As in all cantatas for St. Michael the chorale cantata Lord God, we praise thee all of us BWV 130 from 1724 is a magnificent composition. Not only in the opening chorus and the final chorale do the three trumpets and timpani play a role, but the first aria In hell the serpent, hot with hate is even accompanied solely by trumpets, timpani and continuo. The second aria, Thou, of cherubim the master, brings an unexpected contrast in which, besides the tenor and continuo, on a solo flute is heard. The original set of parts were separated from each other in the 19th century and today are scattered throughout the world. For the first time, some of the parts were taken into consideration in preparing this edition. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.3113000.

This SSAATTBB a cappella setting of All Praise to Thee brings innovative textures and harmonic sonorities to the much-loved tune Tallis Canon. An opening statement of the tune is followed by SATB parts employing traditional canonic treatment, which then expands to 8 parts with sustained chords providing a new textural backdrop for the re-appearance of the hymn tune in augmented form.

Although Warum betrubst du dich, mein Herz (What is it troubles thee, my heart) BWV 138 is based on the chorale of the same name, it is nevertheless not regarded as one of Bach's chorale cantatas. In this unusual composition from Bach's first cycle of cantatas, further chorale verses were not paraphrased in the freely-composed sections (as in the chorale cantatas). Instead the chorale occurs in dialog with the recitatives. It assumes the role of the comforter, whilst doubts are expressed through the recitatives. This leads to recitative and chorale being merged into larger movements. In the only aria in the cantata, trust in God finally prevails. The cantata ends with a final chorale verse; in the interludes between the lines, Bach ignites a roaring virtuoso firework display.

The beginning of Cantata no. 49 (I go and search for thee with yearning) may also be the most well-known part of this work: in the introductory sinfonia for organ and orchestra Bach refers back to the final movement of a lost concerto with concertante melody instrument which he later reworked into the Harpsichord Concerto in E major BWV 1053. The cantata, conceived as a composition in dialogue between the faithful soul (soprano) and Jesus (bass), is characterized by the expressiveness of the love poetry from the biblical Song of Songs, which finds its lyrical expression especially in the virtuosity and charm of its instrumentation - a masterpiece in the Bachian art of characterization. The cantata Nach dir, Herr, verlanget mich (O my Lord, I long for thee) BWV 150 is one of the earliest cantatas from Bach's Muhlhausen period. Its authenticity was long disputed, partly because of the stylistic characteristics of this early work, but also because the cantata only survives in sources dating from the period after Bach's death. However, in recent years a hidden dedication to Conrad Meckbach, a member of the Muhlhausen town council and patron of Bach, has been deciphered: the initial letters of the free poetry reveal the acrostic Doctor Conrad Meckbach (in the 18th century spelling), revealing a link to the city of Muhlhausen and almost certainly confirming Bach's authorship of the cantata. The occasion of the composition of the work is still unknown. The small instrumental scoring for just two violins, bassoon, and continuo, plus the fact that only the soprano is given a solo movement, suggest a performance with modest resources. I Shall Love But Thee is an occasional work in the literal sense of the word, since it was originally written on the occasion of thecomposer's youngest son's wedding. The texts, by William Shakespeare, inspired Jan Van der Roost to compose profound and appealing music, largely in the style of Henry Purcell (in the first part) and Georg Friedrich Handel (in the second part)although no literalquotations have been used. The rather rare combination of soprano and concert band makes this piece a unique addition to the repertoire!
