Music for two pianos is among the most satisfying of collaborative genres, and Rhian Samuel has caught its spirit of verve and playfulness in her new Serenade Duo. Repartee between the pianists drives this effervescent score from mysterious beginnings, in which the serenade alternates with fleet, toccata-like material, through crosstalk growing ever more boisterous until the serenade itself is heard in a singing statement 'molto rubato'. An up-tempo conclusion in a flurry of scales returns enigmatically to the mood of the opening. Serenade Duo is of just over five minutes' duration, and was premiered by Dimitris Barydis and Petros Moschos on 13 February 2005 at the Purcell Room.

Johannes Brahms was long reluctant to compete with Beethoven in the field of symphonic music. With his D-major Serenade in six movements, the young composer deliberately chose a genre that had had its golden era in the 18th century, thus before Beethoven. Initially, he even conceived the Serenade for a smaller setting, but decided on a full orchestra in 1860. But even then, it was slow in becoming an audience success.The new Brahms Complete Edition has chosen as its principal source a copy of the scores first edition that Brahms used as his personal work copy. There, however, errors remained undiscovered, and recurred in later print runs as well. It was not until the new Brahms Edition that a music text of the D-major Serenade is finally being published, a text that clearly heeds all of the composers emendations and eliminates other shortcomings.

Classical ReminiscencesDuring his time as conductor of the Detmold court orchestra, the young Brahms was inspired by the local wind ensemble to compose two serenades. Serenade No. 2, scored for five pairs of winds, violas, cellos, and string basses (leaving out the violins) is strongly reminiscent in sound of Mozart's wind serenades. The expressive Adagio is the heart of the five-movement work. Quite untypical of Brahms, he acquired a liking for the work from the outset, still undertaking a revision scarcely 15 years after the premiere of 1860; this has now been made available in a new practical edition based on the Johannes Brahms Complete Edition (JBG).

When Dvorák wrote his Serenade for 10 winds and 2 lower strings in January 1878, the heyday of the great wind serenades and “Harmoniemusik†wind ensembles was already long gone. He was probably inspired by hearing Mozart's Gran Partita shortly beforehand in Vienna. The home key of d minor here is striking, as is the often serious, even tragic atmosphere that repeatedly darkens the otherwise cheerful mood that is typical of the serenade genre. Perhaps this was a reaction to the death of two of his children just a few months earlier. Despite the work's dramatic character - or perhaps because of it - Dvorák's Serenade was taken up in many European cities soon after its first performance in Prague, and fêted as a significant contribution to the chamber music repertoire for wind instruments. The autograph sources in Prague have been consulted for this Urtext edition. The parts are printed with player-friendly page divisions, perfect page-turning opportunities, and practical alternative parts in F for the three horns.

Written in 1998, Pacific Serenade is a “peaceful serenade:” serenade as in: romantic, quasi improvised music which should be sung at night under the stars. The main “singer” here is the clarinet. In general the music is extremely quiet, delicate, sensuous and sentimental. The sensuousness is created by Latin song elements especially the nostalgic Brazilian folk song, which is at times combined with Blues style melody and harmony. The string quartet has a technically expressively challenging part which is not merely the accompaniment to the clarinet, but rather it is responsible for setting the mood in which the clarinet sings. This is Aguila’s opus 59 and it was commissioned by Pacific Serenades Ensemble of California who premiered the work in 1998. Of course the ensemble's name inspired the name of this work as well as its mood. In an age of boom boxes, media bombardment of information and pop culture becoming increasingly aggressive, boisterous and violent, I felt the need to write just the opposite… to show once more that less is more. -- Miguel del Aguila.

He initially found employment as an oboist in pit orchestras in New York City, later as an arranger of popular music for various ensembles, including those by William C. Handy, James P. Johnson and Paul Whiteman. His career as a composer was launched with a performance in 1931 of his Symphony No. 1 aAfro-Americana by the Rochester Philharmonic, conducted by Howard Hanson, who would remain a life-long champion of Stillas orchestral works. By the 1950s the symphony had been performed in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and various European capitals. “Born in Paris in 1899, Francis Poulenc soon became a notable composer and pianist. His Serenade, originally composed in 1925-1926 for Voice and Piano, met much success as part of his Bawdy Songs. Therefore, it was well-received when Maurice Gendron transcribed it for Cello and Piano. Poulenc, as a member of Les Six, composed music in a style contrary to that of Richard Wagner and impressionists Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel. Serenade reflects the composer's contrasting style, making use of a 6/8 time signature, double stops, variations in articulation and wide range on the Cello. Being an imaginative and evocative composition, Serenade, transcribed for Cello and Piano, is a pleasurable addition to the repertoire.â€.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) wrote the SERENADE No. 5 in D Major, K. 204/213a on August 5, 1775 for ceremonies at the University of Salzburg. Concurrently writing his five violin concertos, the composer chose to feature a solo violin in three of the movements. While it retains a seven-part structure, an impromptu violin concerto is cleverly couched within the work.
