Saxophon, Schlagzeug, Klavier: drei sehr verschiedene Klangkorper, jeder fur sich allein auf ganz unterschiedliche Weise die kompositorische Phantasie anregend. Aber: wie sollte daraus ein Klangganzes entstehen, ein homogener und daruber hinaus spezifischer und nur fur dieses Stuck charakteristischer Ensembleklang? Ein Gesamtklang also, in dem sich die heterogenen Bestandteile gegenseitig sinnvoll und sinnlich erfahrbar begrunden? Klang existiert aber (zumindest in meinem musikalischen Denken) nicht fur sich allein, kann nicht isoliert gedacht werden. Zum Klang gehort immer auch Struktur, Raum und Zeit, in denen er sich entfaltet, seine Verbindung mit anderen Klangen, Bewegung, Richtung, musikalische Form. Ich habe daher dem Stuck uber weite Strecken ein komplexes, sich in vielschichtig durchdringender Prozesshaftigkeit standig erweiterndes Zeit-Netz zugrunde gelegt, das zunachst ganz ohne Rucksicht auf die zu verwendenden Klange entworfen ist. In einer Art permanenter Schnitttechnik springt die Musik dabei standig hoquetusartig zwischen verschiedenen kleinsten Grundeinheiten hin und her (Sechzehntel-, Achtel- punkt, Achtel-Puls).In Konfrontation mit diesem labyrinthisch verzweigten Zeit- und Form-Netz empfand ich die instrumentale Ausgangssituation zwar nach wie vor als heterogen und widerspruchlich, aber doch auch sich gegenseitig kommentierend, die jeweilige Charakteristik und instrumentale Aura relativierend und so letztlich aus sich selbst heraus wieder formbildend. Ausserdem ergaben sich neben der erwahnten Suche nach dem ganz individuellen, unberuhrten Klang Moglichkeiten zur Integration scheinbar vertrauterer, virtuos-instrumentaltypischer Spielweisen, denn das Gestalthafte, Figurative wird durch die permanenten Schnitte wieder zum charakteristischen, individuellen Klang-Impuls zusammengepresst.Die aus der Konfrontation solch unterschiedlicher Spharen resultierende Sperrigkeit aber setzt kommunikative Qualitaten ins Werk. Die Musik begnugt sich nicht mit nur auf sich selbst bezogene Klang- bzw. Struktur-Bastelei, sondern mochte ihre Zuhorer ansprechen, sich ihnen mitteilen, ohne dabei einer von vornherein funktionierenden, also falschen Sprachfertigkeit zu erliegen. Preface The three movements of the quartet may be perceived as three different expressions of an unstable core: an inherent unrest leads to frequent changes of direction. The first movement is full of dramatic contrasts: it is followed by a second movement, whose basic mood of meditative rest is challenged by occasional centrifugal utbursts, while the third movement takes the inherent conflicts to a higher level, contrasting material of introspective lyricism with excessively pathetic moods. The final way out is a retrograde one, (back) into the source: through a constant accelerando-diminuendo the piece disappears into a vanishing point. The into the source of the titlemay be visualized as a reversed fountain-action: the broad fan-like spread of the first movement, a more coherent-solid second movement, and finally - in the third movement - a return-run, ever more vehemently, like a suction into the spring itself ... The musical motifs are varied: there are traffic-situations (which I heard!) with stomping and machine-like rhythms in different, but simultaneous tempi, and there are more abstract upwards and downwards half-tone-scales, with changing accents, creating glimpses of melodies. INTO THE SOURCE, String Quartet No. 9, was composed on a double-commission from the Orion Quartet and the Vertavo Quartet. The premiere performances took places in Santa Fe in 2002 and in Oslo in 2003. Per Norgard.

