Although Warum betrubst du dich, mein Herz (What is it troubles thee, my heart) BWV 138 is based on the chorale of the same name, it is nevertheless not regarded as one of Bach's chorale cantatas. In this unusual composition from Bach's first cycle of cantatas, further chorale verses were not paraphrased in the freely-composed sections (as in the chorale cantatas). Instead the chorale occurs in dialog with the recitatives. It assumes the role of the comforter, whilst doubts are expressed through the recitatives. This leads to recitative and chorale being merged into larger movements. In the only aria in the cantata, trust in God finally prevails. The cantata ends with a final chorale verse; in the interludes between the lines, Bach ignites a roaring virtuoso firework display.

Bach's cantata BWV 26 belongs to the Leipzig cycle of chorale cantatas, 1724/25, and it was first performed on 19 November 1724. The underlying 13-vers hymn by Michael Franck provided Bach and his unidentified librettist with an abundance of metaphors and comparisons which, from verse to verse and movement to movement, illustrate the fleeting and transitory nature of earthly life: an impressive musical-poetic exposition of potent baroque pictures of vanity.. The cantata Sei Lob und Ehr dem hochsten Gut (All glory to the Lord of Lords) BWV 117 is one of a small group of Bach's chorale cantatas which use exclusively the text of the chorale, including in the three recitatives and three arias. Only the autograph score of the cantata survives; although this enables an approximate dating to be made (c. 1730), it does not give the occasion for which the cantata was written. The choice of chorale may indicate it was composed for a wedding. Recently it has been suggested that the occasion for its composition was the birthday of the Duke of Weissenfels in 1731; but there is no firm evidence to support either theory. The cantata opens with an extended movement for chorus in which Bach contrasts the concertante orchestra with festive, almost homophonic choral writing. This chorus movement is repeated at the end. A simple chorale movement which comes fourth indicates that the nine-movement cantata was performed in two sections. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3111700.

In 1729 Bach took over the running of the Collegium musicum in Leipzig, founded by Telemann, and continued the tradition of giving concerts at least once a week with this ensemble in Zimmermann's coffee house or, in the summer, in the coffee garden there. The compositions which were probably composed for performance there include Bach's famous Coffee Cantata. The cantata is only superficially about daughter Liesgen's addiction to coffee, in fact it is really about her strict father Schlend rian's educational efforts, which ultimately remain ineffective - but only in Bach's cantata. In Picander's printed libretto it seems as if Schlendrian might prevail, and only in Bach's cantata, which includes two movements setting additional text, is there a twist to the contrary. Might Bach's experiences as a father have come into play here?

The cantata Mein liebster Jesus ist verloren BWV 154 was first performed on 9 January 1724, the 1st Sunday after Epiphany. The structure and extent of the work are unusual: it comprises eight, instead of the usual six movements. With a duration of around 15 minutes, it is a concise work. As well as this, at the beginning of the cantata there is an aria instead of the usual opening chorus. A chorale features at the end and in the third movement. Its brevity and straightforward arias make this cantata suitable for inclusion in any church service, and is easy for amateur ensembles to master. Score available separately - see item CA.3115400.

As in all cantatas for St. Michael the chorale cantata Lord God, we praise thee all of us BWV 130 from 1724 is a magnificent composition. Not only in the opening chorus and the final chorale do the three trumpets and timpani play a role, but the first aria In hell the serpent, hot with hate is even accompanied solely by trumpets, timpani and continuo. The second aria, Thou, of cherubim the master, brings an unexpected contrast in which, besides the tenor and continuo, on a solo flute is heard. The original set of parts were separated from each other in the 19th century and today are scattered throughout the world. For the first time, some of the parts were taken into consideration in preparing this edition. Score available separately - see item CA.3113000.

The new edition of BWV 118 presents the work in the two different instrumental settings that are authenticated through the autograph scores: the earlier version with solely brass instruments, and the later one with mixed instruments. Both versions are printed consecutively. Of particular interest for an authentic performance are two Litui, which are called for in both versions. To this day it has been impossible to determine what instruments are meant here: high horns in B flat? Or trumpets? The work has more unanswered questions for us for example, the occasion for which the first version was written in ca. 1736/37, and the reason why the work was newly orchestrated after 1740.

The cantata dates from Bach's time in Weimar. The instrumental scoring of four violas and basso continuo - in the Leipzig performances enhanced by two recorders doubling viola I and II at the octave - is unique in Bach's cantata oeuvre. It lends a dark, luxurious sound to the four movements which is gently illuminated by the recorders. The work - with its instrumental sinfonia, a short secco recitative and an extended accompagnato recitative (both of which contain arioso inserts), a short soprano aria and a simple closing chorale - makes no great demands on the performing forces. Admirers of text interpretation by means of instrumental figuration will be richly rewarded. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.3101800.

Bach wrote the cantata Du wahrer Gott und Davids Sohn as a test piece in connection with his application for the position of Cantor of St. Thomas. For reasons unknown, Bach considered it necessary to use a cornett and three trombones to support the chorus - possibly this suggests the poor state of the St. Thomas choir after Kuhnau's death.
