The pieces contained in the present volume provide a link between the easy, dance-like movements contained in the Anna Magdalena Bach Book and the two-part inventions. The text corresponds very largely to that of the original source; missing dynamic and tempo markings must be supplied by the player himself in accordance with the character of each piece. The training of the student's feeling for style must begin here, his technical capabilities being taken into account. The occasionally simplified ornaments can also be treated in this manner. The fingerings are intended as suggestions for small hands; they must, of course, be adapted to the particular player's hands, taking tempo and phrasing into consideration. The editor has attempted to solve the problems of phrasing and articulation by means of his own suggestions, but without cluttering the text too much. Various alternative solutions (as indicated in no. 3) are possible, and should - insofar as they make musical sense- be realized in practice. By independently choosing a phrasing and writing it into the music himself, the student improves his unterstanding of the polyphonic structure and the form. Heinz Walter, Salzburg, Spring 1977.

Within this work Heller already establishes herself as a composer who possesses and demonstrates a clear sense of form, as well as a feel for creating arcs of tension and contrasts. The work is pianistically challenging, even though it fits the hands well. It requires, in particular, careful listening with regard to the structures and harmonic sequences. This thoroughly entertaining piece of music is set to benefit both up-and-coming musicians and concert pianists, and deserves to be included in the standard repertoire. The piano suite composed in 1956 by the 20 year-old Barbara Heller is a major accomplishment. Within this work Heller already establishes herself as a composer who possesses and demonstrates a clear sense of form, as well as a feel for creating arcs of tension and contrasts. Stylistically, the work belongs to the moderate modernist trend, which arose sometime after Hindemith. However, this piano suite has charms of its own; at times it is the emphatic shaping of phrases, which bring about moments of dissonance and occasionally, it is the harsh and unwilling gestures. The charm of this piece also lies within its deep-rooted earnestness and its frequent seasoning of humour.

Most people consider improvisation to be an essential element of Jazz, and musicians occasionally use the word 'Jazz' as a synonym for improvisation. To improvise is to compose and perform simultaneously. A great deal of improvised music is spontaneous, unrehearsed, not written down beforehand. This particular book will contain exercises that have been written and formalized to determine the degrees of the scales, 1. 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7. We will study carefully the subdivision of every scale according to two tetrachords. The first one is 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and the second is 3, 4, 5, 6, 7. We will also play arpeggios of all kinds to extend the scale to its maximum degree. This book will explain to the student how to start a phrase of improvisation from any starting point of the scale (major, dominant, minor, diminished, etc.) Any individual or class using this book should listen to as much jazz, recorded and live, as possible.
