In his op. 112 Beethoven sets the two poems by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe Meeresstille (Calm Sea) and Gluckliche Fahrt (Prosperous Voyage). Several sketches reveal that Beethoven had already begun to take an interest in the poems by the end of 1814. The composer conducted the premiere at a benefit concert for the Viennese Citizens' Hospital Fund in 1815. As the publication of this work was long in coming, the dedicatee Goethe received a copy of the score only in May 1822. A few months later Beethoven inquired of him: [...] how lovely would it be to know, if I appropriately united my harmonies with yours. Also enlightenment on what is to be seen as truth, would be dearly appreciated, as I love the latter above all, and never shall be said: Veritas odium parit. The old but commendable Breitkopf material has now been definitively replaced by the new edition based on the Complete Beethoven-Edition, save for the tried and true piano reduction by Carl Reinecke, which boasts more than simply historical merits. Its existence is assured by the revised and simplified form in which it appears in the new piano reduction. It will no doubt long continue being a much appreciated aid at choral rehearsals. In the piano vocal score the articulation and dynamics were adapted to the music text of the Complete Edition. The sun recently began shining from a cloudless sky on Beethoven's Meeres Stille und Gluckliche Fahrt (Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage) after the publication of the piano reduction and choral score which signalize the completion of the performance material based on the new Beethoven Complete Edition. Adagio for Brass is full of beautiful lyrical melodies and the warm harmony and full orchestration give the audience and the band the chance to give their thoughts free reign in a contemplative atmosphere. A wonderfully uplifting work suitable for concerts on all occasions and certainly not one to be missed.

This suite was written in the style of traditional Russian folk music, but does not use existing melodies or themes as its basis. The colourful and varied work contains a number of surprising turns, but also familiar sounds. After the introduction, a kind of Trepak follows ? a fairly quick dance with attractive themes. The second movement (Garovot) is predominantly slow and conveys some melancholy, although, during a more dynamic passage the passion flares up again. Finally, the Troika takes us along in a reindeer sleigh through a grand snowy landscape. This is a wonderful tribute to the music of Eastern Europe in the style of some of the great Russian masters.

Hermann Scherchen, who was the first to take up the cause of the one-hour-plus long, colorfully scored work, came to the conclusion: One of the most heartfelt works of art, full of gentleness and profound sensitivity. Since 1936, when two manuscripts of monastic provenance were discovered, musical scholars have been asking themselves whether the Septem verba is authentic or solely attributable to Sig. Pergolese. It is only thanks to the scholarly comparison of all manuscripts and to the discovery of two new sources which impressively confirm the existence of an active reception of this work in the mid 18th century, that the authorship and transmission can be newly evaluated.

In 1979, Martin produced a set of three quintets, in consideration of Gorky's piece Nighttime Enigma Nostalgia. Each is scored for flute, clarinet, violin, cello, and piano. One role of music is to evoke. Therefore, Nighttime is a nocturne, a night piece suggestive of flickering shadows, perhaps created by firelight. It is a recurrent setting in human existence. The music opens with the scene of twilight calm, gently disturbed with the slight uncertainty about what is around us, what we cannot see. Later, the clarinet takes on a solo role, and the notes bleed like careless paint into the other instruments that quietly sustain them. Next, the flute takes over the role of solo. The piece ends with a repeated cadence of morning light. (From the performance notes.).

I wrote my First Symphony while studying in the United States in 1955, but the work has since undergone two substantial changes. The original four-movement structure changed into a two-movement structure in 1988, with an expansive, Romantic and pathos-laden principal movement followed by a grotesque and ironic scherzo. This version seems to owe something to Dmitri Shostakovich, one of the idols of 1950s Modernism in Finland. Later I found that the structure was out of balance, and in 2003 I added a lyrical slow movement (Poetico) between the two existing ones. In order to preserve the 1950s spirit of the original work, I based the slow movement on solo song written around the same time (third movement from the song cycle Die Liebenden).

The Reformation cantata Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott BWV 80b, published by Carus-Verlag for the first time in a practical performing edition, remained unknown to Bach scholars until well into the 20th century. The evidence of its existence is three fragments of the first folio of Bach's score, which can be dated to the years 1728-1731. By contrast, the long-familiar expanded new version of the cantata with its powerful opening chorus (BWV 80) dates from the 1730s or 1740s. It only survives in a copy of Bach's score, but this allows conclusions to be drawn about the history of the versions; thus, by using the fragments mentioned above, it has been possible to reconstruct the first version. This result is a Bach cantata which is less extensive and in a more concise normal format, with reduced wind instruments. A relaxed, contrapuntal four-part chorale movement with the first and last verses of the Lutheran hymn forms the framework, and the other movements are the same as in the later new version. This simpler cantata is also entirely suitable for celebrating Reformation Day, as Bach did around 1730. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3108000.

