With the title of this composition, Fever Fantasy, Jorg Widmann refers to its musical air: 'I often feel Robert Schumann's melodic shape to be like the amplitude of a temperature curve: nervous, flickering, feverish, an infinite number of small and large wave crests and troughs within the principal line.'The composer approaches this sound phenomenon with a setting for acoustic instruments. Nevertheless, he succeeds in conjuring up very unusual sound spectrums. Over long sections, the notation of this score mirrors the musical progressions, containing no concrete pitches but detailed performance instructions instead. Slowly, individual tones emergefrom ascending pizzicato lines, colourless sound surfaces, sounds of harmonics roughened by tremolos, and virtuoso clarinet scales, tones that do not reveal their origin until the work ends: C - F - E - D sharp, the beginning of Schumann's first violin sonata.

Reise brings his signature rhythmic impulses to his 2004 quartet, the intricate Across the Horizons. Although many point to the instrumentation as a Messiaen quartet (Quatuor pour le fin du temps), let there be no further comparison. Reise, who was earlier introduced to Carnatic rhythms of South India music and who finds ways of incorporating them into his own, has taken us on a significant journey in three movements. As always, Reise's music attracts the finest performers - Across the Horizons has been recorded by Charles Abramovic (piano), Allison Herz (clarinet), Karen Bentley Pollick (violin), and Michal Schmidt (cello). For advanced performers.

This emotional and reflective work paints a stunning picture of the holiday season as seen through the eyes of a homeless person on a street corner. The music relies heavily on a juxtaposition of the Ukrainian Bell Carol and Greensleeves, painting a picture of a lonely person who is eventually joined by others. Ultimately, a quartet performs in dramatic fashion before switching to a final duet, leaving the homeless person with a granted wish - company. A stunning and unique work that brings incredible awareness to the holidays and the true spirit of giving.

The circumstances of the origin of Sinfonia concertante in Eb major (KV 297 b) are disputed; it was probably created in Paris in April 1778 for four famous solo instrumentalists of the Mannheim Court Chapel. In his arrangement, Werner Egk included and extended the concertante aspect: In 1981, a few weeks before his death, he arranged the work for two oboes, clarinets, horns, bassoons each and double-bass so that now a solo quartet is opposed to a tutti quartet. For wind ensembles, this piece is a valuable addition to their repertoire, for Mozart lovers it is a charming view from an unfamiliar perspective.

Following his early departure from the opera stage in 1829, besides chamber music Gioachino Rossini composed only larger scored works of church music. The Stabat Mater is among these. It was composed in two different phases between 1831 and 1841 and received its premiere in Paris in 1842. The text is fashioned as a prayer describing Mary's pain in the face of the crucified Christ. Time and again the vivid language of this text, a Latin poem probably from the 13th century, has inspired settings by composers including illustrious names such as Pergolesi, Joseph Haydn and Verdi. In 10 movements Rossini unites different forms such as aria, duet, quartet and chorus, an operatic aria-like style of writing as well as a strict a cappella style resulting in one of the highpoints of this genre. For this arrangement, the vocal score (CV 70.089/03), choral score (CV 70.089/05) and parts for strings and timpani from the original orchestral version can also be used. Score available separately - see item CA.7008900.
