Melody and counterpoint, accompanied by a peaceful harmony, play a kind of question and answer game in this short composition. The piece is written in a rather ABA form, with the perusiion complementing the whole very effectively.

Sonnets is a collection of miniatures for cello and piano. To me, these micro-pieces are sonnets not in the rigorously formalized Elizabethan or Petrarchan senses of the word. Rather, they grow from the term's older, freer roots in the Italian word sonetto, meaning little song or little sound. The work was commissioned by the Schwetzingen Mozart Festival at the suggestion of clarinetist Nikolaus Friedrich who wished to enrich the rather meagre repertoire for basset clarinet. This edition contains the part of this instrument, much appreciated by Mozart, arranged for modern B-flat clarinet. As the title suggests, audible tonal and motivic analogies have a formative effect in this cycle, the parts of which the composer regards as five “sound poems, interconnected in some ways,†and which also refers motivically to other works by Höller. At the centre is a slow and expressive movement in the character of a lament, which is linked by the seven-tone motto A-B flat-E flat-C-B-E-D (German: a-b-es-c-h-e-d (= “Abschiedâ€, meaning “farewellâ€)) to the surrounding lively movements, some of which seem deliberately improvisatory. The strings, although accompanying, are hardly less virtuoso than the solo wind instrument, especially in the rapid finale.

Known professionally as Hauschka, composer Volker Bertelmann has catapulted himself into the top tier of instrumental composers. This is proven, not least, by the Oscar nomination which he received for his soundtrack to the 2016 film Lion. In his latest album A Different Forest, released on 8 February 2019 at Sony Classical, Hauschka takes the forest as a contrast to the urban life. The names of the pieces, such as 'Talking To My Father', testify equally that those natural experiences are metaphorical of the important things in life. For this album Hauschka renounces entirely his prepared Piano. The existential questions which he musically poses, however, do not lose their intensity, but rather, without the alienation by electronic elements, gain urgency. In addition to the 13 LP tracks, this songbook for Piano also contains three exclusive arrangements of previously unreleased songs: 'Collecting Stones', 'Loosing Directions' and 'Misty Day'.

Shchedrin's oeuvre spans nearly every musical genre, and it is hardly surprising that an output of such versatility contains some rather remarkable instrumental combinations, for example Music from afar for 2 bass recorders, or Balalaika for a solo violin playing pizzicato throughout. This predilection for the unusual leads the composer in Parabola concertante with its basically subdued and contemplative mood to add a charcteristic counterpoint by contrasting the accompanying string orchestra with timpani. CONCERTINO FOR BASSOON, Opus 171 was commissioned by Dr. Mark Rogers and was premiered in April 2023 by the University of Kansas Wind Ensemble, Dr. Paul Popiel conductor, with Eric Stomberg playing bassoon. The work is in one movement. Like so many famous works for bassoon, it is based in F major. The piece is in a modified five-part rondo form, with the slow middle portion in Bb serving as the B theme. Rather jolly in nature, the work is intended to show off not only the happy nature of the bassoon, but also to demonstrate its expressive lyricism and dazzling technique.
