The general inspiration for the music was an idea of Durham, garnered from two or three short visits and a reading of a short history - so a sort of Durham of the mind, a stylized Durham; 'my' Durham, if you will, imagined into music. However, the defininginspiration for the piece was the Cathedral. My first visit to Durham in 2001 saw me standing open-mouthed on Palace Green, and then in silent awe as I walked into that formidable magnificence inside. Most of the themes came from the days immediately following my first experience of this extraordinary, inspiring building. The feeling that the very stones and pillars themselves are imbued with centuries of prayer, withpeople's joy, grief, despair, even anger; gratitude and hope. As the tunes and chords and sounds started to organize themselves in my mind and onto manuscript paper, I realized that I was writing a sort of day in the life of Durham, and that the Cathedral wouldbe its beginning, would be in its middle, and would be at its ending. The piece consists of six 'pictures' arranged into three parts - the morning, afternoon and evening of this imaginary Durham city. Jon Lord, 2017.

This Compatible String Ensembles collection of Christmas Trios will set the mood in any environment. This Series is Available for:Violin BF142Viola BF143Cello BF144Bass BF145.The 22 Christmas tunes contained in this collection have been carefully arranged for any combination of string trio. The most standard instrumentation for voicing is violin, viola, and cello. However, three of the same instruments work well as do other groupings, given that the higher-pitched instrument plays the higher part. This three-part format follows a standard order: part 1 is melody, part 2 is harmony, and part 3 is a traditional bass line. Optional 8va markings are sometimes given to help the voicings sound better. The selections have been arranged in alphabetic order. The melodies, both sacred and secular, cover many centuries and originate in Western Europe and the United States. Each work is in the public domain and was selected for both its quality and musical interest.Arranged specifically for a chamber setting, the trios may be performed in a variety of venues from church services to holiday gatherings. Some repeats are marked in the music, but any selection may be repeated for the appropriate amount of music needed. Bowings have been added as suggestions, and some fingerings have been added to show the direction of shifts beyond first position.—Todd ParrishOrchestra Editor, Carl Fischer MusicJune 2021.

I was tempted to call the piece Throw Back because it consciously employs rhythmic and harmonic approaches characteristic of the earlier part of the twentieth century, much of which plays a part in forging my musical personality. Going along with the impetus, I have paid homage by subtly interpolating stylistic or actual references to such unexpected bedfellows as Scriabin, Ravel, Debussy, Piston, Roussel, and Ysaye. I hope I will be musically forgiven. In one continuous movement, there are three definite internal sections: Presto-Largo-Allegro. The first section opens with a very soft percussion cadenza. If the acoustics allow it, the player will use sponge pottery mallets (sponge-headed mallets employed to smooth the interior of a pot as it is being spin-dried). No matter how hard the percussionist strikes the drums, the dynamic cannot go above pp (pianissimo). This cadenza serves as a basis for the first movement. The elements of the cadenza are taken by the orchestra to make the first major statement, similar to the classical concerto; but rather than making a restatement, the soloists, when they come in, begin with variational ideas. The second section is given over to the soloists, and is lyrical. The third section begins with an alternation between strict rhythmic pulsation and free-sounding timbres, as if reluctant to leave the second section behind. The rhythmic aspect takes over more and more as the piece progresses toward its conclusion. Double Play was commissioned by the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra with financial assistance from the Northwest Area Foundation. It received its premiere on January 7, 1983, in St. Paul, with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra; Pinchas Zukerman, violinist; Marc Neikrug, piano; and the composer conducting.

This work was commissioned by the Schubert Ensemble, and first performed by them on 5th July 1992 as part of the Cheltenham International Festival. The words I broke off a golden branch come from a Croatian folksong, which is very obliquely referred to in the second of the work's two movements. Scored for Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass and Piano. Duration: c.15 minutes.
