As the title suggests, this opening work consists of a fanfare and a hymn. This work was written for the opening ceremony of the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in Oberstdorf (Allgäu, Germany) and can be played in four different versions depending on your needs or the players available. You can use a complete version, a short fanfare played just by trumpets (cornets), trombones and timpani, a double fanfare (extended with tutti-band) or a fanfare version followed by the hymn. Nordic Fanfare and Hymn is an extremely practical and versatile ceremonial opening piece.

Zoals de titel aangeeft, bestaat dit openingswerk uit een fanfare en een hymne. Het werd geschreven voor de openingsceremonie van de FIS Nordische wereldkampioenschappen skiën in Oberstdorf (Allgäu, Duitsland). Het werk kan in vierverschillende versies worden gespeeld. Er is een volledige versie. Een korte fanfare door trompetten (of cornetten), trombones en pauken, een dubbele fanfare (uitgebreid met tutti-orkest), en een fanfareversie gevolgd door een deelvan de hymne.

Dieses Werk wurde für die Eröffnungszeremonie der FIS Nordische Skimeisterschaften in Oberstdorf im Allgäu geschrieben. Es kann in vier verschiedenen Versionen gespielt werden, da viele Blasorchester in der täglichen Praxis unterschiedliche zeremonielle Varianten benötigen. Der Komponist stellte hierfür eine vollständige Version zusammen, eine kurze Fanfare für Trompeten, Posaunen und Pauken, eine Doppelfanfare (erweitert durch ein Tutti) sowie eine Fanfareversion, gefolgt von einem Teil der Hymne.

Noridc Fanfare & Hymn è stato scritto per la cerimonia di apertura dei Campionati del Mondo di Sci Nordico di Obersdtorf in Germania. Per renderne possibile l’utilizzo in diverse cerimonie, questa composizione può essere interpretata in quattro versioni diverse. Una versione integrale; una versione costituita da una breve fanfara suonata dalle trombe (cornette), dai tromboni e dai timpani; una versione in fanfara doppia (seguita da un tutti orchestrale) e una versione composta da una fanfara seguita da un estratto dell’inno.

A Midwest Fanfare was commissioned by the Brass Band of Battle Creek and premiered by them during their appearance at the Midwest Clinic in Chicago on 20th December 2017 where this fanfare was the opening piece of the entire event. This piece is designed to be played with the cornets split into two teams either side of the band. It opens with the two groups answering each other antiphonally over a repeated figure in the lower band. A calmer central section introduces a euphonium solo which is then taken up by the whole ensemble. This leads back to a repeat of the opening fanfares over a rhythmic accompaniment and a short coda which brings the work to a close.

A Midwest Fanfare werd geschreven in opdracht van de Brass Band of Battle Creek en op 20 december 2017 door dit ensemble in première gebracht als openingswerk op de Midwest Clinic in Chicago. Het werk is zo gecomponeerd dat de kornetten in twee teams worden verdeeld, die aan weerszijden van de band komen te staan. Deze twee groepen antwoorden elkaar op antifonale wijze boven een herhaald motief in de lagere registers. Een rustiger centraal gedeelte introduceert een eufoniumsolo, die aansluitend wordt overgenomen door de complete band. Deze passage mondt uit in een herhaling van de openingsfanfares boven een ritmische begeleiding, waarna het werk met een korte coda fraaiwordt afgesloten.

A Midwest Fanfare wurde von der Brass Band of Battle Creek in Auftrag gegeben und bei ihrem Auftritt anlässlich der Midwest Clinic in Chicago am 20. Dezember 2017 uraufgeführt, wo diese Fanfare den Auftakt für die gesamte Veranstaltung bildete. Das Stück ist so konzipiert, dass die Kornette in zwei Gruppen aufgeteilt sind und auf beiden Seiten der Brass Band platziert werden. Es beginnt mit einem Wechselgesang der beiden Gruppen, der über einer sich wiederholenden Melodie in den tieferen Stimmen der Brass Band erklingt. Im ruhigeren Mittelteil wird ein Euphonium-Solo vorgestellt, das dann vom gesamten Ensemble aufgenommen wird. Schließlich kehren die Eröffnungsfanfarenüber einer rhythmischen Begleitung zurück und eine kurze Coda bringt das Werk zum Abschluss.

A Midwest Fanfare est une commande du Brass Band de Battle Creek, qui l’a créée le 20 décembre 2017 lors d’un concert dans le cadre de la Midwest Clinic, Chicago, où elle a été choisie comme fanfare d’ouverture. L’instrumentation divise les cornets en deux groupes de part et d’autre de l’orchestre. La pièce s’ouvre avec les deux groupes qui se répondent antiphonalement sur un motif répété par les basses. Un passage central plus calme introduit un solo d’euphonium qui est ensuite repris par l’orchestre entier. La fanfare du début revient alors sur un accompagnement rythmique avant une brève coda qui achève la pièce.

Ceremonial Entry is a non-programmatic introductory work in which the timpani’s set a slow movement supported by a long pedal in the basses. Interrupted by signal like motifs the dynamics gradually increase resulting in a heroic trumpet-call. The motion becomes rounder and is followed by a section which brings to mind the rhythmical cadence of galley slaves rowing. As the opening slow movement returns a climax follows similar to the “Pini di Roma” from the Italian composer Ottorino Respighi. Ceremonial Entry was composed to celebrate the 25th Frysk Fanfare Festival.

Ceremonial Entry is een non-programmatisch openingswerk waarin de pauken een langzame, stuwende beweging in gang zetten ondersteund door een lang orgelpunt in de bassen. Onderbroken door signaal-achtige motieven wordt de dynamieklangzaam opgevoerd en mondt uit in een hero?sch trompetsignaal. De beweging wordt ronder en er volgt een gedeelte dat het beeld zou kunnen oproepen van galeislaven die in een ritmische cadans aan de riemen trekken. Als de langzamebeweging van het begin weer in gang wordt gezet volgt er een climax die doet denken aan Pini di Roma van de Italiaanse componist Ottorino Respighi. Ceremonial Entry is geschreven ter gelegenheid van het 25ste Frysk Fanfare Festival.
