bij de overgang na het tussendeel. (letter G). Bovendien speelt het een belangrijke rol in het tussendeel (letter E) waar de samba even weg is en een heel andere sfeer ontstaat. Bij letter H pakken wede samba weer op en swingen we naar het slot.

In 1911 the Russian impresario Diaghilev commisioned Paul Dukas to compose music for the famous ballet fairy-tale 'La Perie'by Jean Coralli.
Fokine was to make a new choreography, so that the Russian ballet company 'Ballet Russes' would be able to perform the piece in Paris that same year.
Due to a quarrel between Diaghilev and Dukas about who should dance the title-part, however, the ballet was not performed by the 'Ballet Russes'but by another company in 1912.
The ballet 'La Perie' is Dukas' last symphonic work. In 1911 gaf de Russische impresario Diaghilev Paul Dukas opdracht om muziek te componeren voor het beroemde ballet sprookje 'La Perie' van Jean Coralli.
Fokine was gevraagd om een nieuwe choreografie te maken, zodat het Russische balletgezelschap 'Ballet Russes' in staat zou zijn om het stuk in Parijs op te voeren in datzelfde jaar.
Door een ruzie tussen Diaghilev en Dukas over de vraag wie de hoofdrol mocht dansen, werd het ballet in 1912 echter niet uitgevoerd door het 'Ballet Russes' maar door een ander gezelschap.
Het ballet 'La Perie' is het laatste symfonische werk van Dukas.

Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) completed his Piano Concerto No. 3 in C minor in 1803, not long after writing the famous letter to his brothers, the Heiligenstadt Testament, in which he lamented his increasing deafness. He gave the first performance of the piece, as soloist, on April 5 in a public benefit concert at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna. The opening melody in the first movement bears striking similarity to the first theme heard in Mozart's 24th piano concerto. As a whole, the piece provides an essential link between the Mozartean charm of the two earlier concertos and the more idiosyncratic work found in his middle period.
