Organ Duration: 28 ' Composed: 2012 Published by: Zimbel Press This work features seven meditations on the Seven Last Words of Jesus Christ from the cross. Each part of the composition is musically and spiritually connected with one of the words. The music attempts to portray the meaning of the words, and to heighten how they sound. Often the left hand of the organ represents Christ’s body, the right hand represents his soul, and the pedals represent his breath. In many passages, the listener can observe the instrument in its search for forgiveness, hope, and light..

Since January 2008, the first scholarly, critical edition of the works of Max Reger (RWA) is being produced at the Max-Reger-Institute, Karlsruhe. Its design as a hybrid edition breaks new ground in the methods of editorial practice. It comprises three areas of Reger's compositional output: Organ works, Lieder and choruses and, for the first time, Max Reger's arrangements of works by other composers. To begin the series, the first seven volumes have been published and contain the organ works, which have been eagerly awaited by many. The Max-Reger-Institut (MRI), located in Karlsruhe, Germany, has initiated the first ever scholarly-critical edition of works by Max Reger. The Reger-Werkausgabe (RWA) is sponsored by the Mainzer Akademie der Wissenschaften und der Literatur and with its design as a hybrid edition breaks new ground in the editorial techniques. The seventh and final volume in the series of organ works includes, in chronological order, the organ pieces Max Reger composed in 1904 and 1906 in Munich, in 1912 in Berchtesgaden, in 1913 in Kolberg, and in 1915 to 1916 in Jena.

As well as 20 organ sonatas and seven collections of stand-alone organ pieces with opus numbers, Rheinberger composed a whole range of smaller works for organ methods or organ collections for his favorite instrument, mainly at the request of colleagues and friends. They are ideally suited for mass and organ lessons. This organ volume brings together twelve compositions Rheinberger wrote for different occasions and at various points during his career. Included in the collection are seven short pieces in different keys that date from the early 1860s. Rheinberger wrote these at the request of his teacher Herzog and others for several organ collections of “easy, performable†pieces – and they are rewarding pieces for liturgical use. The works without opus numbers (WoO 10, 37, 56, 70) can no longer be regarded as early works. The Fugue in F minor WoO 10 of 1867, with its tendency to translate counterpoint into expressive chordal writing, already displays many characteristics of the late Rheinberger, the Canzonetta WoO 77 is a late work from autumn 1899, whereas the Romanze WoO 70 is a second version of no. 1 of the Miscellaneen op. 174 in the easier to play key of C major.Separate edition from Supplementary Volume 3 of the Rheinberger Complete Edition.

Spoken during his final hours, the “seven words†have been taken as a profound insight into Jesus‘s final suffering on the cross. These words, or rather statements, have been set by numerous composers in different languages. Charles Gounod’s setting of The Seven Words of Christ on the Cross returns to the Latin text and explicitly recalls the music of Palestrina, but with an added nineteenth-century harmonic twist. The edition of this a cappella work comes with a piano reduction for rehearsal purposes. Score available separately - see item CA.2331100.

The musical counterpoint possible in two and three-voice compositions make them a natural fit for the organ, and such works have been a part of the instrument’s repertoire since the very beginning. David Lasky has written seven free duos, eight free trios, and seven trios on familiar hymns to comprise this useful collection. The pieces are all short—most are less than two minutes—and thus can serve, individually or in groups, as fitting music anywhere in a service. Additionally, they will work well as teaching pieces at the early intermediate or intermediate level.

As well as 20 organ sonatas and seven collections of stand-alone organ pieces with opus numbers, Rheinberger composed a whole range of smaller works for organ methods or organ collections for his favorite instrument, mainly at the request of colleagues and friends. The Prelude in G major by Nikolaus Bruhns arranged by Rheinberger in 1882 specifically “for concert performance†shows Rheinberger as an editor skilled at “recreating†older works. He added individual voices or chords to the original composition, and occasionally restructured the part-writing – an interesting version for performing on a late 19th-century organ.Separate edition from Supplementary Volume 3 of the Rheinberger Complete Edition.

The fourth volume of the section of the Reger Edition devoted to his organ works comprises, in chronological order, the chorale preludes composed between October 1893 and November 1914 in Wiesbaden, Weiden, Munich, Leipzig, and Meiningen. The composition of chorale preludes accompanied Reger throughout his entire career, even though they were composed primarily in the years from 1900 to 1902 and 1914 (Opus 135a). As almost no other composer at the turn of the century, he dedicated himself to the chorale prelude, composing around 100 works in this genre. From his Pater noster for soloists, choir and orchestra, written in the form of a cantata, in which the original Latin text is combined with the new German translation of the President of the Bundestag, Norbert Lammert, Stefan Heucke has taken an almost seven-minute German version for mixed choir and organ for practical use and newly arranged it.The text version of Norbert Lammert uses a direct and concise language which reinterprets several archaic expressions of the traditional translation: 'Dein Reich kommt, wenn dein Wille geschieht, auch auf Erden'. Stefan Heucke set the choral parts in major/minor-mode homophony in a deliberately simple way. The organ basically supports the choral setting and expands it rhythmically and harmonically now and then.
