This is the first time that it has been tried to put the history of music education, seen from a perspective relating to cultural history as well as to the history of ideas, into a time frame of more than 3,000 years. This is associated with the claim to paint a picture which does not begin around 800 or not even before 1800, as has been the case up to now. Musical 'world views' have influenced entire nations, periods of history and cultural areas, affecting even their political structure: Music has 'educated' in the original sense of the word. The reader is introduced to 40 stages in our cultural and educational history: from antiquity to the present time.Awarded with the Deutscher Musikeditionspreis 2006.

Franz Schubert wrote the two movements of the Unfinished Symphony in October 1822. The torso has since been posing riddles to posterity, which first learned of the existence of this masterpiece in 1865 through the simultaneous first edition and world-premiere performance. There seems to have been no external reason for its creation. Did Schubert really consider the piece only as an experiment that did not warrant any continuation? It should be noted, however, that Schubert sketched the Scherzo up to the beginning of the Trio, and even fully orchestrated nine measures of this movement.

This virtuoso etude has been given the nickname “Black Key Study†by pianists, since, apart from one single F in m. 66, the right hand does not touch a single white key. This gives the harmony a pentatonic, almost Debussy-an character, and has most certainly contributed to its great popularity. Those who are not ready to tackle the complete volume of Chopin Etudes (HN 124) will be well served by this separate Urtext edition.

Program Notes: Festival in Russia is a transcription for concert band of Anatoli Liadov's dazzling orchestral work, Polonaise (Op. 49). Written at the turn of the century, its energetic dance rhythms and melodic expressiveness will bring a delightful Old World charm to today's audiences. Liadov (1855-1914) was a student of Rimsky-Korsakov at the St. Petersburg Conservatory, and succeeded him as the composition teacher. (One of Liadov's most notable students at the Conservatory was Sergei Prokofiev.) At the time the Polonaise was written (1899), Liadov was at the height of his profession and one of his era's most respected and widely-known composers. The first performance of this transcription for concert band was given by the West Virginia University Wind Symphony at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts on February 24, 1988, Don Wilcox conducting. Ensemble instrumentation: 1 Piccolo, 4 Flute I, 4 Flute II, 1 Oboe I, 1 Oboe II, 1 English Horn, 1 Bassoon I, 1 Bassoon II, 1 Eb Clarinet, 4 Bb Clarinet I, 4 Bb Clarinet II, 4 Bb Clarinet III, 1 Eb Alto Clarinet, 1 Eb ContrabassClarinet, 3 Bb Bass Clarinet & Bb Contrabass Clarinet, 3 Eb Alto Saxophone I, 3 Eb Alto Saxophone II, 2 Bb Tenor Saxophone, 2 Eb Baritone Saxophone, 3 Bb Cornet I, 3 Bb Cornet II, 3 Bb Cornet III, 2 Bb Trumpet I, 2 Bb Trumpet II, 2 F Horn I & III, 2 F Horn II & IV, 2 Trombone I, 2 Trombone II, 2 Bass Trombone, 3 Euphonium, 2 Euphonium T.C., 4 Tuba, 2 Timpani, 2 Bells & Vibraphone, 3 Chimes, Triangle & Cymbals, 2 Xylophone & Marimba, 2 Snare Drum & Bass Drum.

Cesar Franck wrote his Symphony in D minor in 1887/88; in spite of the work's lukewarm reception at its world premiere on 17 February 1889, the work was published during his lifetime. It was not until a few years later that the established conductors dared perform this work more frequently . It marked the inevitable triumph of a work which had once caused such a furor and whose individuality of conception burst the framework of the genre (double tonality of D and F minor in the opening movement; the combination of Andante and Scherzo in the central one; the recapitulation of the main themes and motifs of the previous movements in the finale). The work was finally accepted into the concert repertoire for good around the turn of the century, not least through the good offices of influential critics and composers.Just as with the previously published Carnival of the Animals (PB/OB 5321) by Saint-Saens, Franck's work also raises many questions concerning its origin and history. Peter Jost based his work on the first edition (the autograph was destroyed in a fire in 1935) as well as on the piano reduction (four-handed) by the composer.A major work of the late-romantic repertoire, Cesar Franck's only symphony joins the ranks of Breitkopf & Hartel's new orchestral editions which follow the principles of Source Criticism for Practical Use.

UPC: 038081562216. English. Traditional Spanish Carol.
Victor's arrangement of this gentle nativity carol from Spain is sung entirely in the original language (a pronunciation and translation are included). This sensitive treatment captures the lullaby mood and adds a light rhythmic undercurrent in moderate 3/4 time. The tonality shifts seamlessly between D minor and D major to reflect a text that moves from quieting the baby to a rushing fountain and singing birds. While the words do return, no two verses are set in the same manner, creating an ever-evolving arrangement. Piano fingers dance over the keys with triplet turns and easily grasp the bigger chords in the supportive and stylistic accompaniment. A nice contrast on holiday programs.

(Nicolaus A.
