Cityscape dates from 1992 and was composed for inclusion in an organ recital of Chicago composers as part of the Fourth Presbyterian Church's annual Festival of the Arts. The theme of that year's festival was Faces of the City. This three movement work, which depicts facets of the city, is based on a three-note descending scale (C-B-A), the opening notes of the popular song, Chicago, Chicago, that Toddlin' Town. Coincidentally, this same melodic sequence marks the beginning of OLD HUNDREDTH, and a citation of that melody occurs in the third movement. The Fourth Presbyterian Church is located on the part of North Michigan Avenue which is known as The Magnificent Mile. Each of its Sunday morning services begins with the singing of OLD HUNDREDTH, sung to the text of the Doxology. The first performance of Cityscape was played by David Schrader, to whom it is dedicated.

La Bamba is actually an old folk song from South America. This happy dance tune first achieved worldwide success through the rock ’n’ roll singer Ritchie Valens, however, who in 1958 gave the song his own incomparable treatment. And it’s this version that the experienced arranger Naohiro Iwai took as the basis fort his wind orchestra version.

La Bamba is eigenlijk een oud volksliedje uit Zuid-Amerika. Wereldwijde bekendheid verkreeg het vrolijke danslied door de Rock-‘n’-Roll zanger Richie Valens die het in 1958 op geheel eigen wijze vertolkte. Deze versie nam arrangeur Naohiro Iwai als basis voor zijn versie voor blaasorkest.

La Bamba ist eigentlich ein altes Volkslied aus Südamerika. Weltweite Bekanntheit erlangte das fröhliche Tanzlied jedoch durch den Rock-‘n’-Roll-Sänger Ritchie Valens, der 1958 dem Lied seine eigene Note verlieh. Eben diese berühmte Fassung nahm sich der erfahrene Arrangeur Naohiro Iwai als Basis für diese Blasorchesterbearbeitung.

“'Kalaviuka' is an incarnated figure of the Buddha, the head of which looks human and the lower half like a bird with wings. In my work I would like to express the unity of man and nature, a conception deeply rooted in traditional Chinese art and culture, with a modern awareness. The musical material derives from traditional Chinese instrumental works which have birds as their subjects. In particular, these are passages (neither sung nor melodic) that imitate birdsong or depict the forms of birds by means of various instruments. These musical sections mostly consist of a combination of specially selected musical instruments with special techniques of sound production. My aim in composing this piece was to find out how these sounds could be transferred into an orchestra in order to develop a new musical vocabulary and new means of expression.” (Guoping Jia) The work was commissioned by Munich Biennale 2012 and Ernst von Siemens Musikstiftung.

Gerónimo Giménez was a Spanish conductor and composer, who dedicated his career to writing zarzuelas, such as La tempranica and La boda de Luis Alonso. Zarzuela is a Spanish lyric-dramatic genre thatalternates between spoken and sung scenes, the latter incorporating operatic and popular song, as well as dance.

In 1896, Giménez wrote ‘El baile de Luis Alonso’, based on a text by Javier de Burgos. Following thesuccess of this piece, he set to music another sainete by Burgos with the same characters, which became one of his most famous works: Las bodas de Luis Alonso (1897). This energetic work is full of sweepingmelodiclines and light, fast-moving bass lines. True to form, the piece has plenty of dramatic and comedic flair.

The 4th movement of the late nineteenth century composer’s prime work, written originally for orchestra, is presentedhere in a whimsical and virtuoso Piano transcription. Performance time is approximately 6 minutes.
