Kyle Johnson has taken the traditional canon “When Jesus Wept†and creatively deconstructed it. We never hear more than two parts in canon with each other at the same time. Then he introduces a new counter-melody in the other parts and fills out the harmonies in other ways. While the words can be lost in the traditional four-part canon, the overall effect of Johnson’s approach is to create a moving meditation on the text. Easily accessible and highly recommended for small SATB choirs, but any size group will appreciate the artistry of this piece.

Tehillim to Yahweh is a very short paraphrase of part of Psalm 150, and in English is translated to Psalms to the Lord. It is meant to be of an easy level for an average church choir and is intended to be used as an introit in the divine worship service. There is a declamatory opening followed by a short passage of canonical entrances; the end of the work employs a small use of chromaticism. This best-selling anthem, now available for both SATB and Two-part choirs, by Becki Slagle Mayo explores the Advent themes of hope, peace, joy, and love promised by the prophecies of the coming Savior. The choral writing features many canonical moments as well as beautifully crafted homophonic sections, and the optional flute adds the perfect musical color to this meaningful piece.

The Christmas miracle is canonically admired in this six-part setting by Javier Busto. The soprano leads, the other voices follow with no offset. The three-part hallelujah, which is sung first by the women and then by the men and ends tutti in the forte, leads to a jubilant conclusion.

Keith Kalemba has intelligently arranged this Irish Christmas carol for four-part chorus with an appealing instrumental duo of flute and viola. We begin with an introduction reminiscent of medieval instrumental performance--a string drone under the ornamented melodic tune on the flute. The soprano melody on the first verse is complemented by the tenor line in a clever, highly effective canon at the eighth note. The instruments reappear as a musical conclusion for each stanza and an interlude introduces verse 3 for soprano and alto voices in canon. Verse 4, for a cappella men's voices, musically builds to the final verse for full four-part chorus and instruments. This well designed arrangement will prove to be a worthy challenge for your seasonal choral library. A violin part may be purchased to substitute for viola (e05842).

Expressive singing in needed in this arrangement of Grieg's poignant 'Homesickness' paired with the introspective text of William McComb's, 'Chief of Sinners Though I Be.' The voices are often presented in pairs and sometimes treated canonically. The sparse piano accompaniment has typical Grieg harmonies. A reflective and beautiful piece.

Bach composed the cantata O God, from heaven look on us BWV 2 for the 2nd Trinity Sunday 1724 as the second cantata of the annual cycle of chorale cantatas. It is based on Martin Luther's rewriting of Psalm 112. The opening movement is one of a group of cantata opening movements which are not concertante but kept entirely in the motet style, with the instruments serving only to reinforce the singers. The archaic character of this movement is heightened by the addition of a trombone quartet. The concertante style is all the more significant in the first aria for contralto, solo violin and continuo. The first secco recitative represents a special feature: two fragments of the chorale are woven as arioso into the recitative, both in text and melody; futhermore, they are also taken up canonically by the continuo. Haydn's Missa Sancti Joannis Nepomuceni, dated 21 May 1772, is dedicated to the Bohemian martyr and patron Saint of bridges, Johannes Nepomuk (ca. 1340-1393, canonized in 1729). Despite the addition of woodwinds and brass to the three-part string section, the Mass is in a comparatively simple, compact form as was expressly required by Count Hieronymus Colloredo, Haydn's second employer in Salzburg. Even in the final sections of the Gloria and Credo Haydn forgoes not only vocal virtuosity, but also the polyphonic artifices which traditionally characterize these passages in the Mass. Like the Missa Sancti Amandi (1776), the Nepomuk Mass does not employ vocal soloists. Score available separately - see item CA.5031400.

The composer set the pensive, lamenting poem by Andreas Gryphius to music as a demanding choral work. The text is musically reinterpreted by means of varied tone colours and through an emphatic interpretation of the words. Initially homophonic, the texture of the setting becomes polyphonic over the course of the piece; the number of parts varies between four and nineteen canonically treated parts. Solo passages round off the 'Karfreitags-Sonett' [Good Friday Sonnet] which was commissioned by the Bavarian Radio and premiered in Nuremberg in 1986.

The Complete Vocal Works Johann Pachelbel is known today as a composer of organ music and of a world-famous instrumental canon which frequently features in concert programmes and recording catalogues. However, the same can be said of only a few of his vocal compositions. At most, the motets appear occasionally in church music repertoire. Pachelbelâ??s arias, vocal concerti and large-scale Magnificats have received little attention up to now. Church musicians and musicologists have long wished for a critical edition of these important works, which survive in Pachelbelâ??s manuscript and were largely composed in his main places of work, Erfurt and Nuremberg . As always with such ventures, new discoveries are to be expected regarding the body of works, source material and the context of the works. This concerns not only beautiful music, but rather a deepening of our understanding of Pachelbel as a key figure between southern and central German traditions, and the recognition of an oeuvre which has all too often been pushed into the shadows by the mighty Bach. The Critical Edition The edition aims to make available all of Johann Pachelbelâ??s surviving vocal works in the best possible form. It is edited by the Institut für Musikwissenschaft at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg and the Institut für Kirchenmusik at the Kunstuniversität Graz. Two volumes per year are planned. As a chronological order is not possible in many cases, the individual works have been arranged according to scoring within their groups. Fragments and works where Johann Pachelbelâ??s authorship is doubtful appear at the end of the respective group. Each volume includes an introduction (Ger/Eng) and a Critical Commentary (Ger). Format 25.5 x 32.5 cm; cloth-bound

To celebrate 25 years of excellence and promotion of new concert works, the New York Virtuoso Singers commissioned 25 contemporary composers for 25 new choral works, all of which now appear on their recording, 25 X 25: Twenty-Five Premieres for Twenty-Five Years. Among the 25 is Richard Wernick's The Devil's Game. Here, Wernick uses The Devil's Verse, a Latin palindrome that still puzzles us today as to its meaning, and appropriately embraces repetitive use of the verse in a musical palindrome of his own.The text is a palindrome (in girum imus nocte et consumimur igni), a rather mysterious one called The Devil’s Verse. Its origin is vague (probably Roman, but possibly Medieval) and it does not surrender its meaning easily; many scholars have fussed over it. It is a riddle as well as a palindrome, in other words a puzzle within a puzzle. My preferred translation, without going into the niceties of Latin grammar, is “We enter the circle at night and are consumed by fire.â€This music is also a palindrome, the outer parts of which are homophonic, while the turning around point in the center (where the basses enter for the first time) is a brief double canon.

The striking choral writing will instantly touch you in this succinct and moving interpretation of Virga Jesse Floruit (The rod of Jesse has blossomed) by Kentucky composer Brett Ballard. The haunting opening choral statement in E-minor seamlessly leads to an unmetered unison chant section in G mixolydian mode. An ingenious two-subject canon follows in a musical dialogue between the higher voices and the lower voices in B-flat minor. The two choral closing statements bring us back to the original tonality and musically paint the phrase ima summis . . . (reconciling in himself the lowest with the highest). The work concludes as calmly as it began. Quite a journey in thirty measures!

This contemporary winter choral brings a fresh approach to the genre. A lyrical minor-key verse, which becomes a canon the second time, sharply contrasts with the bright, uplifting chorus. Refreshing. Accompaniment included on PianoTrax 1 CD (00-31028).
