Belgian composer Jef Joseph Maes (1905 – 1996) often described himself as a modern romantic, and his 1948 Arabesque and Scherzo for flute and piano (written as a concours piece for the Royal Conservatoire Antwerp in Belgium) is a testament to that label. Quite aside from its appeal to flutists as a competition work - with its origins as a concours piece allowing the player to display both technical and musical prowess - the music itself holds touches of Korngold and early Hindemith in its lush melodies and moments of sultry film music. And, though Maes held no truck with most elements of modernism, his clever take on neo-romantic harmony and a healthy touch of humor keeps the piece sounding fresh and appealing. Constructed on the model of more famous Paris Conservatoire pieces - Gaubert's Nocturne et Allegro Scherzando, for example, or Enesco's Cantabile et Presto - the Arabesque and Scherzo revels in the two-movement format. The opening Arabesque allows the flutist to sing, with ornamentation and figurations highlighting the flute's ability to color octave-spanning melody with technique. The Scherzo alternates between action sequences and moments of reverie, but always with an ear towards vivid musicality and clear conversation between flute and piano.

LITTLE ANGEL was composed in loving memory of a friend’s daughter who was stillborn, to commemorate a life unlived. The first movement, Hopes and Dreams, opens the work with sweet optimism and charm. The second movement, Anticipation and Loss is a musical setting of joy followed by profound sadness. LITTLE ANGEL concludes with Finding Peace as the third movement opens with grief and longing, followed by a plaintive cadenza, and finally ending with peace and hope.Little Angel was commissioned by Janelle Barrera in loving memory of her daughter Daisy Rose who was stillborn, to commemorate a life unlived.Little Angel is written for flute and piano in three movements:1. Hopes and Dreams: The first movement begins with three brief statements that are introspective and hopeful, looking toward the future, followed by a lyrical melody in 3/4 meter.2. Anticipation and Loss: The second movement opens with a playful melody in mixed meter combining simple time and compound time. At letter C, the tempo slows, and the tone becomes decidedly more serious and eventually more somber.3. Finding Peace: The third movement opens with a melody expressing grief and longing, followed by a plaintive cadenza, and finally ending with peace and hope.

Exploiting the Flute to its full potential, Italian Fantasy is an exciting and challenging addition to the advanced flautist's repertoire. From cadenza passages to a delightful 6/8 melody, this piece by French composer Eugene Bozza (1905-1991) covers a huge variety of the Flute's possibilities. The piece begins with an emotional, characterised cadenza, covering a wide range. This leads dramatically into a 6/8 section accompanied by broken chords in the piano before ending with a quirky and lively 2/4 secton. Bozza's Italian Fantasy for Flute and Piano is not only symbolic, but also includes exciting challenges, making for an imperative performance piece in the Flute repertoire. .

The cycle of suites for flute and basso continuo, Op. 5 is J.-M. Hotteterre's second important set of works in this genre. The first published as Op. 2 has a special significance in the history of music and for performing practice. The composer added namely to the second edition of the work sufficient information concerning ornamentation and performance. (For the modern critical edition of Op. 2 see volume Z. 13901 of the Urtext Series of EMB.) Hotteterre's Op. 5 published in the present edition is an organic continuation of Op. 2. This fact was also emphasized by the composer himself who entitled them ''Premier Livre'' and ''Deuxiéme Livre' on publication. The ornamentsand directions for performance occur here just as copiously as in the revised edition of ''Premier Livre''.

Originally for Clarinet and Piano, Robert Schumann’s deep yet delightful set of three FANTASIESTÜCKE, Op. 73 has long been a staple of the repertoire, with transcriptions occasionally seeping into other instruments’ libraries as well. The work has been elegantly adapted (into a new key) for Flute and Piano by Mark Sparks, principal flutist of the Saint Louis Symphony.Notes on the Edition, by Mark SparksThe remarkable and imaginative Fantasiestücke, Op. 73, were originally composed for clarinet and piano during 2 days in February 1849. Schumann indicated that the pieces could also be played on cello or viola. This arrangement for flute and piano has been transposed from the original key of A major to C major in order to limit octave transfer and facilitate performance, while still preserving the original, rather darker-hued timbral character of the work.Flutists will delight in the extremely lyrical and evocative nature of the writing, especially the capricious middle section of the second piece, “Lebhaft, leicht (Lively, light),†and the brilliant, effusive third piece, “Rasch und mit Feuer†(Quick and with fire). The virtuosic practice of repeating the eighth-note in the opening melody of the final piece, adopted from editions for cello, is also well-suited to the flute.Phrases of appropriate length, relatively few potential balance problems, and the accessibility of the pieces for all levels of performers and audiences make the Fantasiestücke a natural, pleasant, and versatile addition to the flutist’s recital repertoire.

Inspired by the French Romantic and Impressionist traditions, my romances for fute and piano, composed during late July and early August 1984, was carefully conceived for the marvelous lyrical and technical gifts of Robert Stallman and Richard Goode, to whom the work is warmly dedicated. All three Romances, although brief in duration, unfold with a sense of large gesture and design. The first Romance is in 3/4 time and flows generally in the manner of a lyrical waltz with occasional turbulent interruptions. The second Romance is in 4/4 time, unfolding in a stately Baroque-like manner, and the third Romance is in 2/4 time, melodically expansive and often tempestuous. All three Romances strive to honor the goals of traditional performance practice while, at the same time, they create an energy and drama of modernity and contemporary richness. And for these goals I am indebted to so many of the most outstanding performers and conductors of our time with whom I have worked and from whom I have learned much– those who have demonstrated the importance of preserving in addition to further developing those significant natural attributes of musical expression and traditional performance practice which are so often ignored in contemporary compositional values. — William Thomas McKinleyFlute & Piano Duration: 14' Composed: 1984 Published by: Notevole Music Publishing.

Inspired by one of the flute repertoire’s loveliest melodies, SICILIANO (REIMAGINED) is a gently adapted “jazz-flavored†setting of the slow movement from Bach’s Sonata in Eb Major. Solo parts are provided both for C Flute and for Alto Flute. With a fairly close rendering of the authentic flute line and more contemporary chords in the piano part, SICILIANO (REIMAGINED) is an inviting way to play music with a modernized jazz sound, while reading traditional classical notation.Inspired by one of the flute repertoire’s loveliest melodies, Siciliano (Reimagined) never strays far from the source, except for its reharmonization. Occasional jazz-infused touches give the melody a fresh perspective, without diluting its purity. I am always moved by how beautifully the music of the 18th century and contemporary music coexist.Performers may play this arrangement in the Baroque style.

Sonatinette is a wonderful work composed by Jacques Delacroix, arranged for Flute and Piano. The piece lasts approximately 4 minutes 45 seconds and would be perfect as part of a performance, or even simply to improve your Flute repertoire. For flautists looking for a brilliant addition to their repertoire, Sonatinette is a melodically complex work that is as lovely to hear as it is exciting to play..
