An insipiring composition which features narration based on the story of how Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote the famous carol, I Heard The Bells On Christmas Day. The hand bell choir part (3 octaves) is totally optional, but gives the director a method of involving local hand bell choirs in the holiday concert. The narration is essential to the performance and also provides an opportunity to involve a local dignitary into the performance. Very distinctive and unique.

“The Old Fortress of Luxembourg” is a commissioned work by the Luxembourg Ministry of Culture for the overture of the official ceremony of Luxembourg's National Day. The piece is less concerned with history, but rather draws inspiration from the architecture of the ancient fortress of Luxembourg, known as “Lucilinburhuc.” The fortress, over 1000 years old and also referred to as the “Gibraltar of the North,” primarily consists today of the Bock Rock, the crypt, the casemates (an underground defense system consisting of kilometers of tunnels), and the Holy Spirit Citadel. These elements are portrayed through radiant fanfare sounds, rhythmic orchestral movements, patriotic choral melodies, and at times, somber musical depictions. As an optional highlight, a choir, supported by a boys' choir, interprets the newly composed text of the third verse of the Luxembourgish National Anthem, adding an additional touch of patriotic grandeur to this piece.

Soaring is a mode of flight in which height is gained slowly by using air that is moving upwards. Written for music educator’s Randy Heuvelman’s 30 years of service to the Woodland (Illinois) School District, Soaring paints a music portrait of dedication, compassion and intensity, all aspects of this educator’s tenure. A slower middle section alternating between choirs of woodwinds and brass paints a serene portrait with lush harmonies and soaring countermelodies. The extensive percussion scoring utilizes timbres that add and complement the completed musical setting. Soaring is truly one of David’s best works.

The poem “The Resurrection” by Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock was set to music by Gustav Mahler in the fifth movement of his Second Symphony, known as the “Resurrection.” The central passage from Mahler's musical adaptation was incorporated into “A Tribute to Mahler,” a composition created in homage to Mahler, 100 years after his death. Powerful brass tones and delicate woodwind melodies alternate in a Mahleresque manner with horn and trumpet signals from a distance. The choir is delicately complemented by the solo alto saxophone. “A Tribute to Mahler” aims to, like a continuation “after a short repose,” offer us a glimpse into the blissful world to which we will all eventually journey.
