An instant hit, Grainger finalized this setting in spring 1918, and after publication in 1919, the sales of the sheet music broke publishing records and brought in the sort of steady income that is the envy of composers everywhere. While he used the funds to subsidize the careers of many fellow artists, Grainger became so identified with this rather lightweight piece that he came to despise it. Publisher G. Schirmer, wishing to capitalize on the popularity of Country Gardens, assigned Adolf Schmid, one of their in-house writers, to create this excellent orchestral version published in 1925. Schmid was an Austrian-American composer of some stature who, as a staff writer for the firm G. Schirmer, created orchestral versions of Grainger's Irish Tune from County Derry and Children's March, as well as music by numerous other composers. Schmid's orchestration served as the source material for a band version of Country Gardens that appeared in 1931, attributed to Tom Clark. The following note appeared on the concert band Synoptic Score (a most un-Grainger-like term): String-Bass and Harp (or any other) parts from Adolf Schmid's Arrangement of this number for orchestra (Galaxy No. 269) may be used with this band arrangement, affirming the relationship between Schmid's orchestration and Clark's band version. The sarabande originated in the early 17th century and is a stately dance in triple time. It was popular in France and Spain but as a dance it quickly spread throughout the courts of Europe and the style was soon adopted into instrumental music in dance suites for solo instruments as well as orchestra. Something of this style has influenced Simple Sarabande and although its harmonic language is perhaps more up-to-date it could be seen as a ‘period piece’.

Simple Sarabande ist im Stil der ursprünglichen Sarabande, einem würdevollen höfischen Tanz aus dem 17. Jahrhundert im 3/4-Takt, geschrieben, wenn auch Philip Sparke für seine Komposition einen etwas moderneren harmonischen Ausdruck wählte. Einfachheit und leichte fließende Bewegungen sind die Schlüsselworte in diesem Stück, in dem Ihr Blasorchester sich ganz auf die Schönheit von Ton und Phrasierung konzentrieren kann.

La sarabande est une danse au caractère digne, sur un rythme ternaire lent, dont l’origine remonte la première moitié du XVIIe siècle. Très appréciée en France et en Espagne, elle conquiert rapidement l’ensemble des cours européennes. La sarabande s’intègre alors dans la musique instrumentale et devient un mouvement fondamental de la suite de danses. On retrouve quelques éléments stylistiques de cette danse dans Simple Sarabande. La structure harmonique reste néanmoins plus moderne.

Part of the British folk revival of the early 20th century, Gustav Holst's (1874-1934) Somerset Rhapsody consists of his interpretations of three English folk tunes from the Somerset region: The Sheep-Shearing Song, High Germany, and True Love's Farewell. Holst dedicated this piece, his first major critical success, to Cecil Sharp, a chronicler of English folk music who collected the songs that Holst adapted. Holst intended the cycle to tell a story of a young couple whose relationship is interrupted by war. Somerset Rhapsody premiered in London in April 1910. As part of the year 2023, dedicated to Swiss composers, the Swiss Wind Band Association has commissioned Gauthier Dupertuis to write a new orchestration of the Overture in E-flat major by Stephan Jaeggi. Indeed, an update of the instrumentation was necessary for the interpretation of this work with modern orchestras. Therefore, the orchestration that Gauthier Dupertuis proposes and which he wanted to be faithful to the original while meeting current standards, will allow todayÂ’s orchestras to perform this piece of classical-romantic inspiration. Stephan Jaeggi was a Swiss composer and conductor who was born into a large family in Fulenbach (Canton of Solothurn) in 1903. He began playing the clarinet at the age of 13, then studied music at the Basel Conservatory and attended his military training with the Swiss Army Band. Thereafter, he became the conductor of several wind orchestras. In this role, and also that of a composer, Stephan Jaeggi went on to achieve great success. His early death in 1957 put a premature end to Stephan Jaeggi's creative life. All the more reason why his work lives on with unbroken power to this day.

Along with the movement In the King’s Hall, The Homage March from Act III of Sigurd Jorsalfar remains one of the most popular Scandinavian pieces of classical music. This arrangement has, once again, has been skilfully crafted by Wil van der Beek for a younger Concert Band and will be a popular addition to any concert.

Sigurd Jorsalfar ist die Bühnenmusik zum gleichnamigen Drama des berühmten norwegischen Dichters Bjørnsterne Bjørnson. Das Werk basiert auf einer altnordischen Sage von zwei Brüdern, die beide um den Königsthron kämpfen und einer Frau, die den Streit schlichten soll. Wil van der Beek bearbeitete den feierlichen Huldigungsmarsch aus diesem Werk für Blasorchester.

La Marche d’Hommage de l’acte III de la suite orchestrale Sigurd Jorsalfar d’Edvard Grieg, se trouve l’opposé des marches au caractère sombre ou martial. L’introduction en forme de fanfare est superbement lyrique. Puis vient l’exposition d’un thème joué cantabile. L’instrumentation développe quelque peu le thème initial avec des accents rythmiques la basse. Le thème de la marche est ainsi amorcé. Un trio central, lumineux et serein, précède le retour du thème de marche au tutti.

'Dramaphonia' for piano solo and 11 instruments forms the first part of a trilogy of solo-concertos, the remaining two being one for percussion and smaller symphony orchestra ('Monodrama') and the last ('Polydrama') for violoncello and full orchestra. All three pieces are in one movement each and may be performed together, thus presenting a vast concerto grosso of the duration of one hour and a half. Each concerto, however, stands by itself, offering its own story: having employed the word drama in all three pieces, I naturally want to imply that something is going on, a series of hidden events created by each listener's own inner theatre which enables him to stage his own, personal associations, and in the case of 'Dramaphonia', the compositorical tension alters between action and frozen panoramas. In the percussion concerto, the rhythmical progression is being constantly intensified, whereas the metric proportions of Dramaphonia tighten and loosen, like a magnifying glass being wielded in and out of focus. 'Dramaphonia' is commissioned and dedicated to LONTANO and Poul Rosenbaum.
