Waltz for Betz (1999) is, as one might assume, a waltz dedicated to someone named Betz. It is a gentle, passionate ballad--Erik Satie by way of Henry Mancini--originally composed for solo piano as a musical Valentine's Day card. Waltz for Betz now exists in multiple arrangements for virtually every instrument: with piano accompaniment; with string quartet or string quintet accompaniment; and with string orchestra accompaniment. In 2006, it was released in its version for viola and string orchestra by the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra on the ABC Classics label in Australia, where it continues to enjoy frequent radio play. In 2009, violist Michelle LaCourse recorded Waltz for Betz on her CD, Chocolates--Music for Viola and Piano by James Grant, on the MSR Classics label. In 2011, it was recorded by Tim Buzbee in its version for tuba and piano and released on Albany Records. And in 2012, clarinetist William Helmers released Waltz for Betz in a version for clarinet and string quintet, on his Potenza Records release, High Autumn.

Freedom's Sword tells the tale of battle and reconciliation between two lands, deriving themes from the well-known Scottish song Ca' the yowes. Horn calls and pounding drums set the tone for the battle scenes while a dreamy alto saxophone solo creates an air of optimism.

This work was originally commissioned by Nigel Boddice for the West Lothian Schools Brass Band to play at the European Youth Brass Band Championships in 1997 entitled Devolution to celebrate the setting up of the new Scottish Parliament. It appears in this revised version for Concert Band with the title Freedom's Sword. The opening section recalls days gone by when the Scots and English fought many a battle. The themes are derived from the well-known haunting song Ca' the yowes. The horn calls and off-stage percussion sound of a distant battle and it gradually comes closer. The centre section creates a mood of reconciliation with a dreamy Alto Saxophone solo. The last section now looks ahead with optimism and various bright dance themes appear based on traditional Scottish reel tunes, one of which is a two-part vocal scat section The piece then heads for its conclusion including a full statement of the main theme.

Cherry Classics Music and Jeff Reynolds are thrilled to introduce for the first time in print an excellent work for unaccompanied Bass Trombone from the 1960's by the late American composer Gregory Kosteck. Here is what Jeff Reynolds says about the Kosteck - Concert Music for Bass Trombone - unaccompanied: When I was a student, my teacher, Roger Bobo handed me the 1963 Kosteck manuscript (originally written for tuba when they both lived in Amsterdam) to have a look for my senior recital. He said it was not right for him but I might find it worthy. Worthy it was, and I went on to play it on my recital and also as the solo piece for my audition for the bass trombone chair with the L.A. Philharmonic. After playing it on the audition, conductor Zubin Mehta asked, Did you miss any notes? My response was, No. Some years later I recorded the piece on an album called The Big Trombone for Crystal Records. Also available on iTunes. The music of about 5 1/2 minutes in length is contemporary sounding in four sections: Lyrical - Scherzando - Cadenza - Lyrical and is appropriate for advanced performers. The range goes from a pedal F up to a high G above middle C. Friedhelm Rentzsch, long a cellist in the Dresden Philharmonic, set Psalm 130, whose character of penitence is especially impressive here, through the reduction of the musical forces to a solo alto with orchestral accompaniment, and this in a most unique, urgent manner. Through the addition of a sombre text by Erich Arendt the subective manner of the song is placed in a worldly context encompassing all periods of time.
