There is a lot to be said for the argument that the oratorio Wacht! Euch zum Streit gefasset macht, which has been handed down anonymously, is actually the only surviving Abendmusik from Dieterich Buxtehude and that he composed this work, also known as Das Jungste Gericht, for St. Mary's Church in Lubeck, where it was probably performed around 1683. For the first time this full-length work, with its richly contrasting style and dramatic action, is made accessible for performance in its original form. Ton Koopman reconstructed the parts which were missing from the source. Score available separately - see item CA.3601900.

Bach composed the cantata Jesus schlaft, was soll ich hoffen [Jesus sleeps, what hope have I] BWV 81 for the fourth Epiphany Sunday, 1724. The cantata is structured as a little drama: In the beginning, fear prevails. The seas rage and Jesus is asleep. The threateningly foaming waves are vividly depicted in the soughing string accompaniment of the tenor aria. Jesus's words Ihr Kleinglaubigen, warum seid ihr so furchtsam? [You of little faith, why are you so fearful?] are set as a bass arioso at the center of the cantata; they provide the turning point. In the subsequent bass aria, the towering seas are silenced. A recitative - Wohl mir [Well for me] - leads into the closing chorale with its certainty Unter deinen Schirmen bin ich vor den Sturmen aller Feinde frei [Under Your protection I am spared the tempests of my enemies]. The Hochzeitskantate (Wedding Cantata) BWV 195 was performed by Bach from around 1730 at various wedding celebrations in different forms, and was evidently also lent out for performances further afield. The only surviving version of the work dates from the last years of Bach's life. The opulently-scored first part begins and ends with grand choral movements, and Bach scored both parts for soloists and for chorus. At the centre of the cantata is an exceptionally sensitive bass aria, probably one of Bach's most modern vocal compositions of all. A chorale movement (Nun danket all and bringet Ehr/ Now thank we all and offer praise) with obbligato horns concludes the cantata as the second part after the consummation.

Biber's Requiem in F minor is amongst the most impressive settings of the Requiem Mass of the 17th century. The exact reason for the composition of the Requiem, which can be dated to 1692, is not known. The dark key color of F minor is emphasized by the instrumental scoring for two violins, three violas, basso continuo and three trombones (colla parte with the chorus). The vivid language of the Requiem text offered Biber a wealth of possibilities for expressive, musical interpretation. The intensity of the musical language used to portray lamenting and mourning is impressive. In the course of publication of the Biber Requiem, surprisingly the primary source, which until now had been thought to be missing, resurfaced and the edition could be prepared based on this astonishing discovery. This is a work of mid-level difficulty for a choir and with the clear disposition of the string parts it is well suited for performance by amateur choirs. Henry du Mont was a musician at the court of the French King Louis XIV. The present work was probably performed in 1663 in the presence of the king, who also ensured that it was printed in 1686. The piece is a Grant Motet, a motet for double-choir that, next to the mass, formed an important class of French church music at that time. Score available separately - see item CA.2100500.

With the edition of the Christmas Oratorio within the framework of the Stuttgart Bach Editions, Carus presents a scholarly edition for practical performance. The basis for this publication are Bach's autograph score and the original parts. The conducting score contains an appendix with a concise Critical Report which provides information about the sources and their readings; when necessary, the latter are discussed in more detail, especially with regard to how the editor arrived at solutions for questions of articulation which differ from those found in previous editions. The representative, clothbound volume is supplemented by a study score as well as a choral score, a vocal score and complete orchestral material. In the orchestral material short excerpts containing the conclusions of the secco recitatives are rendered with cue notes in separate vocal systems printed above the score where the instrumentalists pause, thus enabling them make their entrances in the movements which follow these recitatives. This work is also available in carus music, the choir app! Score and parts available separately - see item CA.3124800.

The Easter concerto Surrexit pastor bonus, for large forces, is based on a Latin responsory for Easter. The work is extant only in handwritten form, and nothing is known regarding the date of composition, although the polychoral design, with two ad libitum tutti choirs (Capellchore) could indicate a temporal proximity to the Psalms of David 1619. On the other hand, the freer treatment of the instruments in particular suggests the Symphoniae sacrae and especially - given the work's large instrumentation - the third part, dated 1650. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.2046900.
