Every year a competition for wind orchestras and brass bands takes place in Wallberg, Switzerland. Apart from a hymn and a solo piece, all orchestras also have a compulsory piece to play. The commission to create a compulsory piece for the 2012 competition fell to Jan de Haan. The composition is entitled Musica Helvetica. It takes the form of a three-part concert work, in which the last two parts flow directly from one to the other. The first part, Musica Prima, is a brisk virtuoso opening with jazz flavours woven in. The following section, Musica Sacra, offers a contrast with an extraordinarily colourful instrumentation for the gorgeous main theme. Thefinal part, Musica Alpina, is inspired by the great variety of scenery in Switzerland. With its witty humour it makes a worthy conclusion to this beautiful tryptich.

In het Zwitserse Wallberg wordt ieder jaar een concours voor harmonieorkesten en brassbands georganiseerd. Naast een hymne en een solowerk dienen alle orkesten een verplicht werk uit te voeren. Voor het concours van 2012 werd eenopdracht verstrekt aan Jan de Haan. De compositie kreeg Musica Helvetica als titel mee. Het gaat om een driedelig concertwerk waarvan de laatste twee delen onafgebroken in elkaar overgaan. Het eerste deel, Musica Prima,is een virtuoze en flitsende opening met hier en daar jazzy invloeden. In contrast daarmee staat het expressieve volgende deel, Musica Sacra, waarin het gedragen hoofdthema prachtig wordt uitgewerkt - de instrumentatieis hier buitengewoon kleurrijk. Het afsluitende deel, Musica Alpina, is ge nspireerd op het afwisselende landschap van Zwitserland. Het is grillig van structuur en vormt een waardige afsluiting van dit fraaie drieluik.

Im schweizerischen Wallberg wird jedes Jahr ein Wettbewerb für Blasorchester und Brass Bands ausgerichtet. Neben einer Hymne und einem Solowerk müssen alle Orchester ein Pfllichtstück spielen. Vor dem Wettbewerb im Jahr 2012 wurde der Auftrag zu diesem Pflichtstück an Jan de Haan vergeben. Die Komposition erhielt den Titel Musica Helvetica. Es handelt sich dabei um ein dreiteiliges Konzertwerk, dessen letzten zwei Teile direkt ineinander übergehen. Der erste Teil, Musica Prima, ist eine virtuose, flotte Eröffnung mit eingestreuten jazzigen Einflüssen. Einen Kontrast hierzu bildet der folgende Teil, Musica Sacra, worin das Hauptthema wunderschönausgearbeitet wird - die Instrumentierung ist hier außergewöhnlich farbig. Der letzte Teil, Musica Alpina, ist inspiriert vom abwechslungsreichen Landschaftsbild der Schweiz. Mit seiner launigen Struktur bildet er einen würdigen Abschluss dieses schönen Triptychons.

This celebratory work, which Philip Sparke wrote for the 20th anniversary of the Nottingham Concert Band, starts with a hymn-like theme played as a fanfare in the brass. With a change of mood from ‘solemn’ to ‘merry’ and back to ‘majestic’, together with an unusual orchestration, in which may different instruments feature and in which at points the entire wind orchestra shimmers in tutti passages, A Nottingham Festival is a real pleasure for musicians and public alike.

A Nottingham Festival débute par un motif ascendant qui contraste avec la fougueuse entrée des cuivres. Puis l’ambiance se fait sereine pour introduire une mélodie jouée par les clarinettes et accompagnée d’un motif rythmique la caisse claire. Un crescendo mène un passage puissant repris par l’orchestre entier qui réintroduit la trame initiale. Le tableau final est rehaussé par la reprise majestueuse du thème d’origine, interprété cette fois par les cuivres, où s’entrelacent les attrayantes répliques des bois. Une coda énergique met fin cette somptueuse composition qui souligne la force créatrice du compositeur.

