Armas Jarnefelt (1869-1958) was a Finnish composer and conductor. Jarnefelt studied in Berlin in 1890-91 with Albert Becker as his teacher. In addition to composing studies, Jarnefelt fully enjoyed the life that a bustling metropolis could offer to a young man - concerts, operas, cafe life etc. Romanze, composed for Geraldine Morgan, was premiered in Helsinki in February 1892. According to critics (notably Bis Wasenius) the work was un-Finnish, perhaps echoing the continental winds Jarnefelt had experienced in Berlin. That aside, Jarnefelt's future brother-in-law, Jean Sibelius, analyzed the Romanze in a letter to his fiancee, Aino, sister of Armas: I think Romanze is a fine technical accomplishment, even the structure works well, given the theme as it is. But Armas certainly can do better than this, he should not waste his efforts in small-scale [salon] music. - Armas will find his own way and will be hailed as the greatest musician of this country..

Urtext edition with articulation markings - Linen-bound performing editionWhen you think cello, you think of Bach's immortal cello suites. The suites take centre stage in the cello literature. They are timeless and beautiful and accompany cellists from their student years up through their professional career at the highest level. Appropriately and not surprisingly there are countless editions of the suites. But the composer's autograph has not come down to us. It is lost and this circumstance has always been a major challenge for editors. The four surviving handwritten sources and the original first edition of 1824 differ in many details, the articulation and phrasing being particularly ambiguous. At Barenreiter, having published the New Bach Edition and presently publishing the New Bach Edition-Revised, we feel particularly committed to the cello suites. We have approached the editorial problems from several angles and have published editions that meet the needs of students and professional performers alike. This new edition, based on volume 4 of the New Bach Edition - Revised (NBArev), now completes Barenreiter's collection of the cello suite editions. Andrew Talle has fundamentally reassessed the relations between the surviving sources and has drawn conclusions regarding their evaluation and consequently the genesis of the suites. His evaluations are augmented with thorough discussions of the instrument for which the suites were conceived and the interpretative practices in Bach's day.The musical text of the edition is based on these findings. It approaches the composer's original intentions as far as the sources will permit. Details regarding articulation were deemed as being viable and were added to the musical text if they appeared in the majority of the sources. This edition does not present a perfect reconstruction of the lost autograph; no editor could claim to do so. Instead, I have attempted to provide musicians and scholars with a reliable version of the surviving musical text of the six cello suites and to shed light on the options which the Bach sources offer. This flyer takes you through our various editions of Bach's Cello Suites.

Violin & Clarinet Duration: ' Composed: 1972 Published by: Soundspells Productions Includes set of 2 scores The Garden of My Father's House (1973) is a dramatic rhapsody for violin and clarinet duo. The composer wrote the following: I composed THE GARDEN OF MY FATHER'S HOUSE in 1972 in memory of my father, who was my first music teacher. Although he played many instruments and loved to sing, he could not read a note of music. When I was very young he would sing Gypsy songs, Yiddish folk-songs and Rumanian tunes to me and I would play them back on my clarinet, often with ornaments and variations. Sometimes he would accompany me on the piano; he had a few favorite chords which always seemed to pop up no matter what the tune. The piece is a musical ritual, based on a C-sharp drone, or pedal note, that is heard without interruption, across several ranges, throughout the piece. The violin's drone tremolos, often combined with perfect fifths and quarter-tone tunings, imply the key of Csharp minor. The violin part is always rubato — lyrical, expressive and frequently very passionate. But, most importantly, the violin is always tonal. The clarinet, on the other hand, is atonal, its pitches drawn from the twelve-tone row that I used to write my Cycles of Infinities. The style of the clarinet is contemporary, using wide-range intervals, biting accents and unusual instrumental effects, including fluttertonguing and quarter-tone trills. In combining the 'contrasting' roles of the two instruments, I sought to create a musical ritual-game that would draw energy and bits of information from the polarized instruments. The language of the piece calls the listener's attention to the cogent features of both instrumental personalities in a manner that is somewhat similar to the way in which Yiddish combines German and Hebrew. The drone becomes more and more magnetic and begins to join the parts together until they become one in the final C-sharp unison.

Duration: full evening Text by the composer using a text by Walter Jens Place and time: Chamber of the King Philip V. of Spain, Middle of the 18th Century Characters: Farinelli (Countertenor/alto) - King Philip V. of Spain (baritone) - Nicola Porpora (baritone) - The Kings Personal Physician, also Barber (tenor) - The Kings Confessor, also Impresario and Priest (bass) - Maria (Bellino), later Anna Maria Strada (soprano) - Georg Friedrich Handel (baritone) - Jenny, Jim, John, English Opera Troupe (soprano, tenor, baritone) - The young Carlo Broschi (boy treble) The dramaturgical constellation of the subject forced me to use multifaceted and stylistic means. I have used melodic segments from the Farinelli arias that are still extant today, as well as other Baroque vocal and formal elements, models inspired by the Singspiel and the musical, and even a rap piece over a techno rhythm. The musical center of the opera consists of song and the human voice. Farinelli is a bel canto opera. (Siegfried Matthus) Carlo Broschi, known as Farinelli, was the brightest star among the castrato tenors of the 18th century. Handels enemies brought him to London so that he could outshine Handels singers. Here, Matthus depicts Farinelli at the Spanish court, ruled by the pathologically melancholy King Philip V. In a review of his life, we relive important stages in the career of the singer, who lived outside of the norm and found his home in the fascinating twilight world between art and artificiality.World premiere: Netzeband, July 12, 1997.

TEMPUS FUGIT was commissioned to celebrate the centenary of Finnish independence on 6 December 2017 and it received its first performance in Helsinki on that day, given by the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra. The composer says that “if you translate TEMPUS FUGIT as 'Time Flies', you could say that Finland has travelled a long way already -but 100 years is a short time-span, and living as a human in this part of the world started long ago and, we hope, will continue formillennia to come. This relates to my fascination with Bernd Alois Zimmermann's concept of spherical time - that the past, the present and the future are continuously linked and within reach. You can also examine the inter-connection of musical time in the earlier works of Stockhausen such as Kontakte and Gruppen which had a big impact on me as a young composer. A translation of TEMPUS FUGIT that I prefer is 'Time in Flight', offering the idea that time escapes from us but bequeaths a tangible residue, rather like aplane travelling towards the distance but leaving a visible vapour trail.” This 30-minute score is a major addition to the orchestral repertory.

“Amazing Grace,†“It Is Well with My Soul,†“Just As I Am,â€â€¦ all songs and lyrics we have written on our hearts, often from an impressionable age. But time passes, life “happens,†and it’s not always easy to keep singing those words of faith. In Sing It Now, Award-winning writers Michael Farren, Tony Wood and Joseph Habedank, along with arranger/orchestrator Cliff Duren, remind us of God’s unchanging love and faithfulness. If you could sing it then, you can sing it now!