ThePetite Messe solennelleis the finest work of Rossini's late years. He composed it between 1863 and 1864 at the age of 71 as a commission for Countess Louise Pillet -Will for the consecration of her private chapel, where the work received its first performance in March 1864. Together with theStabat mater, the mass is one of the composer's mostimportant sacred works. The unusual instrumentation with two pianos and harmonium is entirely in keeping with the Neapolitan keyboard tradition of the 18th century which was cultivated in France in Rossini's day. It forms a distinct contrast to the style of large-scale sacred compositions as written by, for example, Liszt and Bruckner. Rossini explained that he wrote the later orchestral version of the work dating from 1867 out of concern that if he did not do this, other composers might orchestrate the mass too heavily in later arrangements.- Choral score based on the Urtext of the seriesWorks of Gioachino Rossini- Supplements the already existing material available to this work

“Both Marcel Galiègue and Jérôme Naulais studied the Trombone at the Paris Conservatoire. Both musicians have performed in a large number of concerts and recordings and have taken part in many international Master Classes. Their collaboration for Miniature Studies for Tenor Trombone, therefore, makes for a well-informed compilation. With few study books existing specifically for Tenor Trombone, 50 Miniature Studies fills a large gap. In Galiègue and Naulais' book, no tempo or dynamics are given as they are left to the teacher and student's discretion. With all fifty exercises addressing a variety of musical features, 50 Minature Studies for Tenor Trombone makes for an imperative aid to technical progression on the instrument. &rdquo.

Between 1834 and 1847 Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy composed a total of 28 songs for mixed voices, i.e. for two female (soprano and alto) and two male (tenor and bass) voices each. The pieces are arranged so that they can be sung by four individual singers as well as by smaller ensembles or large choirs. The composer had almost two-thirds of these works published by Breitkopf and Hartel in the collections opp. 41, 48 and 59, combining partly already existing and partly newly composed songs into a loose cycle of six songs each. The purpose of such occasional music was clear to him: ... the most natural music of all is when four people go for a walk together, in the forest, or on a boat, and then immediately carry the music with them and in them. The present volume contains all the songs published and unpublished during his lifetime, as well as their versions, which owe their various performance contexts.

As he did before in the often played and commonly appreciated ‘Lord Tullamore’, in which he poetically depicted the landscape and the cultural elements of a small Irish village, in his composition ‘The Road to the West’ Carl Wittrock has sketched pioneer existence in America in a cinematic manner. In ‘The Road to the West’ the composer has tried to capture images of pioneer life during the period dating from 1850 to 1890, the days of the so-called Wild West.In those days, the Wild West used to be the territory west of civilization, the domain of cowboys, trappers, and other fortune hunters. In short, ample ingredients for a captivating story. In the firstscene a lonely adventurer struggles against nature and the elements. After an exciting adventure he passes through ‘the Plains’, where majestic views alternated by colossal mountain ranges display an almost unimaginable beauty. After weeks of isolation civilization is reached again. ‘The Saloon’ is the perfect meeting place here news is exchanged and hilarious scenes regularly take place. After many years of teaching Accordion, Jeanette and Lars Dyremose realised that there was a real need to supplement the existing Accordion literature with works focusing pedagogically on the development of specific skills necessary to master the technical demands of the instrument. This book not only contains some excellent pieces of Accordion repertoire, but also gives information on the methodology behind 'The Life-Giving Bellows Playing', a study they believe to be a prerequisite for artistic Accordion playing.

Franz Schubert wrote the two movements of the Unfinished Symphony in October 1822. The torso has since been posing riddles to posterity, which first learned of the existence of this masterpiece in 1865 through the simultaneous first edition and world-premiere performance. There seems to have been no external reason for its creation. Did Schubert really consider the piece only as an experiment that did not warrant any continuation? It should be noted, however, that Schubert sketched the Scherzo up to the beginning of the Trio, and even fully orchestrated nine measures of this movement.

Man that is born of woman hath but a short time to live is one of the central biblical texts dealing with the transitoriness of human existence. Leopold Hofmann, Kapellmeister at St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna from 1772 to 1793, where W. A. Mozart was his church music assistant, also set this strongly expressive text. Hofmann's setting, in C minor, offers an austere harmony, characterized by suspensions in a homophonic, through-composed four-part vocal setting (soloists or SATB choir), reinforced only by two trombones and organ continuo. Four concise instrumental transitional passages between the individual verses relieve the pathos laden Viennese church style of this composition. With its tragic air, in some passages it closely resembles Mozart's Requiem K. 626. For this first edition, the two trombone parts are available both in the original clef and in alto clef. The figured bass has been realized so that the piece can also be performed without trombones, with only organ accompaniment. For a performance this piece could easily be combined with the Salve Regina by Pietro Cassati (Carus 27.703) from the Vienna series. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.2770500.
