A collection of nine festive Christmas carol arrangements regularly used by the Washington Chorus and at Trinity Church, on Wall Street in New York City. From the ebullient jubilation of Joy to the World and Angels We Have Heard on High to the expansive and sweet Un Flambeau and Silent Night, this new collection presents the best of Julian Wachner's stunning and varied redressing of these traditional tunes. Intended for full audience participation with the support of choir, organ, brass, and percussion, all of the arrangements in this collection also serve the needs of more modest presentations with the included keyboard reductions. As a confirmed Mozartian it is natural that Müller's concertos for flute and orchestra should follow the classical pattern, and the E minor work published here for the first time since 1801 is an attractive and virtuoso piece in the less usual minor tonality. It is edited by Nikolai Jaeger and Christopher Hogwood with a useful introduction including points of performance practice drawn from Müller’s flute tutor. A keyboard reduction of the orchestral part is also available.

A pastorella (the Latin pastores means shepherds) had evolved during the eighteenth century as a work to be incorporated into midnight Mass that dramatised the role of the sheperds in the Nativity story, recounting their wonder at receiving the news of the holy birth in their fields from the angel and their arrival at the stable with gifts for the baby Jesus. It was a popular genre for 150 years in the eastern parts of the Austro-Hungarian empire. The horn-call motifs of the village herdsman, used to round up his cattle in the mornings, were frequently part of the composition: so indeed was the instrument itself, in order to enhance the realism of the scene.

Developing SATB choirs will delight in singing this original work set to the most musical of words, “Alleluia.†While the easy piano accompaniment is supportive throughout, it leaves space for the choir to sing “a cappella†style, one brief phrase at a time. Not only is this an excellent teaching piece, but the simple melodic and harmonic ideas are beautifully developed, making it a highly rewarding singing and listening experience for everyone.

Wolff’s Concerto in C major for flute, strings and basso continuo has the customary three movements (Allegro Moderato, Affettuoso, Allegro), all of which are extended in form and poetic in expression, often using striking dynamic contrasts and orchestral unison writing in a way that prefigures the Sturm und Drang of the 1760s. The third movement is a true ‘applause finale’, putting the soloist through some challenging technical hoops.

In this arrangement of the beloved African-American Spiritual, Elizabeth Campbell has employed the call and response tradition in both the choral writing and the use of a soprano soloist. The unobtrusive accompaniment quietly supports the choir as it shimmers above in opulent harmonies.
