David's music allows the Trombonist to sing and soar in 3 contrasting movements filled with vivid colors, beautiful and expressive harmonies, and a wonderful flowing rhythmic energy. The outer movements crackle withenergy, showcasing the amazing technique of soloist Ron Barron, as the melodic line shifts and changes with playful abandon, while the middle movement is heartfelt and lyrical, with beautiful melodic lines, supported by resonant, gorgeous harmonies. The work is a real tour de force andrightly deserves to take its place as a significant addition to the Trombone repertoire..

Composed by Jean-Michel Defaye in 1954, Two Dances is the piece that put him under the international spotlight. Written for trombone and piano, it quickly became standard for the trombone repertoire and would fit advanced players' skills. The first part, called âDanse Sacrée,â is a slow lyrical melody that is re-used through the piece until the cadenza and the second, âDanse Profane,â has a samba rhythm with a really cheerful end. These two pieces both contain some basics of Jazz. As a pianist, composer, producer and arranger, Jean-Michel Defaye mainly created pieces for brass and wind instruments. He won the Premier Second Grand Prix de Rome in 1958 and the Belgian Queen Elizabeth composition competition in 1959.

Max Warnecke's Konzertstuck is characteristic of the nineteenth-century solo Trombone tradition. At six minutes in duration, it is considerably shorter than contemporary solos of the time such as the Grafe Concerto. Like the David Concertino it uses similar martial-style opening and closing themes with a lyrical middle section. The solo and piano accompaniment are of medium difficulty and appropriate for school recitals or professional performances.

The Skye Boat Song, among the most popular of all Scottish folk tunes, deals with the flight of Bonnie Prince Charlie (Charles Edward Stewart) from Scotland to the Isle of Skye in 1746, after having been defeated on Culloden Moor by the English Army of King George II. The present setting, for either Tenor or Bass Trombone and Piano, is mostly lyrical and passes through a series of episodes that evoke watery images in various ways. A stormy episode which superimposes a more martial tune (relying heavily on the familiar scotch snappy rhythm) against a variation of the original folk tune leads to brief quotations from Mendelssohn's Hebrides overture (the Isle of Skye is part of the group of islands known as the Hebrides) before a short recapitulation of the theme.
