Deeply moved by his first visit to the city of Jerusalem with its seven gates, Krzysztof Penderecki composed this major vocal work to celebrate the city's 3,000th anniversary in 1995. Two years later, it was premiered as Symphony No. 7 in which the magic number seven has a special meaning: From the seven movements representing the seven gates to the seven powerful fortissimo chords concluding the oratorio, the biblical number runs through the entire work.4 (3. u. 4. auch Picc.) * 3 * Engl. Mendelssohn's St. Paul with just seven instead of the usual 18 wind instruments? Thanks to this arrangement for chamber orchestra, a performance with smaller forces is now possible, and presents an attractive alternative for performing Mendelssohn's first oratorio - not only in times of Corona. For it is often considerations of space, a limited budget, or the size of the chorus which call for flexibility in scoring. The arrangement is based on the Carus Urtext edition. By reducing the symphonic wind and brass in particular, the volume of sound is more restrained, but nevertheless the symphonic character and a wide dynamic range are retained. All the vocal parts (soloists and chorus) are identical with the original version, so that the vocal scores, choral scores, and practice aids of the existing Carus edition can still be used. Major oratorio can also be performed by smaller choirsWind and brass parts of the original version reduced to just seven single instruments vocal scores and choral scores from the original version can be used carus plus: the work (original version) is available in carus music, the Choir Coach, and in the Carus Choir Coach (Audio only) series.. Written in 2010 for the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Wigglesworth's nine-minute work explores the idea of perpetuum mobile (continuous movement) in seven connected, miniature inventions. A regular pulse forms the work's core, with elaborations of the central musical idea shifting constantly around it in jagged rhythms and sumptuous orchestration. The composer writes, The seven sections can very briefly be described thus: 1) an active, miniature 'theme and variations'; 2) the juxtaposition of various fragmentary two-part inventions; 3) a tremolo string ostinato with woodwind interjections, building towards the first climax; 4) an ostinato passing between horns and muted trumpets together with a dialogue for high woodwind and low strings; 5) a very slow canon for string harmonics and pizzicato double basses; 6) a fast, one-part invention beginning with solo piccolo, and gradually leading to the second climax; 7) chorale. This is a lively orchestral miniature which gives the impression of a kaleidoscope, with short musical ideas cutting across each other in quick succession.

Symphonies of Time and Tide was written to be performed during the composer’s 70th birthday year and it is dedicated to members of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and its remarkable chief conductor Vasily Petrenko. Despite the title, it is a single-movement work, conceived as a whole, with a somewhat traditional symphonic shape underpinning the seven sections. Listeners should have little difficulty in identifying, in particular a light and jazzy section (III), a ‘slow movement’ (IV and V) and a ‘finale’ (VI) and ‘coda’ (VII).

Programme note
Morpheus in the Greek mythology is the most powerful of the Oneroi, the gods of dreams. He is the one who sends us our dreams and he may appear to us within the dreams in disguise.
Analogous to the logic of dreams, in Morpheus everything is interwoven, as chains of associations appear to logically lead us from one line of thought to another. Everything seems strangelyfamiliar. But the logic is treacherous and we already feel, it may only be valid within the dream. Nothing that appears similar is actually ever really the same.
Half awakening, we struggle to hold on to a vanishing world we felt we were on the verge of understanding, but which we already know will eventually escape us when we fully awake.
Everything remains a mystery until the end.

Composed in 2015, Stabat Mater was commissioned by the Genesis Foundation for Harry Christophers and The Sixteen. Scored for mixed chorus and string orchestra, it is a long-awaited sequel to the early masterpiece Seven Last Words from the Cross (1993), for the same forces; indeed, the later work begins with the pianissimo 'dying breaths' with which the earlier score so unforgettably closes. Cast in four movements, Stabat Mater has a duration of 53 minutes. Following the premiere London's Financial Times commented that the composer speaks of a 'painful world of loss, violence, and spiritual desolation'. Both sides of MacMillan are to be found here, the devotional and the painter of bold, dramatic canvases - the former in the ethereal writing for solo and ensemble voices, the latter in the lacerating blows and feverish anxieties depicted in the string ensemble..

“Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992) is known for his unique composition style. Incorporating complex rhythms, harmony, melodies and his passion for ornithology, his The Transfiguration of Our Lord Jesus Christ for Choir, Seven solo instruments and Orchestra is no exception to the composer's popular, distinctive style. Composed between 1965-1969, The Transfiguration of Our Lord Jesus Christ is based on the account of Jesus' Transfiguration, found in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke. The work requires a huge 200 performers and with 14 movements, a typical performance lasts about an hour and a half. The Transfiguration of Our Lord Jesus Christ incorporates Messiaen's popular compositional techniques, such as his modes of limited transposition, and the use of birdsong. Texts are largely based on the Bible. The Transfiguration of Our Lord Jesus Christ is essential to all advanced musicians seeking to expand and vary their ensemble repertoire on a large-scale.&rdquo.

Ravel needed only two weeks of intensive concentration to orchestrate his piano suite Valses nobles et sentimentales, which was given its premiere performance in March 1911. Consisting of seven waltzes and one epilogue, the work stamped Ravel as a creative personality whose masterpiece breathed an unbelievably new kind of musicality and incredibly intensive poetry. Let us not forget that this was twelve years before La Valse, with which it shares a number of similarities. The new edition of the complete performance material in Breitkopf's Urtext series was prepared by the Ravel expert Jean-Francois Monnard.A l'exemple de Schubert - Ravel re-invents the waltz, inspired by Liszt, Chopin, Schumann and Chabrier, transforming the rhapsodic gyrations of the dance and sending it whirling into the 20th century.

In this symphony, C.Ph.E. Bach appears as pioneer of the Viennese Classicism. Just in the first movement, we encounter a theme of individual form, a seven-bar (!) combination of syncopated tone repetition with smallsegmented triad splitting. The fact that the material of the whole movement is won from that, is a principle which was often used in the classical period.

That Schumann truly dug his heels into symphonic creation becomes clear at the latest when we look not only at his four well-known symphonies, but also at the works between the genres, such as the Overture, Scherzo and Finale. Unlike the traditional symphonic form, this work has no slow movement. Schumann spoke of it as a suite which hints at a loose connection of movements and as a sinfonietta. Ultimately, he decided to name it after the headings of the three movements which also share common traits among one another. Overture, Scherzo and Finale is being published here for the first time with an Urtext score and parts. The genesis of the work was marked by corrections and revisions. Schumann subjected the work to a thorough revision after the premiere performance and, after the publication of the orchestral parts in 1846, made more changes for the first edition of the score seven years later.Urtext of Schumanns Sinfonietta.

To mark the 150th anniversary of Armas Jarnefelt, Fennica Gehrman publishes his hitherto unpublished works. Jarnefelt's first composition for stage was music for Z. Topelius's play Miranda in 1900-1901. It is a kind of melodrama with recitation and choral singing, not so much incidental music. Jarnefelt composed a rather broad array of numbers for Miranda, seven movements in total. Miranda is characterized by a downwards moving chromatic chord progression. Listeners especially liked the Nymf- och trolldans movement, its slowly and elegantly swinging waltz, and the Oriental colours of one of the dance movements. Orchestral parts available for hire.

Scored for baritone solo, small 'narrator' chorus, large chorus and orchestra, MacMillan's first Passion setting was composed in 2007. Lasting 87 minutes the work is divided into two parts, with 10 movements overall. As Paul Spicer has commented, “The originality of the St John Passion lies in MacMillan's ability to mix old with new, rather in the manner of Bach in his day. There are passages of sumptuous polyphony and there is a fresh look at the text where passages of Latin are interspersed with the Gospel story in English. In movement seven ('Jesus and his Mother'), MacMillan introduces not only part of the Stabat Mater but also his own words ('Lully, lulla, my dear darling'). The final movement, which is purely orchestral, is a kind of via doloroso march with a Scots lament over quite brass chords. The string writing here, with its elegiac cello lines, is deeply reminiscent of the early 20th-century English school. This should be the War Requiem of the 21st century.&rdquo.
