Since atomic-bomb survivors are aging today, the number of people who can tell about their experience of the atomic bombing is getting fewer. Although the Peace Memorial Ceremony is held every year on Atomic Bomb Day in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, it is hard not to feel that the memory of wartime is beginning to fade among people. Through the word 'non erodes' in the title, I wanted to express my idea that the memory of the atomic bomb has not weakened yet, and should not fade forever. - Tomiko Kohjiba.

The Ragtimes & Habaneras were commissioned by the Grimethorpe Colliery Band, one of the most famous Brass Bands in Great Britain. Individual scenes and short pieces of incidental music in typical American dance rhythms have been taken from the Opera 'La Cubana', written shortly before, and arranged and combined in a kind of suite. It is an effective, happy work, full of contrasts and allusions to other music. It is suitable for competent ensembles.

The word ‘tsunami’ is of Japanese origin. When you look it up in a dictionary, you will find that it means ‘a great sea wave produced by submarine earth movement or volcanic eruption’. A megatsunami is the superlative of this awesome expressionof power that nature can create, and has catastrophic consequences. When Carl Wittrock completed this composition not many such big earth movements had occurred, but since then we have become all too familiar with the disastrousconsequences which a tsunami may have. On the 26th of December 2004 a heavy seaquake took place near the Indonesian island of Sumatra. Tidal waves 10 meters in height ravaged the coastal regions of many countries for miles around. The tsunamitook the lives of thousands of people and destroyed many villages and towns. There are more areas which run the risk of being struck by a tsunami, such as the island of La Palma, one of the Canary Islands. This island is based on oceaniccrust at a fracture zone and as such is one of nature’s time bombs. The consequences of a natural calamity like a megatsunami are immense. In the case of La Palma, the tidal wave will move in the direction of South America, where it may reach 50km inland, destroying everything on its way. In his composition Wittrock describes an ordinary day which will have an unexpected ending. Right from the beginning there seems to be something in the air, the music creating an oppressiveatmosphere of impending disaster. Themes are interrupted, broken off suddenly, followed by silence, suggesting the calm before the storm. Suddenly a short climax (glissandi in the trombone part) indicates the seaquake, and the megatsunami isa fact. Hereafter follows a turbulent passage symbolising the huge rolling waves. After nature’s force has spent itself, resignation sets in and the composition ends with a majestic ode to nature. Gobelin Music Publications.

This work was originally written for brass band (see there). At the composer's request, his former pupil Marcel Wengler wrote an arrangement for Symphonie wind band, which is equal to the original in ever-yway. Here Henze and Wengler have given wind players a work which successfully combines a popular style and to some extent extremely witty elements with the resources of new music. It is excellent concert music for advanced and Professional orchestras.Hans Werner Henze belongs to a small circle of internationally known cornposers of serious contemporary music. In his operas, symphonies, and music for ensembles and chamber music groups, as well as in his contributions to music for amateurs, there are works with a distinctive sense of form, delicate tonality and rhythmic variety which nonetheless never lose sight of that dimension of humanity.Marcel Wengler (born 1946) is now a freelance composer. With some trepidation, Talma wrote her own libretto for the 1976 chamber opera Have You Heard? Do You Know?, a work about the Cold War and the desire for utopias (when the bomb drops, where would you run to?). For Talma, who lived a great part of her life in the hustle-bustle of Manhattan, this opera may have been reflective of her joy in spending time at the peaceful woods of the MacDowell Colony. While she referred to the opera as amusing, it may well have been autobiographical to a large extent.
