Kevin Volans' String Quartet No. 9: Shiva Dances was commissioned by BBC Radio 3 and first performed by the Smith Quartet at the 2004 Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival.Kevin Volans (the composer) notes on the piece:In the past I have been interested in trying to go beyond historicism (1970s), beyond style(1980s) and beyond form (1990s) in my work. Looking back over the music of the twentiethcentury I was struck by the fact the nearlyall of it is extremely 'busy', almost cluttered. Italmost seemed that composers felt compelled to look industrious. In the new millennium Ithought it would be interesting to try and eliminate content. I also aspired to movingfrommusic (sound as art) to art (art as sound). This, of course, has already been done by a numberof composers (many from New York - Phil Niblock and La Monte Young, to name but two), butit was something I had never tried.AlthoughI found it annoying that the label 'minimalist' was given to my African-based work, and fearing this would make the label stick, I set out to write a piece which reflected my loveof minimal painting and architecture. The Japanesehave a term 'wabi' meaning 'voluntarypoverty' or 'emptiness' to describe their restrained minimal aesthetic, an aesthetic which, however, pays greatest attention to the quality of material and fine detail. I like to think thatthelack of excessive pitch material in this piece reflects a kind of voluntary poverty. When Shiva is portrayed dancing (as Nataraj) He is depicted in a circle of flames crushing asmall figure - the ego - underfoot. You get theimpression He dances on the spot, not movingaround at all. I like that. The piece is dedicated to Pablo Pascual Cilleruelo.

The projects have yielded more than 100 discs that showcase the creative energy of thousands of world-renowned composers and gifted musicians. Winds magazine offers the following regarding the body of work: “This series has immense historic value in documenting the best of the repertoire...as well as providing much sheer listening (and viewing) pleasure for the level of artistry in the performances. The acoustic quality of the recording is state-of-the- art...All of the works are superbly realized and worthy of exploration...these discs represent the standards to which all must aspire.† This is a monumental recording that should be listened to and studied by every serious concert percussionist. The writing for percussion and winds is innovative and cutting edge, and there is much here for composers to learn about scoring for percussion and winds. The [University of North Texas] Wind Symphony performs these works fabulously and flawlessly, and the baton of Maestro Corporon is evident throughout. —Tom Morgan, Percussive Notes • Vol. 56, No. 3 • July 2018 Watch this video: Eugene Corporon and Mark Ford Discuss Contact Read Mark Ford's commentary on his project with Eugene Corporon: Contact Contents 1. In Concerto d’Amore, a maestoso opening is followed by a quick and energetic movement that leads to a magnificent adagio. A motif from this adagio can be heard in a swinging movement, after which the piece comes to a close with the return of the adagio. This arrangement for concert band certainly brings this beautiful music to life. Concerto d’Amore vereinigt drei unterschiedliche Stile: Barock, Pop und Jazz. The orchestration of NOBILITAS is full of warmth and sonority, illustrating the dignified character of the piece. it seems to emanate the solemnity and nobility of an ‘éminence grise’ such as Yoshihiro Kimura, on whom’s character the composer was inspired by.

Equali were works written for equal, or similar, instruments; in the eighteenth century they were almost always used for funeral services and usually employed a quartet of trombones. The most famous of these were the three Beethoven wrote for the Linz Cathedral in Austria on All Soul's Day 1812. Two of these were adapted later for male voices and were sung at Beethoven's funeral.
These pieces are some of the most famous works for trombones, no doubt due to the fact that they were composed by Beethoven. They were commissioned by Franz Xaver Gloggl, Kappelmeister of the city of Linz, while Beethoven was visiting his brother. According to later accounts by Gloggl's son, although his father had a complete collection of trombones (soprano, alto, tenor, bass or quart) the three Equali were performed by a traditional quartet of alto, tenor and bass trombones.
This edition offers a compromise: the original score and parts are given exactly as written in the complete works, and a version designed for the less experienced players: the three movements are transposed down one step, edited with minor musical suggestions, and all four parts are written in bass clef.
Dr. Mathie has done the Trombone world a great service in bringing this great work in its two forms to publication.

Taken from a collection of medieval folktales, the Hansel and Gretel libretto was based on an adaptation of the Brothers Grimm fairy tale. The story features two quick-witted and capable children—a brother and sister who face many difficult times, including hunger and abandonment. Looking for food to eat, the children get lost in the forest and wake up only to meet more danger in disguise. In the happy ending, Hansel and Gretel are found in the forest by their parents. All together, they sing thanks and praise, expressing joy and gratitude for their good fortune. The ancient story of Hansel and Gretel is a fairy tale with true relevance in the world today. About the Series: Doreen Rao, 2019 Robert Shaw Award recipient, launches her culturally inclusive choral series, Global Encounters for Young Voices, featuring accessible treble- and mixed-voice works for developing choirs.
