Judas Maccabeus became one of Handel's most popular oratorios during his lifetime after its London premier in 1747. The recitative and aria is from late in the work and is a reminder to the house of Judah to not fear the nations that defy the Israelites; that God will defend and be the friend of Zion. This lyrical arrangement of about seven minutes in length by Stan Pethel is appropriate for intermediate level Tubists or Bass Trombonists.

The Tuba part is all written out with jazz inflections and articulation included. The Piano part is all written out, but also includes the jazz chords for players who wish to comp. These Carols are playable by moderately advanced performers and are perfect for parties, church services, busking & recitals. Range is very moderate, nothing high at all.

Johann Wanhal (Vanhal) was an important classical composer from Bohemian/Czech heritage (1739-1813). His main living was as an organist and choirmaster, however Wanhal's musical output as a composer includes over a dozen concerti, many symphonies, chamber music, operas and much sacred music including 58 masses.

Wanhal is rumored to have played chamber music with Mozart, Haydn and Dittersdorf, with Wanhal on the cello.

In the 1770's Wanhal met the contrabassist Johannes Matthias Sperger and wrote a double bass concerto for him. The Concerto is in the key of E-Flat (original key of D for the double bass) in three movements and has been expertly arranged for Tuba and Piano by Ms. Janet Yarbrough of Duke University.

This work is available for solo Tuba with Wind Ensemble.
