A versatile Mass setting for use throughout the liturgical year, Mass of the Sun of Justice / Misa Sol de Justicia is fully bilingual, singable entirely in English or in Spanish, or any pastoral combination of both languages. At its core, this setting is built on assembly-minded melodies. Much of the choral writing is two-part, albeit spelled out in four voices, whereby the basses frequently double the soprano melody, and the alto and tenor lines essentially share a single harmony in their respective ranges, splitting only at cadence points for a fuller effect. Optional descants and divisi further expand the voicing possibilities. The additional instrumentation is particularly spirited, further enhancing these sung texts for solemn occasions. “Sun of justice” is a term used to reference Christ with respect to his second coming, as found in the ancient “O” antiphons. This title appears in the Lectionary among the Alleluia options for the common of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and is, in fact, assigned to the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, celebrated within the Advent season. In contrast to his other large-scale choral works, however, Bach never gave this work a definitive final form. Rather, for every performance he substantially revised the general concept of the piece and also changed numerous details. All previous editions of the St. John Passion have combined readings from various layers of sources and thus present the work in a form which was never heard during Bach's lifetime. Consequently, the wish often expressed by conductors to perform an authentic version by Bach could not be easily achieved. The present critical, new edition of the St. John Passion fulfills this wish and for the first time makes available the complete music of the second version of the work as it was performed under Bach's direction in 1725. Since a number of movements were replaced by others, including the opening chorus, this version differs most dramatically from the standard version which is well known today. Commissioned by the Maryknoll Community to celebrate its centenary of papal approval in 2011, Missa ad Gentes was composed with a particular vision – to create a Mass setting with the 2010 revised English texts representing both Maryknoll’s United States heritage as well as the diverse cultures in which Maryknoll missioners serve in Central and South America, Africa, Asia, and Oceania.   With each piece of the Mass, Fr. Joncas honors the musical heritage of a different culture, creating a truly unique setting celebrating the Church’s diversity.  The title, meaning “Mass ‘to the peoples’” draws on the text of the Second Vatican Council’s document on missionary activities. “It is my hope that the Missa ad Gentes will assist English-speaking Roman Rite Catholics to worship with new liturgical texts, faithful to their heritage but enriched by the great diversity of languages and cultures that make up the Church Catholic.” -Michael Joncas.
