Christmas Cantata (Sinfonia Sacra), the most famous piece of Daniel Pinkham, composed in 1957, is a church composition for chorus, double brass and organ. Written in Latin. Accessible to good high-school and college singers, the opening statement is sung by the whole SATB chorus, followed by the Allegro section, which is rhythmically quite complicated. The middle section is sung by sopranos and altos while the Rondo, which is part of the final part, is sung by the whole SATB, its verses being interpreted by the different groups. Daniel Pinkham (1923-2006) is an American composer, organist and harpsichordist. Most of his compositions were related to church music and his best known works are the Christmas, Advent and wedding cantatas.

Given that hardly any printed collections of new keyboard music were offered in Germany in the first decades of the 18th century, Christoph Graupner's eight Partien auf das Clavier , published in 1718, marked a new beginning. The suites are arranged according to an ascending sequence of notes and generally follow the scheme Allemande - Courante - Sarabande - Gigue, but this order is repeatedly broken, also by movements that are rather unusual for a suite. The focus is on the characteristics of the individual movements and the joy of playing with figures typical for the movement or instrument, as well as on challenging playing techniques, such as hand changes in runs (passaggi), wide-ranging chord breaks and the use of the thumb, which was not very common at the time. In this respect, Graupner's suites offer not so much a formal advancement, but rather an expansion of the demands of playing technique. Although several CD recordings of these suites already exist, this volume constitutes the first modern Urtext edition. Complementing her scholarly activities, the editor Genevieve Soly provides important impulses on performance practice in the preface, especially on the execution of the passaggi and the ornamentation, thus opening up the view on her activity as a harpsichordist.

Scarlet Letters was composed in 1984 on commission of the pianist and harpsichordist Franzpeter Goebels (1920-1988) on the occasion of the 300th birth day of Domenico Scarlatti. The original working title 'Lettere scarlattine' is a concealed homage to the Italian composer. The compositional material is limited to the tones D, E, C, Es (= S, spoken 'Es' = E flat in German notation) and A, derived from the musical letters of Domenico Scarlatti's name, and the tones B (= B flat in German nota tion) and H (= B natural), the initials of my name. With 7 tones and 7 parts, this music is a sort of story about my imaginary encounter with the composer Domenico Scarlatti who was then one of my favourite composers. Sometimes I also used compositional means which I discovered in the sonatas of Scarlatti, such as quick 6/8 figures, afterbeat octaves and repetitions of short motifs. I tried to translatethe clarity, brightness and cheerfulness, the astounding modulations and the pianistic brilliance of his music into my compositional language.Barbara HellerThe piece was recorded on CD by the American pianist Deborah Richards (WERGO 6610-02). First performance: 31. October 1987 International Festival of Women Composers, Unna; Rosario Marciano, piano.

Inspired by the two- and three-part inventions of Bach, Baksa's 36 Canonic Inventions were composed in the early 1980s but are now available complete in two volumes. Each two voice invention is followed by a three voice invention in the same key so that the result is somewhat like the Master of Master's Preludes and Fugues. Many of these pieces were premiered by Harpsichordist Elaine Comparone but they are equally suitable for performance on piano or pianoforte. --American composer Lee Hoiby once asked me where I learned to write counterpoint. I told him that I learned by writing my Canonic Inventions.-- (Robert Baksa).

Tribute to a Maestro is an homage to Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683 1764), one of the most important French Baroque composers. Rameau was a hugely significant composer, organist, harpsichordist and music teacher: he also published several authoritative books on music theory. Jan de Haan based this tribute on a theme from ‘Les Sauvages’ (The Savages), the fourth act of Rameau’s ballet-opera, Les Indes Galantes (The Amorous Indies). The work begins with two variations, whereupon the striking theme can be heard. After a short intermezzo, four more variations follow, of which the last one is composed in Baroque style.