Of Skies, Rivers, Lakes and Mountains was commissioned by the Northern California Band Directors' Association to honour their 50th Anniversary in 2012. The first performance was given by the Association’s 2012 Honor Band, conducted by Dr Royce Trevis, in the Harlen Adams Theater, California State University, Chico, California, on 4th February that year.The brief for the commission asked for a piece that celebrated the United States’ natural resources and composer Philip Sparke turned to Katharine Lee Bates’s lyrics for the song America the Beautiful, of which the first and last verses are:O beautiful for spacious skies,For amber waves of grain,For purplemountain majestiesAbove the fruited plain!America! America!God shed His grace on thee,And crown thy good with brotherhoodFrom sea to shining seaThe three movements each take their title from these verses:1. O Beautiful for Spacious Skies: Opening with filigree woodwind figuring, this movement aims to recreate the light and lightness of a spring sky, birds and blossoms floating on gentle breezes.2. From Sea to Shining Sea: A vivacious celebration of water bubbling in streams, rivers and lakes.3. For Purple Mountain Majesties: A slow final movement representing an awe-inspiring range of mountains Of Skies, Rivers, Lakes and Mountains is geschreven in opdracht van de Northern California Band Directors' Association, ter gelegenheid van het vijftigjarig jubileum van deze organisatie, dat in 2012 werd gevierd. Lotta Wennäkoski's Pige (2021-2022) for string quartet was commissioned to be paired with the Death and the Maiden quartet by Franz Schubert (pige is Danish for girl). The composer tells:The first movement Vorüber, ach, vorüber! is based on the first half of Schubert’s lied lying behind his The Death and the Maiden quartet. The maiden’s song in the beginning of the lied has not found its way to his string quartet, so I wanted to use this material in mine. The second move-ment Daktylus borrows its idea from the haunting pulse of Schubert’s chant of Death. Something fierce and something soundless can be heard here - along with other variants on the dactyl rhythm. For example, I’ve written a lyrically flowing melody based on the same rhythmic pattern (long-short-short).Schubert’s quartet is wonderful music and of course a cornerstone of the repertoire, and the death and the maiden is a strong, tempting and gloomy motif in art history. On the other hand, I just couldn’t help seeing the motif also as a - somewhat passé - image of an old male desiring the ulti-mately young female body. The third movement thus turns its gaze to the girl herself. Pigen og scrapbogen, The Girl and the Scrapbook, is joyful textural music - compiled of fragments and freely handled quotations that might spring to mind when thinking of a vital girl’s life.This product includes the full score and the set of parts.Movements:1. The three movements of Adventures in Yellowstone present iconic scenes from the park. The first movement, Waiting for Old Faithful, begins with a tremolo, representing the rumbling before the famous geyser erupts, followed by figures that move up and down the keyboard depicting the shooting water. Grand Prismatic Spring is the second movement, a mysterious piece filled with scale-like figures and short motives based on various intervals. The last movement, Wildlife in the Valleys, creates various moods associated with animals found in the region, including wolves, bears, and buffalo. The exciting ending concludes with a glissando and fortissimo chords.

Multiple Choirs. The Mass in Space was begun in the early 1980s and premiered March 12,1983 at Saint Peter's Church in NYC. After many years of following Charles Ives' dictum concerning spatial music (Place sound forces in space according to the structure of the music) in the Gregg Smith Singers' programming, Gregg decided to write a larger work completely devoted to spatial techniques. Writing music for space has one major problem: rhythmic togetherness. A couple of modern techniques and aleatoric devices and free rhythms are ideal for solving some of the problems, especially for performers at some distance from the conductor. Throughout the Mass, the chorus on stage and the piano are the set unit, while the performers in back/balcony have greater rhythmic freedom. All six movementsKyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus-Hosanna, Benetictus-Hosanna and Agnus Dei pursue a different spatial aspect.The Gregg Smith Singers have performed excerpts from Mass in Space all across the US on several national tours, and in Russia in 1995 for the St. Petersburg International Spring Festival of Contemporary Music. In a subsequent tour of Northern France, GSS was challenged and thrilled to sing it in the Riems Cathedral and in the huge Amiens Cathedral. Wherever it has been performed, audience reaction has been overwhelmingly good.
