Lar in Roman mythology refers to the so-called Lares, gods of households, fields and pathways, deified souls of the deceased and tutelary deities, especially of the house and its inhabitants. Lar is also the fireplace in a house - and thus a place where you feel protected. Lar II is part of a cycle. Each piece focusses on a kind of movement or transition between the interior (the house) and the unknown (the outside, the adventure). Gilles Deleuze speaks of deterritorialization; it is precisely this process that is also used in music as a metaphor. For Deleuze, a melody can act as a ritornello, for example, representing the house, the acquainted. Lar II plays with ritornellos which are developed alternatingly - like breathing- with certain movements to the outside and back again. Musically, the instrument organ opens/introduces as a topos something within a space and focusses on the concept of space as the central point of a continuous musical transition. (Jose M. Sonata Eroica, Op. 94 (1930) is a melodious piece composed by Joseph Jongen for great organ. Dedicated to Joseph Bonnet who was the organist of the St Eustache Church in Paris, this piece is quite difficult (upper intermediate/advanced level) and requires the use of different keyboard divisions and pedals. Lasting around 16 minutes, this wonderful work is quite architectural and will astonish you by its grandeur. It is the perfect piece to include in a recital. Joseph Jongen was a Belgian organist, composer and professor of harmony and counterpoint. He won the Belgian Prix de Rome and composed numerous pieces including music chamber works, symphonies, concertos and songs. His most famous piece is the Symphonie Concertante (1926).

Oskar Merikanto (1868-1924) was Finland's first Finnish-speaking organ virtuoso and the founder of the Finnish organ school. His compositions for organ remain at the core of Finnish organ repertoire, besides being an integral part of our cultural history: some of them reflect important events in Finnish music or society at large. Merikanto was an innovator. His organ works were the earliest extensive concert pieces written in Finland that demanded high technical proficiency and made use of the most recent developments in organ building. This critical edition of works for organ by Oskar Merikanto was edited by Jan Lehtola D.Mus., organist and Merikanto scholar.

Carson Cooman is surely one of the most exciting and versatile contemporary composers in the USA. Born in New York in 1982, he has already written over 1,200 works. Many of these are compositions for organ - the instrument which Cooman, himself a concert organist, feels a particular affinity towards. A selection of these organ works is now available in this publication, including freely-composed preludes, chorale preludes, and festive and quieter pieces, meditative in style. The compositions are in an extended tonal framework and are of moderate difficulty. A superb addition to the repertoire both for concerts and worship!

Bela Bartok composed Dance Suite in 1923 for the 50th anniversary of the foundation of Hungary's capital through the unification of Buda, Obuda, and Pest. It soon became one of his most popular orchestral works, and in 1925 he arranged it for piano solo. Adam Tabajdi completed the organ version of Dance Suite in 2019/20, and recorded it on the Kern organ of Sapporo's Kitara Concert Hall later that year. His transcription was inspired by the composer's own version for piano, exploiting the alternative solutions offered by the ''orchestral'' timbres of the organ, with its manuals and pedals. The ideal instrument for the present version is an expansive, eclectic style organ with at least three manuals. This flamboyant arrangement requires great virtuosity, stamina, and creativity from the performer. Adam Tabajdi (b. 1993) is an outstanding young Hungarian organist. Alongside the music of J. S. Bach, his repertoire includes Liszt, and Franck, as well as twentieth-century works, with a special focus on Messiaen, Ligeti, and Florentz. He is a committed performer of contemporary music, but he also feels a close connection with the works of old masters such as Sweelinck, Weckmann, and Couperin. In 2021 he won first prize in the Toulouse International Organ Competition, and in 2022 he was awarded the Junior Prima Award.

For the first time a completely self-contained organ repertoire is presented which originated in the churches of northern Germany after 1780, and yet keeping up the musical traditions of the 17th century. Thus, a many-facetted, more recent organ music from northwestern middle Europe is now accessible. Focal points of the music clearly are church songs and counterpoint; a fascinating element is the rich chromaticism. The pieces are of medium difficulty, practical for liturgical or concert use.

Rhapsody in A (2017) is dedicated to organist Alessandro Bianchi and was written for premiere performance on the 1904 Lewis & Co. organ in Ayr Town Hall, Ayr, Scotland, in celebration of the 10th anniversary of the organ concert series there. The title refers both to the tonal/modal center of A and to the first letters of both Alessandro and Ayr. The rhapsody is entirely based on the unaccompanied melody first heard at the outset. This melody serves as the basis of the following contrasting sections; it is used both motivically and to determine the harmonic excursions. The music ends jubilantly. Instrumentation: Organ Duration: 8' Composed: 2017 Published by: Zimbel Press.

Robert Helmschrott, born in 1938, was professor at the Munich Musikhochschule where he was also headmaster from 1995-2003. He wrote numerous choral and orchestral works and is one of the most important German representatives of contemporary church music. His work 'Salut' is a one-movement concert piece which is rewarding for both players. After a lengthy introduction for solo trumpet, both instruments present fireworks of brilliant idiomatic figurations, yet also make sure that pensive, lyrical tones get their fair share too. A rewarding concert piece of ca. 8 minutes' duration.
