In 1878, on a commission from his publisher, Anton n Dvorák wrote a series of eight Slavonic dances. Modelled on Johannes Brahmsâ?? famous Hungarian Dances, although in contrast to Brahmsâ?? work, Dvorák used no original melodies. Wil van der Beek has arranged No. 7, a brisk 2/4 dance, as well as No. 8, a passionate, exuberant furiant in 3/4.

When AntonÃn Dvorák started composing his String Quartet No. 10 in late 1878, none of his quartets had yet been performed. However this new work, deliberately cast in the “Slavonic†style, quickly achieved international renown and has remained among one of the most popular string quartets by Dvorák.The authoritative Dvorák scholar Hartmut Schick has consulted all accessible sources, most notably the printed score published by Simrock and the autograph. Now, after many decades, a definitive Urtext edition of this major work can be presented. In comparison to the old Supraphon edition of 1955, the new publication includes a detailed Critical Commentary (Eng) as well as edited early versions of the middle movements in the appendix. A detailed Foreword (Ger/Cz/Eng) by the editor is also contained.

Antonín Dvorák wrote his 9th Symphony From the New World while he was the director of the National Conservatory of Music of America. He was directly influenced by Harry T. Burleigh, a student at the National Conservatory at the time. The musical theme from the Largo movement was adapted into the spiritual-like “Goin' Home” by Dvorák pupil William Arms Fisher. This beautiful melody along with the powerful lyrics are here set in an African American gospel style, including a quote from the spiritual “Deep River.&rdquo.

The discovery of a lost source to AntonÃn Dvorák's â??Nocturneâ? in B major op. 40 provides new insights into the genesis of the composition and the composer's intended final form of this lyrical little piece for string orchestra. The musical material of what was later to be named â??Nocturneâ? was initially elaborated in the String Quartet in E minor; subsequently it was used in the original version of the String Quintet in G major as its second movement. However Dvorák then extracted it again, expanding and editing it afresh. The final result was the â??Nocturneâ? for string orchestra (two violins, viola, violoncello, double bass). The first edition was published by Bote and Bock in 1883.The authorized second copy of the work that had served as a template for the first printing was discovered by the editor Jonáš Hájek in a privately owned collection. This enabled him to resolve the several ambiguities caused by the existence of multiple versions and to unveil the authentic â??Nocturneâ?.

From the composer: Evensong was composed at the request of my friend David Wick, principal hornist of the Virginia Symphony Orchestra. He asked that I compose a recital piece for him to play with the orchestra's music director, JoAnn Falletta, who is also a virtuoso guitarist. The only stipulation he made was that the work include fragments of one of his favorite melodies, “Lasst mich alleâ€, from Four Songs, Op. 82, by AntonÃn Dvorák. The melody is also quoted in the Adagio movement of DvorákÂ’s Cello Concerto in B Minor, Op. 104, B. 191. The music is absolute in nature and cast in the form of a single movement fantasy based loosely on DvorákÂ’s melody, which is stated at the outset and at the conclusion.