Questo brano festivo è stato composto da Philip Sparke per il 20° anniversario di fondazione della Nottingham Concert Band. Il pezzo apre con un motivo simile a un inno. Cambiamenti di umore, dal festoso al divertito per poi tornare al maestoso, come anche un’orchestrazione bilanciata che riesce a mettere in risalto molti strumenti come anche l’organico nei passaggi in tutti, fanno di A Nottingham Festival un vero piacere musicale per esecutori e pubblico.

The BAND TIME series consists of a number of books containing easy pieces suitable for youth band. BAND TIME Starter is intended for the first year of band playing and includes four-part pieces in many different styles. The difficulty of the pieces increases in parallel with the material covered in the first part of the Look, Listen & Learn method. The first three works, however, are three-part pieces in order to accommodate the limited range of notes available at this stage. The BAND TIME series is suitable for various combinations of instruments provided that the parts are divided in a sensible way (for concert band, fanfare band or brass band). The material for altosaxophone, trombone and baritone/euphonium/bass clarinet is divided into parts 1 and 2 in order to cover all voices using the most popular instruments.

De serie Band Time is ontwikkeld om kinderen vroeg kennis te laten maken met het samenspel in een blaasorkest. Band time Starter maakt dit al in het eerste jaar mogelijk. Deze uitgave bevat vierstemmige stukken in diversestijlen- de eerste drie stukken zijn drie stemmig, aangespast aan de vaardigheden van de beginnende leerling. De moeilijkheidsgraad en de muzikale inhoud zijn gebasseerd op Horen, Lezen & Spelen. In de partituur staatuitgelegd hoe u de serie optimaal benut en hoe de instrumentatie in uw specifieke bezetting het best kan worden toegepast. BAND TIME Starter eignet sich für das erste Jahr im Blasorchester und enthält vierstimmige Stücke in vielen verschiedenen Stilen. Der allmählich fortschreitende Schwierigkeitsgrad entspricht dem Stoff der Bläserschule Hören, lesen und spielen Band 1, kann aber auch gut unabhängig davon eingesetzt werden. Die ersten drei Stücke passen sich mit ihren lediglich drei Stimmen dem noch begrenzten Tonumfang an, über den die Schüler in diesem Stadium verfügen. Aus dem gleichen Grund weichen manchmaldieselben Stimmen für unterschiedliche Instrumente leicht voneinander ab. Geringfügige Abweichungen erklären sich außerdem aus manchen besonderen Bedingungen bei einem bestimmten Instrument, zum Beispiel schwierige Tonfolgen. Passend zu der Reihe ist eine CD erhältlich, mit deren Unterstützung die Schüler zu Hause mit richtiger Orchesterbegleitung spielen können. Ein schnellerer Erfolg ist damit gesichert!

Along with the movement In the King's Hall, The Homage March from Act III of Sigurd Jorsalfar remains one of the most popular Scandinavian pieces of classical music. This arrangement has, once again, has been skilfully crafted by Wil van der Beek for a younger Concert Band and will be a popular addition to any concert.

Sigurd Jorsalfar ist die Buhnenmusik zum gleichnamigen Drama des beruhmten norwegischen Dichters Bjornsterne Bjornson. Das Werk basiert auf einer altnordischen Sage von zwei Brudern, die beide um den Konigsthron kampfen und einer Frau, die den Streit schlichten soll. Wil van der Beek bearbeitete den feierlichen Huldigungsmarsch aus diesem Werk fur Blasorchester.

La Marche d'Hommage de l'acte III de la suite orchestrale Sigurd Jorsalfar d'Edvard Grieg, se trouve a l'oppose des marches au caractere sombre ou martial. L'introduction en forme de fanfare est superbement lyrique. Puis vient l'exposition d'un theme joue cantabile. L'instrumentation developpe quelque peu le theme initial avec des accents rythmiques a la basse. Le theme de la marche est ainsi amorce. Un trio central, lumineux et serein, precede le retour du theme de marche au tutti.
